  • Amazon… time to price match!

  • I wonder why all of the description is about a gopro hero 11?

Curious as to what people use these for? I see them quite a bit along with nest hub but most reviews just say the screens are super laggy that it's not great to use

    • +2

the screen is too small in my opinion

      • +1

I'm confident that my 5" is big enough to make people using it happy

        • +2

          Did you get reviews?

Agree that it's pretty laggy, use mine as a bedside clock/alarm that I can use to control some smart lights and plugs via voice commands. Also occasionally as a speaker.

I only use mine as if it was an echo dot with a clock - in Living room
Can potentially drop in if family is in Amazon ecosystem.
8" is to big and not great apps - sold it
7" nest hub is better - have one on bedside table

The odd movie, YT video, music/podcast, Alexa, doorbell cam plus time/alarm clock. It can be a little laggy now & again, but nothing to complain about at this price point. Don't forget there was a time you'd spend this much just for an analogue / LED clock alone, later on AM/FM, CD, WiFi, BT etc, but for a lot more $$.

Screen isn't all that useful, it has a camera you can drop in from remotely if you have pets you wanna watch.

Otherwise my wife and I just use it for our shopping list in the kitchen. Just yell out what you need as you run out of it and it updates in the app for you. It's a good system.

It also pairs with eufy doorbells and video cameras, so it can act as a doorbell chime if you need it to. Eufy doesn't work with google smart products.

We have an Echo Show 8 in the lounge room - our main uses, in order of importance:
      -clock
-turn on Xbox One (media centre) & TV by voice, and to pause Netflix or whatever
-video drop in, to watch son in highchair while going to make him toast in the kitchen, etc.
-smart speaker (tell the weather, answer random question, or play a random song)

We also have an Echo Dot in the bedroom - bought one of these (Echo Show 5) to replace it. Basically just to use as a clock, and smart speaker to play random songs to distract son while changing / dressing him.

We had planned to use the Echo Show 8 to display the baby camera feed from our Nanit, but it is absolutely horrendous for that (too laggy to be useful), so we dont bother with that.

Could we live without them? Absolutely, without a question! But do they do enough to justify their existence? Enough for us (barely). YMMV

Ring doorbell to answer the front door - not reliable
Turn on the aircon via my switchbot - not reliable
      Look at the time
      Tell me the weather
Annoy me to rate my past amazon purchases

  • Can this echo display a webpage - say the webpage from home assistant?

  • I can’t apply the code anymore? Anyone else having issues?

  • If you're weighing this up with the Echo 8, and you want a full screen, and more customisable clock, go with this Echo 5. I just found out the Echo 8 can't do a full screen clock (other than a pixelated accessibility zoom option). So an 8 is fine if you mainly want it as a picture frame, but go the 5 if you want a full screen clock (or at least the option - it doesn't need to be full screen)
