How Much Phone Data Do You Use Per Month?

So this thread got me thinking on how much data people actually use per month? Many comments have high data allowances and good bang for buck (should be OzBargain's Motto!)

So in a 30-day period (might be a calendar month or your billing period depending on your cycle), what range bracket do you fit into?

Personally, most months I use under 20GB since I WFH full time and connect to WiFi at the office. I have a 180GB allowance but it is pooled giving a total of 224GB for the family.

How much do you use?

Sorry, cannot add any more options to the poll

I think you need to add a few more options.

  • About 600MB so definitely the under 10GB poll option. My NBN connection, that's another story.

How are you even getting close to 20GB if you have wifi at work and WFH?

    • Mainly GPS and Spotify (plus other stuff) when driving. I am in a regional area, so driving or going anywhere can be an hour's drive at least.

        Mainly GPS and Spotify

Are you not able to download offline maps and/or offline songs to save on data usage?

      • GPS should not use data and Spotify should use about 0.04Gb per hour.

      • Use Here maps offline, tells you speed limits on road too unlike google which only tells speed limit on certain roads only

My phone reports the following statistics:

    Mobile Data

    Month Data
    September 15.53 GB
    October 24.79 GB
    November 12.65 GB
    December 3.08 GB

    Wi-Fi

    Month Data
    September 11.14 GB
    October 24.25 GB
    November 36.14 GB

I suppose it's worth noting that sometimes I have Wi-Fi turned off on my phone because 5G is faster and more reliable around the house.
Probably explains why November was less data and more Wi-Fi.

Last month which I guess would be an average month I used 2.5gb. I think you need some better options.

    Less than 1GB.

Should be a low user option (maybe <1GB and <5GB) as a lot of people would use nowhere near 10GB

  • I use 1 byte.

  • phone shows last three months, 2.4Gb was the max with 600mb tethering (xbox when home internet spotty). normally 1.7ish
    .

  • Definitely less than 10. Connect to wifi when at home or in the office, and I’m normally not downloading large files when on 4G.

Reminds me of a convo I had with my dad a few months ago.

He was on a plan with 100GB per month. I asked him why, and he said that it was only $10 extra per month to jump from 50GB to 100GB. Checked his usage and he hasn’t breached 10GB for the previous 6 months…

    • That's how the sales person pitches

    Not enough diverse poll options

  • I'm at maybe a gig or two monthly, since I'm always on wifi.

Instead, my FTTC is generally at least a terabyte per day, but that'll be a separate poll

  • What is the purpose of this poll? How does anyone else's usage habits inform me of anything?

All I know is I'm generally happy with my current provider/plan (so don't want to change) and I don't exceed my limit (so don't need to change).

  • Even though I'm less than 1GB a month it's not really worth it to go with a low data plan. That will cost $105.60 for a year @ $8.80 a month. I can get a lot more data for about that, which I probably won't use, but things can change so why not.

    I suppose I could go Moose 6GB monthly for a year @ $8.80.

  • fwiw when polling like this consider exponentially spacing your options, e.g. simply by doubling:

    under 1 GB, 1-2 GB, 2-4 GB, 4-8 GB, 8-16 GB, 16-32….

Statistically, you'll cover everyone evenly in the least number of options. The data you have now is going to be mostly useless as you have most people lumped in the same option.
