Anyone with experience of these? Reviews suggest very sluggish performance

I got a couple for around $50 each with previous deals and am very happy with them for my use case.

I use them as photo frames, clocks and Chromecast or Bluetooth speakers (some apps such as Audible and Libby don't Chromecast) and occasionally to watch videos in the bedroom and office.

I can't answer about their performance with voice commands or smart home integration, though.

Very sluggish. We were looking to replace our Echos with Google stuff. Alexa responds virtually instantly, whereas these 2nd gen units you can see it interpret your speech, but then takes a long time to process and action.

It's too long with a crying baby and wanting to put music on, annoying when you want to turn a light on and it takes upwards of 5-10 seconds to process when Alexa/Echo is virtually instant.

Google's speech recognition is superior to Alexa, but the performance is abysmal to us and we'll be ditching plans to go with Google gear.

I think your issue here is with Google in general. It sounds like their cloud server isn't up to scratch for you.

The edge processing of the actual device I think is decent enough. But my use case is more for wanting a display that shows the time. Only very occasionally use the voice for smart home controls. Also the sleep sense/track is great (free feature for 2022 only).

      • Bought one for $36 to give to the in-laws to try.
By your accounts, we'll stick to being a Dot / Show family here. 👍

I agree with fuzor. I was with tangerine/Aussie bb and google was near instant. Then switched to occom and it would take 5-10 seconds like you mentioned, but after the first request any subsequent requests within a few mins were fast. Occom never solved it so I ported back to aussie

        • Interesting idea on RSP being the problem. We're with Exetel currently, which are positioned as Superloop's premium brand.

I shall consider porting out to ABB to test.

          Appreciate the suggestion.

@aleayr: Just be aware if you have a 30 day notice period. I didn’t know about mine and am paying double for a month as a result

Looking at mine now over a cup of tea. Suits our household perfectly. Mainly used to control lights, turn on tv etc, play music on Spotify and tell the time. Plenty of arguments have been settled in the living room with this also.

      Never noticed any lag.

      • muzeeb is that you?

        • Plenty of arguments have been settled in the living room with this also.

          Hey Google, fix my marriage

  • Seems like Google are trying to give these away… because I purchased one the other day through eBay Black Friday drops for $36.
Edit: For the in-laws to use.

    • That was discounted with ebay funds.

  • Thanks Op ! Ordered one for my folks - hope they like it.

  • Does CB only apply to new users?

  • Thanks OP. I had one and love it. Just got one for the X'mas gift for someone.
