  • I really wanted to like this, tried it a couple of years ago, loved bringing up the actors bio and movies etc etc on the TV.

However, having to ask users to pay for the client is an absolute deal breaker.

Have been a lifetime Plex Member for a while, no extra costs.

Emby is free, only premiere requires a on off payment. Not sure why you say having to ask users to pay for the clinet is a deal breaker when you PAID for plex?

      • Because Plex is good?

      • I'm letting my parents stream my Server, along with my sisters interstate.

I don't wanna charge them for the privilege.

I'm glad helping them out, and their kids too.

That's why I like the flexibility.

No extra costs… except they send a list of everything you watch to them, constantly try you serve you up their own content, requires online access for login, has a weird server administration architecture, etc. Much simpler to just go with Emby or jellyfin.

    • Jellyfin does this and is 100% free to use.

Or just use Jellyfin which forked of Emby anyway.

Or if you’re willing to pay, use Plex.

Personally I find Jellyfin so much better.
Also after Jellyfin forked the Opensource emby code and emby got all upset, closed the source code and blocked the Jellyfin server in their apps I decided to never give them my money.
The point of Opensource is so others can use it as they want, freely.

      • You can't run Jellyfin server on a Shield :-(
Emby seems to be offering the same "lifetime" deal as Plex did, but $30 cheaper.

Before Emby was due to go closed source to make money, a team forked it and called it Jellyfin, they wanted a free media sever for all :)

What is wrong with making money from a full time project, everyone does it, anyway, from Emby, with source code….

Emby source is here as it always has been:

          https://github.com/MediaBrowser/Emby

However the installed version built by Emby is closed source because it contains additional modules that we're not able to open source for various reasons. Some features have come at a great cost to build, whether that be our own development hours, or developers that we have added to our team. Other features are actively costing us money, and other features we've signed NDA's for in order to utilize private api's. Hopefully you will understand and appreciate the hard work that we've put into this. Thanks

Here is a really cool link on all the current media servers and all there features, my personal opinion is Emby is Plex without the crap, but each to their own.
