Possibly the worst deal of all this week's laptop deals?

Low ram, heavy weight, short battery life aren't doing this any favours

    • Really. I am far from an expert but this one peaked my interest.

Keen for your suggestion for something similar (ie low spec, similar size) but still has touch screen (preferably with pen support) with a better battery and lighter. And preferably tougher for a byod for a year 7 kid.

      Thanks.

      • Personally I grabbed the surface laptop. It's about the same price after shop back cashback.

I needed one for byod for year 7 student too.

Reasons why the surface laptop wins:
19hr battery life. Kids aren't allowed to plug in at school. In 2 years time even if the battery degrades it'll hopefully last at least half of those 19hrs.

Weight. Having to lug a heavy laptop around isn't fun for an adult let alone a child. Surface is about 15% lighter than the HP.

RAM. 8gb will probably be ok for today, but unless you plan to buy your kids a new laptop every year, it probably won't be enough in 2-3 years time as the OS and software demands increase

Screen. FHD is ok, but if you can get better with the surface laptop, why wouldn't you?

        • Agree on the battery life and RAM. It's a good laptop overall.
A minor point to note who require a little bit more future proofing. 8GB = lots more swapping in and out of memory to disk for resource intensive applications = more power drain.

@duckworth: I admire everyones confidence in the need for "future proofing". I'll be happy if it makes 2 years before it breaks or is stolen etc.

            • @chewbot: Aye chewbot. Expect the laptop to last 2-3 years max.

Your hope is that your kids will come back with a genuine reason for you to upgrade.
My hope is that my kids came back and said, "dad, I need more memory for my photo editing do some 3D designs for the 3D printer ", or "dad, I need to more memory on the laptop so I some more coding for this cool app I am going to write"..

My next thoughts from there would be, "I'll buy you whatever you want as long as you can make something so I can retire" :D

              • @duckworth: I hear you. I bought my very musically talented daughter some decent music software subscription almost a year ago hoping to retire by now. Hasn't happened yet!

        • Thanks.

That's been on my list as well.

Spend a $100 more and get a better laptop with more RAM and touch screen from Lenovo.

        https://www.harveynorman.com.au/lenovo-ideapad-flex-14-inch-…

        In relation to this deal

        1. Pavilion is an entry level chassis
        2. The 11th gen Intel CPU is slower than AMD Ryzen 5.

        https://www.cpubenchmark.net/compare/4582vs4141/Intel-i5-115…

i5 scores only 10000 vs over 13000 from the R5

        1. This only has 8GB RAM vs 16GB RAM of the Flex
        2. Intel Iris graphics are worse overall than AMD Radeon Vega. AMD also update their drivers more frequently to support newer software.
        3. Battery on the HP is only 43Wh, so I doubt it would reach the quoted 12hrs other than being on and doing nothing. The Lenvo Flex as a 52Wh battery and reviews indicate it can get about 10hrs of productivity.
        • I've been looking at the lenovo ideapad as well. It's the plugging into power that's the problem - you want some decent battery life.
Note that Amazon and JB have very similar deals.

        • All sounds good. A little heavier. Any idea how tough it is?

          • @chewbot: It's well known that the Thinkpads are more durable than the Ideapad and Yoga, even if you are only looking at the Thinkpad E series.
The online Lenovo guy I chatted with today said the same thing.

      • FYI, it piqued your interest. Unless you interest has been dropping ever since :)

If you want tougher and lighter on a budget, you probably should look at a "refurb" (ie used) 12-13" business model. But the 2-in-1s don't come up so often, so you may have to settle for standard laptop with touchscreen.

Surface laptop is nice, but sealed, expensive to repair.

        • My interest is a sneaky little thing.

          🙃

        • To be fair, at the time I typed that was probably just after my interest "peaked".

Having said that, I do find my interest in most things tends to wane over time!

But yes, I definitely meant piqued.

Actually, regarding the tougher aspect, I have mostly been looking at the dell vostro and to a lesser extent latitudes refurbs. Have all but given up on the touchscreen versions though.

When my daughter got her byod a few years ago I got her a 13inch Dell Vostro (non-touchscreen) for about $950 and we have been well impressed with it overall, but particularly the tough factor. She is clumsy. There just hasn't been any great discounts on the current equivalents though.

My son is both clumsy and rough, but I think would really benefit from the touchscreen. And a really heavy duty case, and possibly some kind of bubble wrap situation!

      • Thanks to all who helped me along the way.

I just bought a surface laptop 4 from the ebay deal.

Now I can stop thinking about laptop bargains ……….. and give myself 12 hours break before dealing with buying him a phone!

  • Is the ram upgradable? Looking like a solid deal!

    • +1

Well this is a soldered deal
