I bought this thinking an upgrade from my normal hose. Got so disappointed that the water stream is weak and slow. I haven't touched it since.

    • +8

You obviously didn't buy the Hi-Flow model.

      • +9

Is there such thing as a Slo-Flow model?

      • +14

I think you can unlock higher flow with a subscription

        • +2

God dammit man dont joke about it. If they can find a way to pull that shit, you just know they will…

    • +4

slow water? Isn't that determined by the water pressure from your tap?

      • +3

Nope. My standard hose has better flow.

        • +3

          Common issue with hose reels

      • +3

hose diameter and length causes pressure and flow loss

    • +8

I would have thought as long as it's 12mm hose it wouldn't matter which brand it is (unless it's the spray thing at the end is constricted (but I haven't found them to be). Try completely unwinding it, fill it with water, then wind it up still full. I'm thinking it's 'strangled' in the winding maybe so that might prevent that?

      • Thanks. I'll muck around at some point to see what's wrong with it.

        • Look for differences. Perhaps the diameter inside the connector is smaller than the 'regular' click fittings? Perhaps your alternative hose expanded with pressure and is now larger than 12mm (mine must have gone up to about 15mm between joins before I gave up on it). Perhaps you are comparing a 20m hose to a 30m hose?

FWIW my most recent hose is a Hoselock. Only had a few squirts but seems OK (as most do when new). Why not Hoselink? Regular click fittings are more versatile. You are not stuck with one brand. Drip system, pressure washer, lawn sprinkler, washing brush, etc all work with no change needed.

          • +2

@RogerLoger: but you can get the 'click' adaptor for Hoselink so can use any of that stuff.

I have lots of the Hoselink stuff, but I'm not 100% sold on it. When the joints start to wear, they can pop off and you lose the O-rings in the grass. I don't know that having to rotate the joint to find the insertion point is any easier than the 'click' type of joint.

            • @wfdTamar: There is a raised part on the fittings that indicate the locking "start" position.
              They both must align.
I paint these with a white paint pen so they are easier to see when connecting.

Of course they also sell spare o-rings to suit.

            • @wfdTamar: At least they supply extra O-rings in the box. I have the exact same hose reel. Get the cover too, looks snazzy and fits well.

            • @wfdTamar: I did try a hoselink years ago. Straight away I had to fix Tim Kierath's spam!

IMO as a permanent joint Hoselink connectors are good but when it comes to connecting to different fittings, as you imply, the O-rings are the Achilles heal.

I also had trouble with two 'non-leaking' sprays that leaked badly.

      • stiffness and expansion of the hose wold pay a part too?

      • +2

You can't retract the hose while it's full of water - it must be emptied before it will fit back in the reel.

        • One benefit of having awful water pressure at our house is we can actually retract easily when it's full of water. I think I'd prefer the pressure though…

      • Having worked for a fire company in my youth, we would do this with fire hose reels.
Roll up full of water, then release pressure.

Though I tend to agree that a full hose doesn't retract easily on the Hoselink reels, especially the last metre or so.

There is a lever at the tap which controls the flow plus one also on the trigger. Try that and hope this fixes the issue.

    • Yeh, gotta admit I am disappointed by the flow as well. Replaced a standard gardena hose with this reel and the flow is piss poor.

People say 'should of bought the 19mm high flow', well my old 12/13mm had plenty of flow and this is just crap. The old hose could spray 10+m on jet and fill a bucket in no time, not this one. I believe there connectors are to blame, appear to drop to about 10mm through them.

FWIW, and it's only been a few weeks, but my aldi reel from the recent special buy is holding up well in Perth. Only time will tell.

  • +2

    Same price from hoselink atm

  • +3

We've had this going on seven years, still in great condition.

  • These are frequently 10% off

  • do they go any lower?

    • You’d have to dig a hole.

  • +6

An alternative would be the Holman 20m retractable hose & reel available from Bunnings for nearly half the price. The charcoal colour is in stock in some stores. Any warranty claims may be less of a hassle also.

    • +1

$188 seems very expensive for a hose reel imo.
You could just buy a $20 one…. sure they are crap but you could get a new one every 6 months :-/

      • I agree! I know Hoselink is highly recommended one but do you know any other equivalent but cheaper hosereel ?

        • +4

I bought several hoselink retractable reels, and thought that they were fantastic. Couple of years later I now have 3 dead hose reels that won't retract and they're not serviceable so all I can do is pull out the hose chop it off, and loop them over the hose cock like regular hoses.

          • +1

@frugalferret: Ask Hoselink if they can fix it. I had one past warranty and they fixed it. From memory I had to pay to get it there (they sent a prepaid courier ticket so it was $30 from Tassie), but they sent it back free.

      • +7

Such a stupid way of thinking. Buy cheap crap and throw away to a landfill.

      • I would have thought the same.

But when you hear people (real people, not fake feedbacks) say they have them for up to 11 years and still kicking on, I guess it might be worth this outlay.

Might be one of those ‘buy once, cry once’ moments

Picked up 2 charcoal Holman 20m retractables in the last couple of weeks. Look great, work as expected. Neighbour has the same just many years older and holding up fine. For $99 ea highly recommended, however I did get the last of the charcoal - not sure if it's likely to become a regular line or was a one off.

The Holman range (I own/owned 2) are average at best. If your hose reel cops tons of sun they start to fall apart after 3 years (brittle, faded plastic) The hose retracting mechanism tend to crap themselves around the same time, hose kinks and the spray gun leaks and then gets brittle. Yes they are $99 for the hose reel and if you are fine with 3 years of life then go for it. I suppose you could get a cover for the hose reel to help mitigate against the elements but that doesn't help the crappy retracting mechanism.

  • Holman in bunnings is only $90 or $99 but you can get a lot cheaper in Aldi, for about $30 (it was a clearance)

    • They’re comparable only by length.

🎶These hose aint loyal. 🎶 Chris Brown

  • Yes. hoselink is highly recommended.

The only thing to remember is that if you want to connect things like weed and feed bottles to it, you’ll need an adapter, as they have a different kind of connect end than many other hoses.
    They’re about $8.50.

I have bought a couple of accessories from hose link to use with the regular hose I had and I must agree with others that it is very high-quality stuff.
Cheap Bunnings products can't even come close.

    • Agree. The only attachment I thought was meh was the metal jet spray wand but it was only $10 or so at the time. One thing most other hose reel brands don't have which Hoselink does have is the shut off valve so you can change attachments without walking back and turning the water off at the tap……Genius!

    Only $188? What a bargain!!
(it's hard to say that with a straight face!!)

  • Note the BF/CM 10% discount ends midnight tonight on the Hoselink website; so most likely also on Everyday Marketplace.

  • Probably the most overrated hose reel on the market……..I bought the hi flow version which gives good flow, but the reel retract system is clunky to say the least. Prefer my Gardena battery reel over this anyway of the week.

    • -1

Hose link is overrated exactly like Dyson.
      Gardena is the best.

    • +2

Battery reel? Seems like an unnecessary complication and an extra point of failure or maintenance to me.

  • +1

Marketplace? They all want to jump on that platform, but often fail to give you the support that you get from eBay or Amazon.au. Some companies are using marketplace to throw you in the lap of unknown sellers where, you have to fend for yourself if you have a setback.

  • Try Aussie Hoses

  • Something to note if you are moving from a Holman reel to a Hoselink or vice versa (why would you?) The bracket arms are different sizes and you will need to drill new fixing holes.

    • +1

Use timber block for adapting holes.
