Gonna bring this in to office. My vegan friends will love me, thanks!

Negging because this costs $20 in South Australia from farmers who love Kangaroo's.

    • Which farmers?

  • -2

    Lol gross

Negative. Tasmanian does not have a species known as a "Tasmanian Grey 'Soft Fur' Kangaroo" which the OP has mentioned twice.

If these are sourced from Tassie, they are either Forester kangaroo or a Bennetts wallaby.

    https://parks.tas.gov.au/discovery-and-learning/wildlife/lan…

    • It's killed by Tasmanian farmers. You only have two kangaroo species in Tassie?

Title in a roundabout way suggests they are using grey kangaroo, sourced from Tasmania, and the fur is soft.

I'm guessing there are some grey kangaroo in Tasmania, which are not native to the area, and are culled with permission by local farmers protecting their crops and fencing.

      • No. No feral greys. One kangaroo and one wallaby species in Tas.

    • +3

Eastern Grey aka Great Grey aka Forester Kangaroo

    • +3

Eastern grey kangaroos have 2 subspecies. One of which is Macropus giganteus tasmaniensis, which is commonly known as the Forester Kangaroo and endemic to Tasmania.

  • Do they do wombat?

    • Or koala skin?

  • Any deals on the Deer skin?

I hope everyone horrified by this doesn’t eat meat

    • +4

I'm not horrified but I certainly have a good idea of the type of person who owns and displays something this hideous in their house.

    • Pelts are responsibly sourced from kangaroos that dies of natural causes, like roadkill.

Always supported but won't support for this

  • -1

If you own this and have this in your house, you are most likely to be a very weird person.

    • +1

Because they don't align with your personal beliefs they are very weird?

      • +1

No because it's a rug made of festering road kill you see every day on the side of a street and it's ugly?

        • So because you don't like where it came from and the way it looks, other people who buy it are "very weird". Lucky people don't care about your opinion, and if they do they shouldn't lol.

    Do you sell Echidna Rugs??

They have an issue with the product, that's a valid negative vote.

So much hate for this retailer every time they post here.

For what it's worth I've bought UGG boots and slippers from them in the past numerous times for myself and family members, and never had an issue in quality.

Anyone reading this shouldn't just listen to the very vocal haters. Every organisation is going to have negative experiences, and whilst I don't doubt the accounts given here, some of the comments have been very unfair. Plus vote for the deal, even if I have no intention of buying a rug. Too many negs here not based on the rules for voting.

    • +4

Too many negs here not based on the rules for voting.

Agree, There's like 1 valid neg on this deal. Tried reporting one, but got 'no action taken' response. I thought you had to justify negs? I don't think 'lol gross' is appropriate justification.
I'm not gonna buy one either, as I don't want a kangaroo rug, but unless you can show somewhere selling the equivalent for less, or are noting serious issues with the retailer, why are you negging the deal? This is a deals site after all.

    • Agreed. WatchNerd’s obsession with op every time they post is borderline harassment.

    • Too many negs here not based on the rules for voting.

Report any negative votes and if they're deemed invalid by the mods they will be removed.

government permits to cull kangaroos on their land.

Ah yes, the old Tassie gov permits. Beginning with the extinction of the Tassie Tiger and still handed out today to anyone wanting to sell a cheap rug.

Thousands of native animals killed every year including wombats. They never know the exact population numbers to make culling decisions. It's all about what the spotlight picks up.

    on their land.

Their land? LOL. And what happens when the native animals have nowhere to go because farmers with shotguns and permits own all the land?

When the culling of animals is incentivised by commercial agendas like "bargain rugs for Christmas", it means permit applications are motivated by more than "crop protection".

    • +1

I agree - this is bad.

  • +3

Bought one - contacted support as it had stains and was rough- provided them with photos.
Received replacement which was even worse , dirty, dusty, poorly packed and a lot smaller.
    Save your $$
nnow the associate will ask for the order # so here it goes #66765

Note- i bought the sheep one in past and was happy with that though.
The roo rug quality is somewhat similar to that sold in Paddy's market in sydney CBD

  • To those complaining about a hard rug - this is a manufacturing problem and should not have passed QC. The tanning process has failed to produce a soft leather. If the leather is tanned properly it will be soft and supple. Older or Male Kangaroo have thicker hairs and this can affect the bend in the skin compared to younger. The skin should bend or fall freely when held. If it is like cardboard return it!

        interesting
can they be 100% Australian made if you use soles made overseas
not once have you said your soles are made in Australia

you have previously said your soles were made overseas
        https://www.ozbargain.com.au/comment/12427774/redir

then denied ever saying the above and said your supplier was based in South Australia
        https://www.ozbargain.com.au/comment/12754349/redir

but continue to refuse to let us know if your South Australian supplier supplies Australian made soles

could you confirm whether your soles are Australian made
        thanks

    Hello possum

  • +1

Shonky rep behaviour including making false claims about a fake kangaroo species…negging for this, past issues & as a warning to others.

    • Soooo… the reason for your neg is because of other people's "past issues", and not because you've had an issue with the retailer yourself?

Giving a neg because of a discrepancy on the name of the kangaroo quoted and a "warning to others", is a pretty flimsy reason to neg imo and just sounds like you're piling on.

But good-O… I hope your warning is heeded ;).

      • Cute.

      • +3

Isn't that how a review system works? You read other buyers past reviews and make your decision based on that?

The issues raised in this thread aren't only related to kangaroo rugs. These are common issues with most of their products and their reps attitude on here.

        • -2

You're talking about reviews/opinions, not votes… which have specific guidelines here: https://www.ozbargain.com.au/wiki/help:voting_guidelines

          • +1

@UFO: The graph in your link has under the guidlines for a negative vote "issue with product" and "issue with retailer". That is exactly what the negative votes are about.

            • @ohyesss: Should've gone to Specsavers champ. That's not what some of these negative votes are being cast as…. hence the reason for my post. Anyway, enough wasting my time, have a good one. (nice neg btw :))

    • false claims about a fake kangaroo species

That's like saying someone selling bell peppers is selling a fake vegetable because you call it capsicum… Tasmanian Grey Kangaroo == Forester Kangaroo

      • You'd think if they're experts & understand their product and its origins, they'd at least get the taxonomy correct.

  • +3

Please do your due diligence prior to purchasing - kangaroo fur is nothing like sheepskin in my opinion, so the fact that the product is described as being 'soft', 'luxurious' & having 'superior comfort & warmth' could be considered to be worded in bad faith for anyone expecting a sheepskin-like experience.

    • I think this is really good advice for any purchase, however it's also worth acknowledging that ones definition of soft, luxurious, etc. may be different to others. It's all relative.

I purchased a couple to line the kennels of my parents dogs. Hopefully they will arrive for Christmas.

      Cheers

  • Great quality, love mine.

  • +1

Forget ethics or quality… the real reason to avoid this is that it’s extremely ugly
