I'm not telling you to spend your hard earned money on this, but what sort of 'review' channel gives it self the same of the one product it reviewed and then says it's crap?

It's 1100 so you get what you pay for either way

    • +1

Good vid, I wouldn't of expected the laptop to be great in quality anyway if HN or even selling something cheap like this lol..

    • Watched the video… Pretty scathing, I think I'll stick with my Lenovo gaming 3i, it only has a 1650 ti and a worse screen display (though no wobble), but the build quality is excellent compared to this which is imho more important.

    • +3

This is a scathing video. It's a bit much really. They even criticised the laptop for being delivered in the rain…
There are also a plenty of other regular reviewers that praise it as a good budget option (eg Jarrods, Everyday Dad, Mathew Moniz, Ben Kaiser)

I actually just replaced one of these with a Kraken, but still think the Victus is a good laptop. Maybe because I mostly used it with an external monitor (34" 1440p) and mouse and kb, so I didn't get the whole laptop experience.
But the only things that I didn't like about it were the 250nit screen on mine, and the touchpad, and size over the Kraken. Keyboard, power, and temps/fan noise were all pretty good.

    • +3

To be fair the reviewer paid 105,000 INR which is around $1920.

      • More because $ was weaker back then

  • Brilliant find, been waiting on a gaming laptop deal sub $1200, since I missed out on the recent bpc and comp alliance deal, (thinking black Friday sales would offer something good).

    • +4

We wont get any good deals until Christmas/boxing day im calling it. No one does any legit gaming lappy deals round here at these times anymore

      • Nah, all retailers are clearing their stock. There is hardly any stock as is for this Victus. The kraken m15 is completely out of stock

  • Amazing price given they didnt cheap out on the screen.

    • -2

If I was you, I'd watch that vid that was posted a bit further up, its not a good deal.

      • +6

The only other option we get here in oz at this price are 10th gen cpus in an aged nitro chasis from 2018 with 85w 3060 and a washed out screen and thats in a sale also at gerrys.

Kraken x15 was once a lifetime deal and that didn’t come without some (albeit easily remedied) problems.

Will need to pay a good 400-500 $ extra to get a ‘relatively flawless’ legion 5 machine in a (also rare) sale and I sure don’t see lenovo doing one soon given their recent two grand 3050ti legion 5 Black Friday ‘deals’

        • +1

Kraken x15 was once a lifetime deal and that didn’t come without some (albeit easily remedied) problems.

The Kraken has a bulky case, bad keyboard, poor sound, no activated OS…

          • @MuddyClear: if you think the kraken is bulky at 2cm thick or the mech keys are bad most 15' gaming laptops will only be more bulky and keyboard feel more mushy.

poor sound goes for every gaming laptop out there, its not a selling point on them, no good speakers come with even top end alienware or msi or legion. The 'best' speakers on a gaming laptop is on the zephyrus lineup and even then they fell so short of a XPS/mac its not funny.

            • @Brrrrt:

if you think the kraken is bulky…

Based on online reviews and reddit comments from owners. It would be good to know the dimensions on the kraken m15 but I can’t find it anywhere.

              • +1

@MuddyClear: It’s 2cm and 2.2cm with feet included. Size measures at 23.4x 35.6cm and weighs at right under 2kg. This is on the slim & light end considering the full powered 3060 spec. Feel free to check against any legion dell g15 or strix g15 configs and you will see this is more than fine for the form factor

          • @MuddyClear:

The Kraken has a bulky case, bad keyboard, poor sound, no activated OS…

Keyboard is nowhere near as bad as people say online, people also exaggerate the keys not registering from the top or are just really bad typers lol

OEM OS key cost me $17 from key site and works fine

Sound is actually good compared to most gaming laptops.

And no way in hell this thing is "bulky" in any way, shape or form. It is the lightest and thinnest gaming laptop I've ever used in my life and actually makes you impressed at how far tech has come

    • +2

Just cheaped out on the hinge.

      • +1

That screen wobble is trigger inducing.

        • Not noticeable when viewing front on

      • The hinge actually feels pretty solid. It's like, the lid or something that needs to be stiffened up.
It's strange, since the build actually feels pretty solid overall, even the lid. But then you let go and it wobbles 🤔

        • Its likely because the screen and its backing is way too soft it wobbles with just about any vibration.

  • These days is Intel or AMD (very) generally better for a gaming laptop?

    • +2

Pure gaming wise? Intel, scales better on power (>40w) and 50% larger l3 cache. Temp problems are a thing of the past, if a machine throttles with intel it’s the machines problem and amd will throttle all the same.

But who am I kidding this is 1.1k I wouldn’t wait for anything better at or under this price anytime soon. Happy to be wrong though.

  • +1

good deal, excellent quality and performance for the price

  • +1

I have issues with the screen.
I get random black shapes appearing all over the screen.
I have updated the video card drivers but haven't been able to resolve the issue.

    • Appearing randomly across all apps and interfaces? Did a reinstall of the system fix it? May be a hardware problem, could(?) be a ribbon cable problem but could be way worse. Worth going to HP for repairs.

    • If this is during gaming at stock settings, sounds like a faulty GPU.

      • Yes, across all apps.
Happen when the laptop is on idle.
Think it maybe a Windows 10 & video driver issue.

        • +2

Did you run all the updates in HP Support Assistant including bios/firmware? (&Send us a photo?)

    • and you are not returning them with that kind of severe issues?

      • The black shapes are very small, a few pixels wide.
After installing recent video drivers the issue is a lot better. I think it is a windows 10 and driver issue.
I will have another attempt at fixing it, but may have to return it.

  • -2

Is this really bulky? Primarily will be stationary at my desk 90% of the time

    • As bulky as a 16.1" can ever be really. I mean your monitor on your desk if you have one will likely be bigger.

And if you use a keyboard full size one that is. That too will likely be wider than this.

      • Thanks for the comparison with the keyboard, puts it into perspective

    • +1

It feels like a 15" inch laptop.

      • Try it without lube. Might feel like 17in

  • Does this output video over usb c to a dock? is it via thunderbolt or displaylink? thinking of a home office setup to 2 x 1080p screen for office, then swithc to light gaming once the day is over!

    • +1

      Yes does displayport over usb

  • if you connect via hdmi to a 1440 screen, will it maximise the output? or still 1080z

    • +1

You can change in windows settings to display whatever resolution thats under or equal to 1440p as you want mate, two monitors can have different resolutions and windows scalings.

    • +1

If you're duplicating both screens, it will be limited to 1080. If you're extending, both monitor resolutions will be adjusted according to their own requirements.

This is the same for all monitor/display combinations with Windows.

      I've used a 4K monitor with a 720P laptop

  • Which games can you play with this laptop?

    • +4

8 core Ryzen with a 3060 at 1080p? Will be able to play everything. And most things at a high graphic level bar a few of the more unoptimized/demanding titles, but they will still run with some tweaking.

  • +2

I've had this laptop for about 12 months now. Pretty good, no regrets. I bought a laptop stand with fan from which reduced CPU & GPU temps by 5-10'C when gaming.

The only annoyance I have is the battery life is garbage, even since new. Max life I can get when just web browsing is 2 - 2.5 hours and that's with battery saving mode enabled(Windows 10). I've tried the HP calibration process and it didn't improve, not sure if it's normal or if I just had a dud battery from factory. Not a big deal for me personally as I don't move it around that often, but it could be a show stopper for some. Also, HP don't provide a battery charge % limiter in this model to try and preserve battery degradation.

    • +1

What laptop stand did you buy?

    • +3

Battery life in these gaming laptops are exactly that, my 5600H/3050M is exactly the same.

The only way you can get more battery for mobile use is by turning off the dGPU (NVIDIA) from the device driver settings while it's being used as a portable computer.

      • That's good to know. I did read a bunch of reviews where they were discussing possibly 4-5 hours runtime, but I couldn't work out how they were achieving that.

I'll try your suggestion regarding disabling the Nvidia GPU in device manager. Task manager always reports the NVIDIA as 0% usage when just browsing/using office, and only activity on the AMD GPU so I assumed it was disabled the NVIDIA when not needed, but I'll give it a go. Cheers.

        • +1

You just set the power option when on battery mode to use igpu instead of dgpu.

    • +3

I bought this exact laptop for ~$1250 a couple of months ago. After doing a couple of tweaks in control panel and making sure it doesn't use the dGPU on battery, the laptop consumes around 9 watts per hour (measured using batterybar pro) when browsing and it lasts 7+ hours. Gaming battery life is crap though.

      • +1

Thanks mate. Do you mind sharing which tweaks you did in particular? I'm going to give Jimbuscus's idea a go, but if you had any other tips it might be handy for anyone else buying now. Maybe Windows 11 might have come with the proper settings by default.

        • +2

Don't disable the gpu in device manager, that'll make it run at its default wattage setting and not disable itself when not in use. Also, I recommend getting a piece of software called batterybar (download the free version, it works just fine). It shows the amount of watts that the laptop is using at that point in time.

          General Tweaks:
          - Power saving mode in the HP OMEN bloatware
          - Turned on windows power saving,
          - Set default gpu to integrated in Nvidia Control Panel

          Power Plan Tweaks:
          - Set wireless adapter settings to maximum performance on both battery and when plugged in (the wifi card runs like crap on low power)
          - Switchable dynamic graphics set to force power saving graphics on battery (iGPU instead of dGPU)
          - AMD Powerplay settings set to optimize battery when not plugged in

  • +5

For the specs alone, you're not going to beat it. People posting vids etc, of course it's not a perfect laptop. But I've been looking at laptop prices for months, and there is nothing that even comes close to these specs in the 1k bracket. Closest you're getting atm, is the Nitro at 400 bucks more and that's also not exactly known for it's quality.

Would grab this if I was a poor uni student who wanted to do gaming that didn't break the wallet. If you want better quality, then be prepared to spend 500 - 1k more for the specs.

And this from someone who personally buys Razers as his work laptop even though all i read is QC issues with them (mines still going 3 years deep no issues).

  • Casual gamer here, will this run WoW with no issues?

  • +1

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=W18HaYdl3VM&ab_channel=Jarro…

Best gaming laptop reviewer on the net says its not bad and the best budget option. What more do you need?

    • Less scathing review than the one above 😂

      • +1

I always watch Jarods videos. Only criticism I would give him is he loves Lenovo ALOT.

but he's usually pretty honest and unbiased.

  • Is it available to price match JB Hi Fi.

    • Jb dont stock this model unfortunately.

      • Omg its so annoying :( Would have been good deal.

      • So only Harvey Norman selling this model?

        • Maybe some online retailers stock this one but not at this price and they certainly dont offer price beat.

  • +1

I would be keen, but 16" is too big for me.

Current is 15", I do like it but I'd rather something more portable.

Good specs tho for the price.

    • Most 15 inch laptops are 15.6 inch so it's only 0.4 inch diff but yes still chonk

    • The chassis is 15.6” with 16” screen

  • Wondering if HDMI can output 4k@120hz (not for gaming but for office use)

    • a bit late but yes because it have a HDMI 2.1 port

  • decided to get one, been waiting for around 1k 3060 laptop.

    16 inch is a bonus.

  • I purchased the MSI GV15 for $880 on Amazon during Black Friday:
    https://www.amazon.com.au/gp/product/B09S4NBX1Z/ref=ppx_yo_d…

Now wondering if I should cancel that and get this instead. Any advice? $218 more but 16gb ram and the RTX3060 is tempting.

    • +3

      This one is way better..

8 core CPU vs 4 Core
GPU is almost twice as fast 45w 1650 vs 95w 3060

Even the other HP deal for $800 with a 6 core CPU and AMD RX5500 is better

    • +2

      Way better!
      R7 vs i5.
      Double storage
      Double memory
      3060 6gb vs 1650 4gb

  • Is 300nits bright enough for around the house

    • +1

      Yes, but not for outside.

  • +2

Man, i pulled a trigger yesterday for Acer Inspire 7 ( GTX 1650 )for $854
    and now this shows up?!
It has good review and Jarrod even compared HP with Lenovo.
In short, totally worth it for this price.

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=W18HaYdl3VM&ab_channel=Jarro…
    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_4EqjHfuCmk&ab_channel=Jarro…

    • Victus > Inspire

      • I know.
at least the specs of my acer Inspire are not too bad.

        Intel Core i5-12th Gen, 144Hz, 16GB RAM, 512GB SSD, Nvidia GTX 1650 for $854.
I'm debating whether should i cancel the Acer and get this HP Victus.

        • Cancel the acer and get the victus.

        • I would cancel, the Victus build quality is a lot better than Inspire.

  • +1

This is really good value and a great find honestly. Hard to get better for this price

  • damn amazing price, shame I already about the Nitro 5 a while back. Its been alright, even if the cooling leaves something to be desired

  • Does anyone know how is it different to the one JB sells?

    https://www.jbhifi.com.au/products/hp-victus-16-fhd-144hz-ga…

    • Cpu for starters. Amd for this one. Intel for the one from jbhifi.

      • Intel one is more expensive for some reason

Also, I don’t think you can undervolt the AMD one. Note sure why

  • I know 40-series is around the corner and will be good, but this is a great price.

    • HODL?

      • wont get it anywhere round this price. expect 2k for entry tier 4060 laptops and by entry tier I mean a laptop of builds worse than this

  • I bit the bullet. Why not, I can claim it on tax in July.

    • Only if you work from home…

      • Why does it have to be only if you work from home?

I work in an IT field. I could claim this whether i work from home or not. Matter of fact i claimed a laptop on tax before the pandemic and i didnt work from home then.

        • You work in an IT field that doesn’t provide you with the necessary equipment (eg laptop) for work?

          • @MuddyClear: Yeah not all IT company are that rich they can provide one. And even if they did provide one. Still won't stop you buying one for yourself and claiming it on tax.

So long as you use it for work purposes its all above board to the accountant and the tax man.

            • @xoom: Are you able to prove you use it for work x% of the time? How do you prove it?

              • @MuddyClear: Well we have softphones and vpns? That enough?

Don't get me wrong I'm sure there are those out there buying laptops claiming it's for work but never actually use it for work.

  • +2

    Don’t need…Game on desktop…bought anyway…$25 delivery.

  • +2

Let's put it this way: If the Kraken NUC is available at the $1,200 mark then get that one.

If you are in need of a budget laptop that could potentially last for 3-4 years then this is the next best thing. The screen hinge flex happened on my Acer Nitro 5 11400h so not a problem there. Thermal wise this one runs WAY better than the Acer Nitro 5 so if this deal came out before the Acer I'd grab this one in a heartbeat.

All in all this is a VERY solid choice sub $1,100. You won't get anything better at this price point period. Even Black Friday/Cyber Monday didn't have anything close to this one in terms of price/performance ratio so grab it now if you need a decent budget gaming laptop that could run all modern and upcoming games at a smooth 60FPS at Ultra/Highest setting at 1080p.
