What does that mean? Can I just format it to get rid of any default crap and use it as a normal external HDD for files or for my Xbox?

AES-256 is a file encryption standard used (in this case) when you decide to password protect the drive to lock important files.
So I can use it just normally for files or my Xbox for games if I don't password protect it?

I believe this has built in hardware encryption while the WD Elements doesn't.
I currently use a 2TB WD Portable hard drive for my Xbox saved data - would I be able to transfer all this data across to this 4TB and use it on my Xbox Series X?
yeah you could assuming you know how to do this, quite simple, if your use a specialised tool like clonezilla, or other specialized apps you'll have to get one. My advise is do a google! This is ozBargain not ozXboxTechSupport.
