Best show. ever. Nothing has ever beaten it.

The bluray for this is so expensive on amazon.

      • +12

Having seen both, I would have to say the Wire tops it.

        • -7

It was a snooze fest for me. Even "Oz" was better.

          • +3

@Mondorock: I find that surprising - took me several episodes to get into the Sopranos. Not so compelling at the start.

The Sopranos is great, fantastic humour and dialogue, but in terms of which show delivers meaningful messages/critique about society on so many levels, the Wire is better imo. And has equally fantastic dialogue, and I would argue better character development overall.

Each to their own - both great shows.

            • @Deals For Days: Monodock watch the whole thing then talk. Season 3 4 5 is where it at

            • +6

@Deals For Days: Sopranos is more accesible cause it took well known tropes and stereotypes and refined it to perfection. The Wire's style of storytelling and character development is so unique it takes a while for it to sink in. However, once your brain connects the dots it's obvious the Wire is the best show ever.

              • -1

@star-ggg: I think most casual viewers would struggle to understand a fair chunk of the dialogue, especially that of the dealers/Barksdale clan, and the police nomenclature. I appreciate that the writers deliberately left it raw & authentic & didn't tone it down.

              • +1

@star-ggg: This. The complexity of The Wire isn't for everyone. The Sopranos is more of a crowd pleaser. Its very good but not even close to The Wire.

                • @Brianqpr: There's still a fair amount of nuance in the language of The Sopranos but it's woven in enough that if you get it, it's a delightful little easter egg, but for the most it's very approachable & understandable.

            • @Deals For Days: Exactly. Why does it need to be a contest. Two different shows with two different plots. Eye of the beholder blah blah blah

          • +2

            @Mondorock: I really enjoyed Oz.

            Groundbreaking TV.

      • +4

Not an apples/apples comparison, totally different subject matter & stories. One centred around an individual, the other a city. Both fantastic in their own right, both not without their own detractions. I love them both.

        • +1

But then again, who are you to judge?

      • Sopranos was absolutely not better, not even close. In fact it was somewhat repetitive the longer it went on and totally lacked the depth and complexity of The Wire.

        • -1

Viewer figures tell us quite a bit - 10 million at Sopranos peak, 3-4 million peak for The Wire.

          • @Mondorock: It has broader appeal yes, because its easier to follow, doesn't mean its better. It absolutely is not.

I recently watched all seasons of Sopranos to see for myself. Great show, but not even close to The Wire.

    • +1

The blu-ray is annoying, it doesn't remember your position like every other box set I own, so everytime you go to watch an episode it plays a bunch of adverts and piracy warnings. Ended up putting a copy on my plex server to watch instead…

  • +4

Just finished watching it again, $35 is a small price for this awesome show.

    • Yeah $35 for the entire series now is great considering I paid $35+ per season when they were released in what seems like a life time ago. It's a slow series, but when (and if it clicks) it's pretty good. Not my favourite of all time, but still good.

  • +4

Awesome, rewatchable and bargain for the 24 disc version. I prefer this 4:3 aspect ratio (as it was originally broadcast, though everyone will have their own preferences).

Band of Brothers and The Pacific Blu-ray also has a Black Friday special showing for $23.95 (free delivery for Prime): https://www.amazon.com.au/Band-Brothers-Pacific-Van-Pack/dp/…

    • +1

      Thanks grabbed that

    • +4

Can't stand 4:3, I wish I could, because there are so many classics only available in 4:3

    • +2

Thanks. Band of brothers is amazing

  • +2

I really need to get around to finishing this series. Watched Season 1 then life got in the way.

    • +4

It only gets better. Particularly season 4, the finale to that was jaw droppingly good.

      • +1

I started watching a few weeks ago. Currently on season 4, can't wait for the end!

      • +1

I'll have to re-watch, S01 was my favourite, but loved every episode of the entire series. Easily one of the best tv shows ever made.

        • I once got stuck in the backstreets of Baltimore and had to get a service station attendant to call me a cab (long story). I can tell you the realism of the show isn't far off the mark at all.

          • +1

@dinglejerry: I can solidly recommend Homicide: Life On The Streets, also set in Charm City. A little bit 90s kitsch but overall very solid. Importantly it's also written by David Simon, and based on a book he wrote whilst a reporter for The Baltimore Sun after spending a year with the Homicide unit of BPD (read the book, it's incredible).

            • @The Judge: Yes I heard about it. Haven't had the time yet to sit down and watch it.

            • @The Judge: It had a difficult time with ratings, there is a painful difference between the earlier seasons to the latter because they tried to make it more accessible. Andre Braugher is always amazing to watch.

              • @saveye: Very good point, it definitely evolved over time, and like a lot of shows the first few seasons were the best. Pembleton was an outstanding character. What did you think of the Law & Order crossovers?

      • "Yeah you're right, I'm not that modest."

I just started the show not long ago and I literally just watched this episode last night XD

I have to admit though S1 was great, S2 took a while to get into but I think I'm over the hump now and is getting great again.

  • Is this the best image quality that you'll find? Better than binge?

    • +1

oh theres a bluray version, so im guessing no. but its $139.
edit: didn't realise dvd was limited to 480p. ill pass

    • +1

It would definitely not be better than binge. I did a full re-watch about 5 months ago on binge, was good.

    • +7

This is one of those classic "DVD vs Blu-Ray" questions that's not about resolution per se. The show was made and screened at 4:3. They were given the option of filming a forwards compatible version by HBO in 16:9 to make it forwards compatible, by S2 or S3, but chose not to.

The Blu-Ray release was re-cut to 16:9, and David Simon has written a really thoughtful essay about his views on it.

Long story short, he sees them as different - 4:3 is his preferred version, but 16:9 is acceptable to him as a 'different vision' or some such with compromises - some better, some not so good. He was involved with some of it, so it's not like it happened completely against his will.

It's just a shame studios forced all these early 2000s shows into a different resolution by expanding shots and zooming in for things that weren't designed for it. Same with Buffy. I just there were high def 4:3 versions. At the end of the day I went with the DVD over Blu-Ray for the reasons in the article, though almost everything else I have these days is high def.

this is the same with Seinfeld too,
as the Netflix release is not as "engaging"
        as its 4:3 TV release

        • Still it looks great. They obviously had access to the very best kept masters to produce that “4K” 16:9 Netflix Seinfeld

        • +1

Same with the Simpsons. They official went widescreen partway through the show's 20th season. Season 20 Episode 10, "Take My Life, Please". Air date February 15, 2009 was the first official widescreen episode.

Up until then all episodes were 4:3. When channel 7 acquired the rights to the Simpsons all the 4:3 episodes had been converted to 16:9. So they got and now only play these original 4:3 episodes in 16:9. The original 4:3 aspect episodes are now only available on the DVD/Blu-ray releases.

          • @g12345567: The TV manufacturers could have still kept making 4:3 ratio LCD/LED TVs,
for everyone to keep enjoying all these shows !

It's like when we all look at black & white and think "that's in the old days",
that kids with neural-linked 360-spherical video would look at 4:3 ratio and think the same.

            • +1

              @whyisave:

The TV manufacturers could have still kept making 4:3 ratio LCD/LED TVs, for everyone to keep enjoying all these shows !

Or just broadcast the original 4:3 and have black bars on either side. I'd much prefer Netflix do that with Seinfeld instead of show an (IMO) inferior 16:9 version.

      • +2

Funnily enough in the comments, David Simon goes on to say even the upgrade to HD (without reframing to 16:9) is not how they intended for the show to be seen, so 4:3 SD is their original filmmakers intended version. https://davidsimon.com/the-wire-hd-with-videos/comment-page-…

I didn't remember that part! Honestly so cool that you can just, like… find the creator of what is regarded as one of the best shows of all time just… talking it out, going through his process, engaging and arguing with fans and doing it all right there, in public, on his blog. Legendary stuff!

          • @Phanatic: (For the record I don't agree with David Simon - DVD compression played on a large format TV is probably more degraded from the original experience than a HD transfer to 4:3 on the same big TV. But then any sentence that begins with "I don't agree with David Simon" can probably be disregarded at the outset! :p)

We own this city is from the same guys who did the wire. Also definitely worth a watch.

  • I was lucky enough to see "Bird" in the flesh a couple of weeks ago. Fredro Starr aka Fred Scruggs Jnr is part of Onyx, a rap group from the 90s. Lovely bloke and a terrific performer.

I don't think I've ever laughed so hard as when Omar walked into court wearing a necktie and trackies.

I'm watching the 1st season of The Wire and I just got done watching the episode where DeAngelo teaches the younger kids chess. I was blown away! I had to watch it a couple times to really pick up on it, but did you guys realize that when he was teaching them about the chess pieces, he was really referring to THEM being the pawns! What an amazing metaphor!

It was so deep and meaningful, I am amazed by the deep symbolism of this.

Do the later seasons continue on with masterful symbolism like this? This was truly the pinnacle of storytelling that I have ever seen on a television show, and I think I can confidently say The Wire is the best show ever made without even having seen the entire series.

Also the acting is amazing. Idris Elba and Dominic West do a great job with their Baltimore accents.

    • Yes. The show is full of this sort of thing.

    • I was hoping someone would post this copypasta

  • I remember my house mate raving about this many years ago. Maybe I should get around to watching it

  • Only 4 left apparently

    • Was thinking then saw this comment. Always wanted to watch it. Amazon said 2 left but could not add to cart so it's all gone. Ozbargained!

  • Where's Wallace?

You can just watch it for free on HBO Max

    • HBO Max is neither free nor available in Aus.

    Out of stock… need a re-up

  • Is it legit that good ?

I needed something to binge on, If this is so good then I might give a try

    • +3

Read the comments above, read any comments anywhere about it. People argue over if it is one of the best series of all time or it is the best series of all time.
      RIP Omar

    • -1

Most overrated show IMO. Lots of people seem to like it but i don't see the hype, like anything give it a go and it might be for you.

    • +1

The Wire is a slow burn, and in many ways it's not like a normal TV series. Some stories get resolved within an episode, but the overwhelming majority don't. I've watched the whole thing probably about ten or eleven times by now, and I never get sick of it. All it takes is for me to think of a classic scene (like Snoop buying a nail gun at the hardware store) and I get that itch to watch the whole thing again.

  • -4

Decent show, definitely doesn’t deserve the “best show ever” praise it receives.

    • name a better show

      • -2

You ask that like it's hard:
True Detective S1, Breaking Bad, The Americans, Peaky Blinders, Band of Brothers, Dark, Ozark, Vikings

        • You ask that like it's hard:

Well, he did say "name a better show".
