  • Our go-to mouthwash x

  • Mouthwash is proven to be very bad for your mouth health as it kills the good bacteria.
    Do your homework

    • Wasn't that only the alcohol ones?

      • There was a study that found the alcohol ones can cause mouth cancer.

        • +1

Hmm what does this say about alcohol haha

      • -1

We have come a long way with brushing, flooding and natural toothpaste that mouthwash is no longer needed.

Mouthwash is a marketing gimmick imo.
        But…
        Cetylpyridinium chloride causes teeth browning
2 ingredients have parabens in it

Then you have the colours, flavours.
        Always check with your dentist.

OralB is rebranded Crest in America, I think.

Yes Oral-B is Crest - made by Proctor & Gamble.

I reckon you're right about mouthwash. A bit of a 20th century product a market was created for. The main 'benefit' it's sold for - bad breath, rarely comes from the mouth anyway. More from the lungs. You can get your mouth as clean and antiseptic as you like, but as soon as you exhale, it'll kill all the daisy's :-)

My hygienist told me your story, she asked about my mouth health care regimen, I mentioned floss, brushing and mouthwash. She said save your money and ditch the mouthwash if you want as it doesn’t work.

So, I did, save a few bucks too.

The following teeth checkups and cleans found far more plaque than previously. I went back to using a mouthwash. I like this one as it has fluoride.

Cetylpyridinium chloride doesn’t cause staining in the vast majority of people.

    • Is that right? I just ordered 3 from here?

I've just starting to use mouthwash recently as the toothpaste doesn't keep my fresh breath long enough

I've recently been on to Proctor & Gamble (P&G) about this. I thought it was a good mouthwash and bought quite a few over recent years (4 bottles last Amazon sale). Last visit to the dentist they charged me $150 to clean off brown staining which they said was cause by an ingredient in mouthwash and, in fact, it is mentioned on the label that it can cause staining. It should be stated as the front as the 8th 'benefit'! They suggest it can be removed by brushing or by a dentist (as I found).

    Cetylpyridinium Chloride

They've offered me $40 supermarket voucher and this is part of what they said:

'Please be guided that like all mouthwash products that effectively fight plaque and gingivitis, Oral-B Pro-Health anti-plaque / anti-gingivitis mouthwash products contain and active ingredient that is recognized as safe and effective. These anti-plaque/anti-gingivitis mouth rinses can contribute to temporary, surface-level brown tooth discoloration.

This tooth discoloration is actually a sign your mouthwash is working. After it kills germs in your mouth, the dead germs can collect on the tooth surface and create the appearance of a brown stain. Brown discoloration is reversible and preventable. To help aid in the removal of tooth surface stain, we recommend a tartar-control/whitening toothpaste, a power toothbrush, floss, and regular dental visits'.

Now call me stupid, but I always used mouthwash AFTER brushing and didn't rinse (as I'm sure I've read not to on other mouthwashes as it's best left in to do its work). I did all they recommended (except not whitening toothpaste as my orthodontist said not to use that).

    • Cleaning teeth is just normal healthcare, $150 is quite reasonable.

Coffee does the same thing. Tooth staining by Cetylpyridinium chloride is unusual.

Personally I think it is like vaccines, the benefits out way the downsides.

      • Sure if it were cleaning due to normal events - fine. This wasn't.

'Unusual' is not the same thing as 'doesn't happen'. To spend $6-10 on a bottle(s) of mouthwash which claims (among other things) to clean teeth, only to find you have to pay $150 to clean off the stains it causes is ridiculous.

    • interesting stuff and glad that you were able to get a response. i always mouthwash and rinse but imagine ive been doing it wrong thisentire time

      • I too rinse after 5-20mins. I figure 80/20 - I will have derived most of the benefits and do not have to ingest the residue every day. It is supposed to be harmless in small amounts, but I prefer no taste in my mouth, especially going to sleep. The ones I use - Listerine Zero (and Colgate Plax before) - both have artificial sweeteners.

  • How does this compare to Colgate and Listerine?

    • This one has fluoride, big benefit.

So don’t buy ten bottles as it will expire. The ones without fluoride can be stored longer,

      • +1

        Does Colgate have flouride?

        • The normal everyday Colgate Plax in supermarkets doesn’t. That’s what I used to use.

          • @Grok: oh damn and I have 3 bottles of that :(

            • @Homr: It’s fine, use it and replace it with this stuff,

    • Listerine does not have Cetylpyridinium Chloride, which Colgate and this one have. Which can stain teeth for some (see comments from others). Unfortunately, it does for me.

I used to use only Listerine (normal with Alcohol) but did not like the burn every day, so a year ago I started using Listerine Zero and Colgate Plax (50/50 mix). My teeth started staining to a degree never seen before. After a while, I thought it was coffee, but I have been drinking coffee forever and always rinse and drink water afterward. I started to suspect Colgate Plax, and some googling confirmed it.

After the dentist removed most of the stains, I now use only Listerine Zero. This also has fluoride, according to the label.

  • Got this last time, but miss the alcohol burn from other products, its almost like this one is just rinsing with flavoured water.

  • MADE IN USA!

Not Thailand, like the Colgate mouthwash rubbish.

But still not as good as the Australian-Made mouthwash range from ALDI, though:
