    • The bottom line is it can brew excellent quality espresso and steam milk properly to make a top quality at home coffee.

Yes, there are slightly cheaper at home machines and much more expensive pro-level machines but this hits the sweet spot.

    • If you really want to, you can get a refund on your ggc order and order this one again.

  • Great machine. Also, for those who want a bottomless (naked) portafilter to go with this. Breville now have them in stock for $99. When I first got mine, it was extremely difficult to find a decent bottomless portafilter which would fit the machine. Amazon have some, but the quality is not very good (feels and sounds like hollow metal).

  • anyone got the store cash yet? does it kick in when you pick it up? how long does it take to pop up on your phone?

    • T&C's state it pays store cash on the 2nd and 4th Thursday of each month to the next payment date should be the 22nd December

      • then it's valid for 1 month? that seems so complicated. i'm away for 3 weeks 22/12 onwards

        • Nah only valid for 10 days from receipt. Not the best conditions

    • Good Guys Commercial is excluded from store cash eligibility for those who might have been wondering.

  • Worth grabbing this to replace a modified Gaggia Classic? At $800 it seems like a steal and I'm sort of over tinkering with the Gaggia

    • +1

Gaggia is not a dual boiler?

      • +1

        not a dual boiler
had a look at one at coscto and it really looked flimsy but nevertheless it's very popular and you can get the gaggica for $650ish if you keep looking

        • +1

Correct. The Gaggia is flimsy trash and I have no idea why people keep recommending it.

      • Unfortunately not. I've probably spent close to the value of the machine on upgrades to get it to a great point as it just isn't very good stock from factory.

Read the reviews, the BDB is popular for a reason and the going price at the moment is pretty good.

  • good price

  • which Grinder is recommended?
    thanks

Yes but the deal is expired :(

  • This machine is so much better compared to express, I wish I bought it 3 years ago.

But I have smart grinder and im down to finest setting no.1 using about 19 grams and 50grams out.

Should be about 36ish out no?

    Using Aldi beans.

    • +1

You can very easily adjust the burrs to get a much finer grind if you think that will help. There'll be a youtube video on it somewhere. Also I used to use 21g in the double basket, so maybe 19 is under-dosing slightly.

    • Take out the burrs and there will be another grind setting on it. I watched youtube to show me how to take it out. Mine is set at 2. The setting on the screen is at 10.
I'm also using Aldi beans at the moment and doing turbo shots, 18g for 54g out, holding the manual button for 14 sec but the pressure bar only reaches 3 when it should be 6-7. Still "experimenting" :)

      • So you put 18gm IN and 54ml OUT (3:1 ratio) in 14sec? As you are holding the manual button, its on the pre infusion pressure of 3bar.
I would say there is something not right at all with your setup.
You need to increase the dose to say 20gm and try again, then if still too fast then grind finer as well and pay attention to tamping and levelling so don't have channelling.

        • Thanks for the tips. I did 20g today and bar went up to 4. Might have to go finer.

          • @BellaWii: Good, perhaps go to 21gm and try again then another cup with a notch finer to get 7/8 bar. But importantly make sure no channelling and tamp hard & level as channelling can cause coffee to flow fast and have no enough pressure.

      Depends what you are making.
      50/19 is a Lungo.
You want to keep it between 1.5-2.5x for an espresso.
Without knowing how long it takes to get 50g out, try aim for 2x in 30 sec including PI time. Then adjust based on taste. If you make milk drinks then any errors would be more forgiving.

      • Don’t know what I’m making. All I know is that it used to be sour now it’s bitter so want to get to that middle ground. I used to be fussed about times and output but now just focused on getting a taste I like. I can see it’s coming out too fast. But making it finer seems to make it sour, so that’s my problem.

        • +2

          Too sour (under extracted)
          - too coarse
          - too fast
          - too little dose
          - too little out

          Too bitter (over extracted)
          - too fine
          - too slow
          - too much does
          - too much out

Each bean will have a different receipe and I didn't even include the temperature variables haha. If you're buying beans from a good roaster, it may help to see what the reccomended recipe is. My favourite beans call for a 1:2.6 whereas most people work on 1:1.5 or 1:2.

The issue I think with a lot of people is the multiple variables that can change when making a shot. Are you tamping with the same force each time, are you clearing old grounds from your grinder before you grind the first one for the day, are you heating up your portafilter before your first brew. These are all variables that can change the shot even without adjusting anything.

This has resulted in me getting over the top equipment such as a calibrated tamper, an accurate 0.1g scale, a dosing funnel and a wdt. The biggest benefit was changing the grinder for me from the Breville SGP to a Eureka. But I can say my shots are all consistent now and new bags or different beans only take 2-3 shots before I find the right grind setting.

When I had the SGP, it could take me 8+ shots before I found the right setting 😅

@EnergicAU: ^Listen to this man/woman. You can also consider the temp. 93-95C as a general guide. But this is dependent on the beans you use.
            Source: Barista 15 years ago.

          • @EnergicAU: Appreciate this. I'm using a 0.1g scale, dosing funnel, distributor, WDT and Normcore level tamper on a bottomless portafilter. And the BDB is set at 93C. I've been thinking that the issue is the smart pro grinder which you have confirmed so an upgrade is planned for next year.

Out of curiosity, for those with a BDB, do you backflush after every session? I put the rubber cleaning disc on a single cup pressurise basket and hold the double cup button for 5-6 secs three times to backflush before turning the machine off.

            • @BellaWii: I normally just do an empty shot to rinse both the shower screen and the porta before I turn off the machine and give the shower screen a wipe down.

Now i have two handles (bottomless and dual spout) one will be used to backflush but tbh even then I hardly do it.. probably good practise.

Funny you mention those stuff, I literally upgraded to the normcore leveller, normcore tamper and normcore puckscreen recently
This last item keeps the screen pretty clean now…

Unless your bdb has issues, I think a new grinder will solve your issues. Tbh the grinder is more important than the machine.

              • +1

@EnergicAU: Every posting of a deal on a pro consumer or higher coffee machine should be accompanied with a warning, "the grinder is more important than the machine" :)

            • +1

@BellaWii: backflush is good practice, particularly if you do not use a puck screen.

              • +1

@blues99: I'll probably get a puck screen to try. I'm reading that it increases shot time by about 10% and is an alternative to a finer grind.
