How Much Do You Tip in Bali?

Do you tip at Bali restaurants, spa, taxi/ ride share, room service, etc. even though they have a Service Charge? How much?

I do a mental math, 10,000 IDR is like 1 AUD. That's pretty much nothing is it? I remember this tourist couple wearing Gucci that didn't tip at all and took all the change, which are like 3 notes of 2,000 IDR. That's 60c! The region was shut down during COVID and you can't leave 60c???!!!

bit different though - USA is a JOKE of a country that makes it everyone else's' problem to supplement worker wages with tips.

        • USA is a JOKE of a country that makes it everyone else's' problem to supplement worker wages with tips.

And this is different from high minimum wages how? The only difference is that one system puts the power in the hands of the person consuming the service, the other takes it away from them.

The question is about Bali though, not the USA.

Don't tip in Bali. Do tip in the USA.

      • You have to be fully vaccinated to travel to the US

And when making a bakers dozen, you need to remember to bake another bun.

        • misinformation alert!

you can never be "fully" vaccinated!!!

      Fucci

I don't believe this couple will wear fakes, knowing their culture - they'll likely be shamed.

      • +2

idk mate, fakes these days are getting REALLY good. I would say it really is to the point where you could definitely get away with it if you walk the walk and talk the talk.

        • ^ this, some reps I've seen could not pick the difference, I'm starting to buy based on receipts now.

    Hold hands together
    bow
    say: Namaste……

  • OK, i'll bite - according to you, how much should everyone tip?

  • +2

Is it the norm to tip there? If not then no

If you want to distribute the wealth because your buying power is so much higher than locals then go for it

  • How Much Do You Tip in Bali?

Won't be going ever again, so moot point…

  • Couple of dollars usually.

Many of these people work for around $1 per hour, just think about it - if they give you good service with the usual sweet smile make their day with a decent tip Don't be a TA.

As for the USA their tipping regime is more like extortion, but we do pay up ???????!!!

  • Its not really a fixed amount its more of a % or just leave the change as you said

"Economist" here. If you tip them, you are increasing their wages driving up inflation making them worse off.

  • "tourist couple wearing Gucci" - so many of the tourists are buying fake Gucci, Chanel, Louis Vuitton, etc. They are everywhere in the tourist areas

    • +1

I'd say people wearing real Gucci would go on more expensive holidays.

Why did you not leave a tip on their behalf?

  • +1

Just round it up to the nearest 20/50/100k. Also means you don't have to mess around with a pocket full of mangled small denomination notes and coins. If the service is very good, will add a bit more.

Just make sure if you give the tip that you're married.

Walking down the streets of Sydney, I see fake LV bags everywhere. In general, if you feel the locals have gone above and beyond to serve you, doesnt hurt to give 10k or 20k IDR. By you being at Bali, you are already doing your bit to support the local economy.

Tip for services of personal nature… personal driver, taxis, tour guide, massage, hair dresser, porter. Tipping amount based on how long the service is.

Eg, if you get a car with driver for the day. When you go to lunch, I give say 30k to the driver to buy a meal. At the end of the trip at least 50k tip. If you finish late for some reason (like 8pm), another 50k tip.

For a porter taking bags to your room. Probably 5k or 10k for a lot of bags.

Only if they give good service of course.

  • I tip in terms of "keep the change".

    e.g. gojek is 87,000, here's a 100,000. keep the change. - 13,000 is $1.30.

  • I tip however much it takes for the police to leave me alone.
