    ugh, I want it.

Indeed a great little lens and at this price it's an absolute steal.

I preferred keeping the XF 16-55 2.8 attached to my bodies but at over twice the weight of this 23mm I did always second guess myself :D

  • owned it and its decent if you like the 35mm FL
Personally doesnt do anything for me

  • Great lens and great price

  • Want it but i have the 27" pancake already.
    Hard to justify.

    • Honestly, they're way different lenses! If you're looking to shot environmental portraits or in low light, you should consider the 23 f1.4!

      • yeah i know but the cost of lenses keeps piling up!

  • I bought the XF23/2 from Digidirect for $478 during Black Friday, I think that's the better deal here. This is a decent lens but it is a bit old now, lacking AF and WR and heavier than the smaller 23/2. I feel the wiser decisions is either go for the 23/2 or the newer 23/1.4 LM WR. YMMV.

Err, I've been out of the X mount system for a while now, but I'm like 99.99% sure this has AF. It's not a linear motor (LM) autofocus lens, but it is an autofocus lens if I recall correctly.

Between this and the 23/2 I'd still go with this.

      • Got one of this.

autofocus OK, i just dont like that I need to slide the ring in/out to change between manual and auto focus - which means not that great for video, if i need to switch between auto and manual mode

        • Focus clutch, i have that on the 14mm and use it a lot. although 14mm gets to infinity very fast anyhow

        • just leave it on auto and use manual mode with back button focusing on the body?

    • You might not LIKE the AF, but it's certainly there

23/2 is a totally different lens to 23/1.4 - you just can't get the same bokeh and low light performance with f2.8 or 2 as you can with 1.4. If I were shooting portraits or in low light, I'd take the older 1.4 any day. If I were travelling, then maybe the f2.

p.s. the 23/2 has terrible close focusing (hazy and soft at close distances).

      • Agreed. I have both. Been meaning to offload the 23/2 for a 35/2 or 1.4. The soft focusing annoyed me. I know most lenses aren't great wide open but this was another level. It is only ok at f2.8 and great at 4 but I figured I might as well use the 28mm at that point.

If you just shoot nothing within 1-2m you're fine, but that's annoying.

  • I like the clutch mf unlock. I wish the 56mm had that

  • I have the 27mm, 35f1.4, 23f2 and this 23f1.4. This lens is almost permanently stuck to my camera the other 3 are almost always shelved. One of my favorite lens..

    • what do you normally shoot subject wise? I ordered already but not 100% when to bring it yet, so far I'm guessing anything indoor like food would be good, since the 35mm I have to lean back to take photos of people and or food in front of me.

      • The 23mm (35mm full frame equiv) is actually versatile. I shoot anything from portraits to landscapes, street and also food. Although its bigger than the 23f2, I do not mind the size at all. With the extra stops of light and bokeh it can create, makes it worth it to carry this instead of the f2 variant

Have this lens since XT1 days, fantastic built quality! Probably still one of the best prime lens with this aperture. Those pancake lens can’t beat this beast. One thing to note is, the 23mm is somewhat in between, not wide and not close, which is perfect for street photography you have space and flexibility, and with f1.4, sweet at night, amazing bokehhhhhh
