REX: Full Service: ADL ↔ MEL from $69, SYD ↔ GC $69, SYD ↔ MEL $70, SYD ↔ BNE $73, MEL ↔ CBR $82 @ Beat That Flight

680

Rex is a full service (checked luggage, carry on luggage, refreshments) airline, flying mostly 737-800NGs on these routes (Ex Virgin planes).

They're running a promo where their midweek fares are less, so I've gone through early 2023 find the cheapest flights on all their routes. Hopefully it helps someone!

On some of the dates, Jetstar or Virgin may show up cheaper if applicable (eg $40 on way on some of the routes with Jetstar), but Rex does include checked luggage and refreshments, while Jetstar and usually Virgin now charge for checked luggage. All include carry-on luggage.

There are hotels on sale as well, don't forget to book yours.

  • No Adelaide to / from Sydney?

    • Goes via MEL.

    • +1

They only have 6 jets, so it's very limited at this stage.

      • +1

And with that - minor ground or airborne delays have a compounding effect on the rest of the days schedule.

        • However your luggage gets to the destination in one piece with Rex. In contrast, with Qantas…

  • +3

REX all the way! Bye to JetCancel.

  • +7

Love Rex. Wish they's expand their network.

  • +14

Nice, heard they're flying biggies now

    • +1

Came here just for this comment

  • Rather drive than fly Rex

    • +3

      What's your preferred airline?

  • +3

    Hey OP,

Think some of your prices are out….

e.g. You have MEL-SYD 26th FEB price as $91 - When I click your link, the cheapest for REX on that day is $108.
And SYD-MEL on 6th MAR also as $91 - but again is showing $108.

Checked other random dates and can't get prices advertised…. have they gone up since you have posted?
Or am I doing something wrong.

    Thanks

    • Probably increasing as the seats sell out

  • -3

Still prefer Qantas, for a guaranteed flight… and their lounge is good.

    • +3

Qantas domestic lounges are relatively arse but since I am a tightarse who doesn’t spend money in the airport I still like it.

Also in Brisbane the premium lounge entry / security is a solid perk.

Another thing to love about Brisbane - it’s actually feasible to fly Jetstar and use the Qantas lounge. Unlike in Melbourne where the Qantas terminal is about as far from the Jetstar gates as you can make it.

      • I haven't been able to check out the Premium Lounge Entry out of BNE yet but hoping for one here in Melbourne sometime soon.
The Qantas Club lounges are not the best and I wouldn't want to spend more than 30 mins in them.
The Qantas Business lounges are the way to go, great lounges across Aus and especially handy in transits when coming off Intl flights (DPS-SYD-MEL or SFO-SYD-MEL)
And the Chairmans lounges is something I'll have to try to get access to at another time haha

        • +1

The Chairmans lounges are not what you might expect, I've been in twice and they are very quiet and not a lot going on or on offer (perhaps some like that but not for me). I'd much rather the business lounges any time of the day :)

    • +2

If by guaranteed you mean delayed by 2 hours+?

Work flies me Qantas and it's Been an honest nightmare.

      • +2

Yep, I fly for mostly business purposes and around 50% of my flights are with Qantas, over the last 6 months they have been diabolical for delayed flights.

  • +5

Rex is the go, u know virgin and qantas are gouging us when rex can do the flights for half the price of virgin or qantas and still make money

    • +4

They don't do them for half the price of Virgin from my experience, half the price of Qantas though, yes.

It's hard to compare ultimately, as you are comparing an airline with currently 6 jets and hardly any routes (cap city), and only 2 small lounges, so it all depends on what you like and whether this fits the destinations you travel between.

Hopefully, they end up with a bigger network in the end, but that'll be a long way off at this stage.

All competition is good, whether you fly with them or a competitor :)

      • +2

Yeah, Rex currently dont have any plans to acquire more than 2 dry leased aircraft until mid-next year, and with no orders on the books.
I wouldn't be surprised that for next year or even longer that they are just focusing on main business routes.

        • +3

Yep, the "golden triangle" is where its at for them (mostly) at this point (cap city wise).

          • @SimAus007: Well for clarity i only fly syd to bris and return hence my comment

If virgin is within 20bux of them i fly virgin to get the lounge and have a meal for free each way

But i fly based on price not the other stuff like lounge and express checkin etc

    • +1

They're not making money afaik. They reported some pretty sizable losses in the latest financials. Still trying to gain marketshare because they don't have a loyalty program up and running yet and with nothing else major to differentiate it has to be on price.

I do enjoy flying them though. Nice service especially since they're at Jetstar or cheaper than jetstar prices.

      • Their own press release in october says as of Sept they were in the black

  • +1

Really had a crap experience with Rex, had to get a last flight out of SYD.
Flight was delayed and delayed and then canned due to curfew.

Got an email and was rebooked on a flight in 2 days time at the airport…
Tried to call up the phone line to change, but to no avail.
Tried to get a refund, got 50% back.

Overall a really shocking airline Rex, albeit its a better offering than Jetstar.

    • +2

This, unfortunately, is the issue with only having 6 jets.
Although they should pay for your flight on either Virgin, Qantas or Jetstar if it's severely delayed, as the others do.

  • +1

Went through REX recently and I was impressed. airline without all the bs addons and consumer traps, plus great service. Where possible all future flights through them hopefully

  • +1

I heard Rex do biggies now

  • -4

Rex if you want a tiny plane and rubbish service. Qantas is always superior.

    • +4

Is this satire? Both fly B737's on the main routes. They are exactly the same. The majority of Rex's Boeing fleet are ex Virgin planes. They have the exact same economy and business seats as Qantas.

Plus have you even been following the news the last 6 months?!?

    • Qantas superior hah, good one chief

You must not fly very often

And rex virgin and qantas all use the same planes, the 737

  • +3

I personally think that ↔ means return, not one way.

    • +2

Nope, it means in either direction, a return is a semi circle with an arrow at one end, denoting you've ended back where you left.
All domestic flights are advertised one way as a standard.

  • +3

I do a lot of travel and after a Qantas cancellation that cost me a delay in a 6 figure contract, I moved my travel over to Rex and so far haven't had a late or cancelled flight in the last 3 months I've been using them. The only complaint I have is that they use T4 in Melbourne and I absolutely hate that terminal. I have a bad knee, and wear a pretty hardcore brace as a result, and the terminal is VERY long. Their business class is just wonderful and much more affordable than Qantas.

    • As a blind passenger who requires assistance through terminals, i feel your pain; T4 is an absolute nightmare, and Qantas is the only carrier now not using it.

      • +1

I thought Virgin still used T3 at Tullamarine.

        • They do for most of their flights, it's very rare that I've left in T4 for Virgin in the last 12 months but it can happen if T3 is congested.
Rex uses T4 for all jet flights I believe.

  • came here for return prices after seeing ↔ :(

  • Is it worth taking an overnight coach or train if I want to travel Melbourne - Sydney? The flight ticket seems cheaper, but airport buses to/from the airports are not exactly cheap and take time too. Coach/Train stops right in the city so it's quite hassle-free.

    • +2

Whats a train trip but, like 8hrs of clicky clack on a busted ass diesel train?

The pro tip for sydney domestic if u dont have much baggage is walk from mascot station, its only 15min
