Original Coupon Deal

My WD Purple drive failed and I won't be going with WD Purple again.

For less than $100 delivered this seems a pretty fair deal.

Best price on Amazon.com.au is currently $109

Note listing is unclear but you are likely to get a cheaper SMR ST4000VX013 rather than a more expensive CMR ST4000VX007

Both models are mentioned in the listing. Credit to @opt below for his informative comments re SMR vs CMR drives.

This is part of Black Friday / Cyber Monday deals for 2022

  • My WD Purple drive failed and I won't be going with WD Purple again.
so what colour is this ? j/k

i kind of need one but this price isnt that super duper good..,
i think for now i better find and delete some junk from my 30TB NAS and hold a bit longer.

I'm guessing these are the cheaper ST4000VX013 SMR drives ??
The listing has both part numbers and specs, not clear which one they are selling.

    • Damn! How will these be any better than WD Purple, OP?

EDIT: Just double checked the product page on eBay, @opt

      MPN: ST8000VX004, ST6000VX001, ST4000VX007, ST3000VX009, ST2000VX008, ST1000VX005, ST4000VX013, ST2000VX015

      • I can't guarantee they will be any better than Purple's - but I have had 2 Purple's fail just outside their warranty periods, so I am not having much luck with them.

I have a Seagate bought at the same time the first Purple was bought and it is still going strong.

    • @opt

Most likely the SMR drives but it isnt clear from the listing. I am not worried either way, as long as they come with the full 3 year warranty. The SMR drives actually use slightly less power but have slightly lower data throughput.

      • Yeah, BTW found another listing from Shopping Express for the CMR, Posted here, credited this post since yours lead me to find it :) . I’m looking for a cheap NAS drive, and these Surveillance drives (the CMR variant) are generally considered next best for NAS applications for anyone who doesn’t want to spend big bucks for the IronWolf range. But SMR drives are notoriously bad for NAS applications https://www.servethehome.com/wd-red-smr-vs-cmr-tested-avoid-…

        • Yeah, BTW found another listing from Shopping Express for the CMR

They are the same company, as @RichardL pointed out here.

          • @DoctorCalculon:

They are the same company, as @RichardL pointed out

True, but I would assume you have a better chance of returning the drive (and not pay for return shipping) if you end up with an SMR drive with the other listing.

        • Thanks for this info @opt

I have learnt something today about these drives. I suspect they will send the ST4000VX013 and I'll keep it and use it. But next time I probably will look out for a CMR version (next time I may well go >4TB, in which case most of them are CMR).

  • 5 purchases since I put up this listing!

  • What's a good drive/price for a 4TB NAS HDD (storing media to play from Plex)? Looking to get 2 x 4TB but I don't see many of those deals (just good prices on larger capacity drives).

  • From above comments it looks like its a basic model of Seagate surveillance HDD. Is this HDD good for Reolink 4k 8 MP 6 camera POE system? I heard Western Digital - WD42PURZ purple is another good option but its much expensive than this seagate hdd. Can anyone pls suggest?

    • I guess it depends on your budget and how mission critical it is. Replaying footage might take longer to start with this ST4000VX013 compared to the WD Purple or a ST4000VX007 - but it costs a lot less.

I have 8 x 4K HIKVision cameras and this ST4000VX013 will do fine for my home needs. If it takes 15 seconds longer to start playback on one of the few times a year I need to check the video, it's not the end of the world.

The ST4000VX013 is designed to be a surveillance hard disk so its made to run 24x7 in NVRs - it is just the KIA version, rather than Volkswagen.

      • Thanks mate for the insight.

  • Interesting read thanks OP 😊
