iDoo hydroponics having a pretty good black friday sale, around 30% off these budget counter top hydroponic systems

Great pressie for someone who likes gardening, for either harvesting or for rapidly growing seedlings to then plant outside, or for anyone who wants to grow their own herbs / salad but doesn't have a yard

Aerogarden is the name brand in this industry but they don't seem to sell them here in australia, ridiculously expensive through resellers

These idoo systems are much better value for us and they seem to perform just as well according to youtube reviews. Water ingress failure of electronics dominate the 1 and 2 star reviews however they are still rated highly overall (high 4s) so there appears to be a low failure rate, be sure to check the seal prior to first use, if really paranoid you can reinforce with a $5 tube of silicone from bunnings.

Yes. Bought the 7 pod version and it died after one run/season of seedlings. Then bought the 12 pod and it has not missed a beat for 12 months. So suggest that one. Works terrifically to get seedlings up and going. Then replant into smaller pots as required - depending on what you're growing. Transplanting to soil has been successful. The IDOO inserts are much better quality than the cheaper versions on Amazon - so you'll soon need more of those (and they can be expensive). You can get more nutrients from Bunnings cheaper than buying the A & B solutions from IDOO though.

      • Thanks. Can you plant your own seeds.

        • Yeh you need your own seeds, these are not ready to go pods like some of the other systems.

The main thing that annoys me about it is the timer on it drifts so light set to come on for 14 hours on for example each time starts around 20 mins earlier than the last.

      • don't you reuse the inserts?

could also substitute with rockwool or if you have some netting handy some coco

foam might also be an option

        • I've managed to reuse inserts but they do get kind of destroyed in the process of removing the old roots.

          • @bamzero: i see, there are enzymes you can get to break down root matter, you'd just soak it - from memory they are pretty expensive though

best case are probably rockwool slabs cut to fit the pods, better growing medium than stock

    • plenty of reviews on youtube

  • Had 2 and always just leaks, the 7 pod model that is. They were easy to get the replacement as such but yeah aint good

    • How does it leak unless it's cracked? I had a puddle of water under it once, after pulling everything apart the only way it would leak is if it was overfilled or moved and the water overflowed into the middle bit where the pole connects which is what happened in my case. Once I cleared out that bit has been fine.

      • Mine never cracked and legit never figured out how they both leaked. Same issue, same area, must be some gap but I really don't know. I even taped it up real well when I got the new one and same issue eventually occured.

  • 12 pod worked ok for me. Just got them to a big enough size to put into soil

  • I have two 10 pod models, they work very well for greens and leafy herbs. Tomatoes do grow, and the ones we've had from it are tasty, but even the bushy determinate ones get pretty leggy once they start flowering and fruiting, so I think that's pushing the envelope. Very simple to use, though, and once the included nutrients run out there are cheap options at Bunnings.

  • Is this mainly just for germination of seedlings, the light doesn't look that powerful?

    • best for herbs, lettuce and seedlings
