Seconds later… you're bitch slapped from the passenger sitting behind. Taking it from their left open hand
"Keep your eyes on the road" Or you'll take the next right.

    • Take my next left outta your mouth

    • What sort of ridiculous questioin is this?

Is this a test of the Queens English? (or the Kings?)
      Or a driving test?

    • Hmm..

left open hand as in their left hand was open, or their hand was left open?
next right as in the next hand being the right, or as an open question "take the next, right?"

  • +5

It's next left and then second left.

  • +15

Just turn right to avoid confusion

    • Rather than left or right, moderate could be good bet.

      • left indicator, then turn right.

If I say “see you next Saturday” is it in 2 days or 9?

    • +3

      Haha, 9 days! Always.

      • -1

Nope, not if it's said on a Sunday.

        • +2

I would always assume the one coming up first but you would be surprised how often people say next Saturday or next left and skip the first one!!!! I think they are wrong. NEXT means the one coming up!!!

    • It depends on which day of the week it currently is.

      • Hmmm interesting. So given today is Thursday, for which day would you first add “next”?

    • +1

If today is Saturday, "next Saturday" is in 7 days.

If today is NOT Saturday, "next Saturday" is ambiguous!!!

If today is Thursday, Saturday is in 2 days, and "Saturday week" is in 9 days.

Sounds like you've had way too much time to think about this brain teaser , or your smoking something horrible!

  • Turn left NOW is wrong, because I've done that before and it's always the street (immediately) after

The GPS/maps will give you ample time/distance to get to the turn.

Next Saturday is the one coming up, unless you're talking with people, in that case it will actually be Saturday after next.

    • One day my GPS was like, "turn left", but I had just passed by the street. It rerouted. "Turn left" it said again. But I had just passed by the street. It rerouted. "Turn left" it said again. But I had just passed by the street…

      • You don't have a wife, do you? 🤣

It's probably on the right… you know "the other left"

Is this the latest shit posting meme??

Again, as before, it is positional. If you are at or almost at a left turn, next means "not that one there, keep going". If you are in between lefts, next means the one coming up.

Why is this so hard to get people's heads around?

    • +1

I hope I never have you navigating for me.

      • +7

I hope to never have you as my driver, so the feeling is mutual.

Well said, have my up vote @pegaxs

it is always followed by "This one?" "Yes!!! This one!!!" dialogue. No confusion whatsoever.

"Take the first exit at the roundabout", do you mean "turn left at the roundabout" Siri?

    • +4

The first exit isn't always left.

      • +1

She should say left if the exits are roughly 90 degrees apart though

        • +1

You're right. Counting exits is not normal behaviour but apps require it. Then they get it wrong sometimes - counting an entrance as well as an exit so saying "take third exit" for going straight. I have to check the map to determine whether what it said is what it meant.

I guess there are idiots that would take "go straight across roundabout" literally.

and I know there are occasional roundabouts with more exits than could be considered left, straight and right, but I'd still rather a description other than counting exits.

          • @SlickMick: There is a roundabout near me with 6 exits and 3 of them are lefts, depending on direction of course.

            • @mapax: I gotta admit some roundabouts would take a bit of explaining to describe which exit, and counting them avoids that issue. But also, as I said, the count has issues on some too.

I'd be okay with an exit number on roundabouts with more than a left, straight and right if there isn't a standard way to describe it.

Personally, I'd be happy with degrees. "Turn at 30/45/60 degrees" but I'm sure not all would be happy with that.

But for the majority of roundabouts, left/straight/right is the simplest and clearest.

            • +1

@mapax: Technically all of them are lefts, since you turn the wheel to the left to exit the roundabout :P

              • @Chandler: Maybe that's the answer… like rally car driving… turn left in 3…2….1.. NOW!

          • +1

@SlickMick: I haven't ever counted exits, but like to look at the blue line on the map to see the rough angle it makes and align that with the likely exit. This doesn't work on those crazy roundabouts you can find in Sydney with 9 exits all right near each other 😂

      • +2

The first exit isn't always left.

By definition every exit from a roundabout is a left when you get to it.

        • This would also resolve the other disputes re this exit or next exit etc… just turn left when the app says to

        • Is it though?

On approach to your typical 4 exit roundabout, the first exit is indeed left.

And for the other exits, you might also be indicating left to exit, but in reality, to exit any circular path, you take the tangent, or…straight ahead.

If you're at a left turn, next left will be the one after the one you're at.
If you're not at a left turn, next left will be the one coming up.

  • +2

Depends if there is a 'current' left.

ie. Should I take this left? No, take the next one.

  • +4

I find this interesting especially compared to:
next left = one coming up
next Friday = Friday after this Friday

    • +3

this does my head in. its exactly as i do it and is completely contradictory

    • +1

I suspect that is why OP posed the question.
