If your ac system has no gas then you have bigger issues.

AC leaks aren't always catastrophic, perhaps it's leaked past an oring or other piece of AC system over a few years. Might as well just get it serviced for $100 rather than spending thousands replacing components.

  • Would like to hear about similar deals in Melbourne's eastern suburbs!!

    • Count me in!

      Ditto, but Brisbane

Hang on, aren't you misinterpreting a re-gas with a service?
Gas costs money and as others mentioned, it also means you likely have issues with leaks. This $99 deal is nothing to do with repairs or re-gassing does it?

I might be wrong - that pages says:

I just clicked the link. You're right, so for $99 they stick a temp probe in your air vent, push the drive belt with their finger to check the tension, and blow some compressed air over the condenser. Nice little scam for the unsuspecting.

$99 doesn't pay for much workshop time.
Expect to be advised of at least hundreds of dollars of work required.
How much does it cost to get an o-ring replaced (with a second regas since the gas will have to be pumped out and reused)?

        • I just paid about $280 at auto masters, reseal and regas. 'slight' leak but it's a 17 year old car and this was it's first ac service. still worked but performance slowly diminished over the years.

          • @nismoau: That's good. My car had part of the circuit rust out and lose all gas when it was 8 years old.
Local air con guy did all the work for about $400, which was very reasonable.

“stick a temp probe in your air vent”

The temp probe likely looks suspiciously similar to the apprentice’s pinky finger.

    This aint no bargain

    • John Hughes and bargain in the same sentence is an oxymoron from the getgo

You can just DIY all the mentioned servicing in under 5 minutes at home.
It will take you longer to drive to them.
If you drive the car and use the air-con, you are already checking the temperature.
Drive Belt Tension you can use your finger or listen for the noise.
Clean Aircon Condenser you can hose it down with a garden hose, but not too much pressure.

They will not include any parts in their service, but will upsell you with a huge markup.

Yep it's unclear from the ad or misleading, but I can assure you that they re gassed my air con (on a 4x4) for $99, as agreed per the phone call. They did say that if additional issues were found they would contact me.

And totally agree if it was 99 for those three check it would be a big rip off.

    • How much refrigerant does a 4x4 take - a kg? Which is gotta be worth a bit of money and time too.
Maybe they make money from those that don't need a regas?

      • I don't really know but I would assume they just top up the gas levels. I don't think it's a hard process based on youtube research.

I think they get you on the extra 'additional work' and your client details info.

Without the ad clarifying that it actually includes a regas, this feels like buying magic beans.

    • I agree but if you ring up and mutually agree to what's expected then I think you more likely to have a better experience.
