And never watch Dolby Vision again.

Samsung really need to stop being stubborn with that.

    Would be tempted otherwise.

Also seem to have read alot of bad quality control with these. Unsure if anything has improved. Not too dissimilar to when they entered the high end gaming monitor market.

    • +2

That is exactly whats putting me off buying one

      • +3

I only watched another YT review yesterday and it was flooded with comments from buyers who had repeat returns, like the G9 49' Monitor.

Many were also very concerned about the panels rigidity too.

    • never watch Dolby Vision again.

true, but… All major streamers now offer HDR10+.

      • +1

4k UHD list is far more DV leaning.

        • Be realistic, vast majority of UHD is streamed.

          • +14

@AlexF: Point? If I buy a top of the line TV, and pair it with a high end audio system, wouldn't I wanna take advantage of the system to its full capabilities?

If you want to watch streaming only that's fine, many people like more.

Seems silly to me to buy a top of the line model and use lesser sources all the time, or atleast limit yourself too.

            • +16

              @scuderiarmani: This guy gets it.

It's not about what's most popular. These are high end TVs. They should play the home cinema standard format (DV), no matter if you're going to use it or not.

It's also maddening that LG don't include HDR10+ and DTS audio passthrough on their premium OLEDs.

              • @BradH13: Geezuz I didnt know that re the LG's…
Was contemplating for boxing day sales

              • +2

@BradH13: Yeah, it's screwing the consumer. These should be standard features across the board.

Regardless, I wouldn't suggest buying any first gen TV product, they take time to iron out.

I notice as well almost all apps I need are on my LG TV's, but NBA isn't. So I'm forced to use a secondary device for it. My Sony TV's have the best support but I have all sorts of random bugs, probably Android and CEC related. Every brand has its problems.

              • +3

@BradH13: The S95B feedback and issues are shockingly bad. Over 50% have problems, along with bent screens. They nerfed the TV settings with updates, worse after each one, gaming has so many issues too. LG and Samsung not licensing DTS is awful. Wanting a 48/55 for PC and no DTS is a huge loss. Clarity and brightness is amazing on the Samsung better than regular OLED but thats were the pros stop. Nothing but cons after that. They really rushed it, nowhere near ready for release. How did Sony beat them with a fully finished product when they're using Samsungs panels?!

                • -1

@Whisper Quiet: If 50% of sales were being returned, it would be a global news headline. I'd suggest the fault rate is between 0.5-1%, like most products.

eARC will solve your audio needs, as you should not have been relying on the TVs DAC to get good quality audio.

Recent VRR and HDR gaming issues were a firmware implementation oversight, the updates were pulled once that was realised.

                  • +5

@jasswolf: I didnt say 50% were being returned genius. Look on the forums and see the many thousands complaining. The moderators of the owners threads have given up and returned their TVs. They were trying to help everyone else with the problems, now its in disarray. Bent screens are over 50%. Just depends on how badly they're bent. VRR flickers and HDR are still ongoing problems for gaming. Brightness and clarity problems too in gaming. Colour gamut is busted so you have to manually change it each time for different content. Inputs dont display the correct name or reset back to default. Ive got a shield and AV receiver with height channels with my main TV. I dont want to get another go between for my PC just to be able to hear DTS audio tracks. LG and Samsung cant pass through any DTS, not even with Earc. Why are you defending trash companies that cheap out to screw the customer

                    • -1

@Whisper Quiet: Sorry I misread your post and thought you were complaining about zero surround passthrough. Yeah they've all dropped DTS because the format wars are basically over on that front: Dolby won.

They're now going to be more concerned with Bluetooth LE Audio and WiSA.

                      • +2

@jasswolf: Sometimes its better to pay the Sony tax so you get everything included. Without the huge QC issues. Along with the best picture possible for all tech. Dolby won the streaming audio so far, but I dont even watch online content. Rather get the full download 4K rips or discs, I care about DTS-X, DTS HDMA, Dolby Atmos. Streaming has kind of killed the best picture and audio possible

                        • @Whisper Quiet: Well you're covered on the Atmos front, and that's DTS-X's competitor. These firmware issues are frustrating, but Samsung have acknowledged them and are working on a fix.

$1000+ premium for the extra formats, the better image processing, and AndroidTV just isn't worth it IMO.

                          • @jasswolf: Samsung might be working on a fix but every update has either made things worse or added new problems lol. I guess youre set on getting this TV but chances are youre going to have problems of some sort with it. If i was you I'd wait for the Sony to drop or wait til next years release, since it actually works the way its supposed to. If youre aware of so many of the issues, seems strange that you still want it. Yes its superior tech but you're better off waiting. Sorry probably should have said my best mate has the S95B and is going through so many problems with it.

                            • @Whisper Quiet: Most of the early firmware updates genuinely fixed things, and the colour space issue you pointed out earlier has been in there since release. I'd imagine we'll see a fix before the end of the year.

From my perspective it's simple: if it's worked previously, it will work again.

                      • @jasswolf: In what world did that happen in? Not this one.

A fair few 4K BluRays (most notably legacy reissues) don't come with a Dolby TrueHD/Atmos track at all here in 2022, and only include DTS-HD MA or DTS:X for lossless/spatial.

                        • -1

@BradH13: Honestly, take it up with Spielberg and his cronies… too often it's directors getting their pockets lined that keep format wars alive.

Going forward we'll probably see more open standards, eg. HDR10+ & AV1.

                          • @jasswolf: Nah fam. I'm taking up with the TV manufacturers. As most should.

DTS licensing is even supposed to be cheap, so it's literally just a 'fk you' to consumers.

                            • @BradH13: No, it's a middle finger to DTS and the odd bluray owner who has a system that can genuinely take advantage of the spatial complexity of these formats, who are in an extreme minority as of today. Now is the time to make moves like these, especially when Opus can be an open-source fallback in the future.

If DTS licencing was competitive or relevant, it'd be in every relevant device.

                    • @Whisper Quiet: So you’re telling me this is a must buy

                • @Whisper Quiet:

LG and Samsung not licensing DTS is awful. Wanting a 48/55 for PC and no DTS is a huge loss

Yeah, no DTS from optical out :(

            • @scuderiarmani: Well that is one way of looking at it, the other way would be why would you look at buying a lesser TV for a format that is barely used in comparison.

Most of the content people watch is SDR or the much more widely used HDR10. Better off to buy the TV that looks better for 95% of the content you watch in my opinion. Not saying that it shouldn't have DV, just that it shouldn't be a reason not to pick this up

              • @cille745: Sony and LG make lesser TV's?

I'd say all 3 have benefits. Just one is missing DV, and with a big 4K Blu-ray library, that's a deal breaker.

                • @scuderiarmani: The Samsung QD-OLED’s are objectively better almost across the board in image quality

                  • @cille745: I can show you many who would take the Sony, pricing was the only issue Samsung had it over it.

And likewise, bang for back LG C2 was recommended by many over both.

    • I’m out of the loop. What’s the problem with Dolby vision?

      • +8

It doesn't have it. It's the best of the HDR Formats. Samsung doesn't have it. Just seems a silly thing these days.

        • +1

Is it because Dolby Vision licence more expensive to Samsung?

        • +2

It's also one of the most poorly executed HDR formats. The film industry loves to tell people they're using it, but most people doing HDR mastering are hopeless at it.

You'd be surprised how often you actually want to be using Dolby Vision, particularly if you're not being careful with your bluray selection.

        • -2

I find Dolby vision to look quite dim and dull on my LG C2 when streaming sports

          • @GoatWade: What sport streams in Dolby Vision? You’re not forcing Dolby Vision for all content on the device (e.g. Apple TV) are you?

            • @Randolph Duke: Watching NBA on google chromecast because LG native apps don’t have it. By default it’s set to Dolby vision. I got into the settings and changed to Normal HDR, looked a lot better to me watching basketball.

        • It's the best of the HDR Formats.

and this is what rtings says "Between Dolby Vision and HDR10+, there's no clear winner from a technical standpoint because they both use dynamic metadata to help improve the overall quality."

      • +6

        Doesn't work like that….

      • +1

supports Dolby Vision, should work fine.

Need the TV to support it, otherwise will only play as normal HDR.

  • +2

$100 better than Black Friday + 15% off from Samsung. Grr.

    • Yeah this sucks

      • At least it was free shipping from Samsung, but not $100 worth

  • +1

one thing I learnt from Samsung is don't buy their cheap stuff….. pathetic quality control and hopeless customer service…. they would even repair your TV with a second tier panel…..

  • Oh no, bought the 55 inch from Samsung for $1954….

    • +3

I also payed this for the 55" on Black Friday but if you signed up for Samsung rewards, there was a 10% "cashback" on Samsung rewards points during BF.

So it ended up being a better deal than this.

      • Good to know, I did get the estimated earned points but not available to use yet. Technically JBHIFI can use 10-15% off gift card to checkout, but with Samsung bonus points it will be close enough.

      • Ah yes. Totally forgot about this. For some reason when trying to check my rewards in their store, I get an error.

  • +2

What an amazing deal. Spewing I paid $1000 more for the 65 inch. Unreal.

  • +1

Crazy to think I bought the 65" for $3295 on Black Friday as I couldn't justify paying an extra $1000 or so for the Sony A95k just for Dolby Vision. Still stoked about my choice upgrading from a budget 4k kogan TV haha

  • +4

First time I’m regretting paying $2700 delivered for LG G2 at the end of June. Unreal prices for these qd oleds.

    • Do you think this is better? (Genuine question here)

      • +1

Do I believe the picture is better? No… is it a better deal? Yes… is there an issue if it doesn’t have Dolby. Vision? I don’t think so… for a $1000 less it is a no brainer. Paired with a q930b soundbar setup from Samsung this is simply a knockout.

        • +1

According to HDTV test, the picture is better

        • +1

Picture is better 90% of the time. Problem is Samsung have the worst quality control and the TV is plagued with issues. They know it and thats why theyre trying to sell it on the cheap. So many settings are broken.

  • Can anyone answer if these are OK for a bright open plan living room? I have a QLED 55" that has to be replaced due to damage. Was planning on another QLED but tempted by the perceived value of this…

    • +1

From my experience owning one, subjectively it gets as bright as a QLED and has a polarising layer. However the blacks don't become perfect blacks, so YMMV if you think you would be bothered by it. I personally am ambivalent to it

    • OLED is not ideal for a brightly lit room, get Samsung Mini LED instead.

  • +4

QD-LED or OLED? Better brightness and picture quality?
Sound is not much concern as I will be using in-ceiling speakers.

    • +7

These are great prices, but normally I'd suggest LG C2 over anything right now.

      • +6

Thanks mate. God Bless whoever negged me :)

        • So many strange people on this site

      • Would you mind explaining why that's the case? This is genuine, as I've only ever had a shitty $400 Kogan TV and I would like to buy a new one that doesn't break the bank - I'm not really a connoisseur when it comes to movies or anything, just sometimes I would watch F1 in 1080p.
Just saw this deal and the LG C2 at JB, but honestly as noob I cannot tell.

        • +1

If you aren't super interested in the tech, I'd just suggest you go in store regardless and just pick out one you like.

If you can, ask em nicely to stream F1 to it, maybe they can help.

LG C2 is very popular though. Sony models are good for motion too.

          • @scuderiarmani: Haha yeah I did, and couldn't tell instore. My wife was looking at a $900 Hisense TV and said it looked "clearer" than the C2 and Samsung, but I'm sure it has more deficiencies that I can't tell.

            • @infringement payer: Hey, if it looks better to you, no point worrying.

Though often they can have different picture presets used that may help or appeal to you.

Outta the box they all look different.

  • +1

I've had the 55" for 14 days and it's quite a jump from my Samsung Q80T.

    I've got it running at 4K 144hz.

I've used it for PC and console gaming. Nothing but praise for this product from me.

    • Hi, I've really been thinking of buying this to replace my Panasonic 50" ST60 Plasma, but am worried about the build quality. I was going to buy it Black Friday deals, but this is an even better deal.

Anyway, how are you finding the build quality? Is the panel really delicate? Any signs of bending on yours?

      • I was quite scared when I was wall mounting it because I was doing it alone. It's quite heavy and extremely thin. I had also read that it can bend. Luckily even though I was quite rough with it, nothing happened. No bend. Once I mounted it, I never worried about the build quality again. It's gonna stay there for years.

        • Wow, I thought mounting it yourself wouldn't be possible. I thought you'd need a second person at least. Pretty good effort mate. How were you able to hold it up? Also, where are you supposed to lift it so you don't risk damaging the panel? Put your hands on the bottom of the TV?

          • @Ice009: It was a nerve wrecking experience I wouldn't recommend tbh. I lifted from the bottom and the side. I already had the mount ready so it was only a matter of lifting and sliding into the mount. I have a big mirror on the side which made everything easier by giving me better vision of the back of the tv.

            • @PabloVicioso: Glad it went well for you. That sounds pretty nerve wrecking indeed. I don't think I'd be able to do it, so props for actually being able to do it. Thanks for the advice on how to lift it. I think I'm going to try for the 55" if the price is similar during Christmas sales.

How are you finding the TV overall? What TV are you coming from?

  • Really wanna see one in person and evaluate those triangle pixels for games and movies.

Love the rumoured burn in reduction though

    • If you're not using it with a PC for text, it's fine.

      • That's the thing though, I'm picky and I'm a gamer. Nowadays text is on a display a lot more than 20 years ago.

Chromecast menu, TV menus, Apple TV menus, Youtube videos you're watching with text embedded. We use subtitles all the time and of course games, some of which are bad at choosing fonts.

Plus, I want to wait for 83" QD-OLED, which means bigger pixels and more potential likelyhood of seeing the triangle issues.

Hoping it's fine tho, that burn in reduction is the real deal

        • We have one here for work that we have been testing as a grading monitor. Short answer, the triangle arrangement is no issue unless you are using it as your computer desktop with no scaling at the native resolution and sit quite close. For games and menus with text, there is really no issue, or for videos with embedded text. It is really only small text on Windows or MacOs with a higher contrast between the background and text where you can see the fringing, and then only if you are up close. Bad for a desktop monitor, no issue for a gaming/movie watching TV.

    • So I was looking at LCD TVs (Sony X90K & TCL C835), but had the Samsung S95B, Sony A80J and LG CS higher on my list. The possibility of burn-in is what stopped me from getting the A80J or LG CS as there won't be much varied content watched on the TV. It'll be mostly sports watching with only 30% movies/tv shows. For these prices, though, I was willing to give the S95B a go and take the risk. I just didn't get the order in, in time as I finished work late the day of the sale. So QD OLED is definitely less susceptible to burn-in than regular OLEDs?

  • +2

Tempting, but I'll be holding out for another drop in price more akin to the value of this deal.

  • +3

Picked up a 55" on Black Friday for just over 2k at The Good Guys. I know about the Samsung deal for 1950 but I actually used the code on a 65" QLED before changing my mind but I couldn't get the code back. I was fine paying what I did being able to pick up the TV same day.

TV I got had some minor scratch damage so I got a replacement, which I sorta regret now because the second one has a slight bend, leans backwards, and the chassis(?) is warped so it's on an angle. I went back to Good Guys to get it swapped again but the manager wasn't in and the person behind the desk seemingly didn't put it through properly, so I have to go back again.

What I'm saying is, the build quality/consistency of these things is terrible. Yet, the panel looks really, really good.

    • +1

Yeah read many comments like this. Quality Control is terrible. Just hope JB has stock incase you need to switch.

More reason to skip 1st gen products too.

      • LG C2 is the same price as what I paid atm so they might just let me straight swap if there are no S95Bs left.

  • +3

As a current owner, I notice the later firmware, especially the 1403 had serious problem with HDR VRR game mode, and dimmer than earlier version. 1420 seems to improve the VRR but still not as bright as 1211-1310. If you got your new TV with 1211-13xx, don't update the firmware! I read in forum that the TV may even update itself with auto update disabled. You may want to setup ip block rules in the router if you still need internet connection for built-in streaming apps.

    • Yeah, this was another comment all over YT Review I saw, don't update due to brightness.

      Bizarre.

    • Any idea what ips to block?

    • Yep typical Samsung behaviour. My older samsung TV even with auto updates set to off and everything disabled to “dumb” it down, still allows Samsung to push updates and resets settings when it does. I vowed years ago to never buy Samsung again after reading forums and seeing their quality issues, poor firmware and total disregard for peoples privacy. Remember their TV spying fiascos a few years back, they got caught a few times. No morals at all.

  • 65" is a great tv.

I was worried about OLED brightness, but this thing is almost too bright at night.

Very slender, and a worry when mounting.

One negative I seem to notice, but not sure if im seeing things is a sharp change in brightness at random times.

    • +3

That would be the ABL and APBL kicking in. It drops brightness if the whole screen or a big percentage is a lighter colour or white. Can also happen with a static picture on the screen for a while. Even if theres a logo on the screen it can effect the overall brightness. For burn in prevention which can be an annoying feature with all OLEDs.

      • It sure is an annoying feature, although my wife doesn't seem to notice it.

I couldn't find any info on a shallow google search and wondered if maybe I was imagining it, so thanks!

        • If you lower the brightness or colour calibrate it, the effect shouldn’t be as strong. Hopefully they add a heatsink to next years model to reduce it

  • +3

The 65-in seems a very tempting deal. At a great price. No one has any crystal balls I know but I had my heart set on the LG C2 65. I wonder will this be on sale for a similar price in the boxing Day sales?.

  • Purchased from Samsung corporate store for free delivery and setup ,

  • How heavy are these compared to LG panels? I ordered my first LG a few years ago online but didn't realise how heavy it was and it was ridiculously hard to get upstairs on my own. I'm guessing these are probably in a similar ball park but thought there was a chance they might be lighter. I want to move an OLED tv as well, but they're all glass and seem to be very delicate, so it is putting me off doing it.

    • In the link under the details

Product Weight without Stand (kg) 21.5

      • On review, the box is 27.5kg I think. Also a bit frustrating to get up the stairs for 1 person without knocking it about…

        • I wouldn't be taking any decent size TV upstairs by myself. Not worth the risk. Ask a neighbour.

  • +1

Looks like Samsung have their price down to $1999 for 55" and $2999 for 65".
Extra 15% off Samsung Loyalty code would bring it down to $1700 and $2550

    • +1

How do I get a Samsung loyalty code

      • Either give them a call or ask nicely in their live chat.

      • give customer service a call and request one.

    • Thanks for the tip mate, got the loyalty code by submitting a pic of my old TV!
