  • Zacapa was my first decent rum. Having tried it recently after many years of being on better things, Zacapa is bland as water.

    • +2

Can I please ask - what better things? (always on the search for a good rum)

      • I've been into the dictador 12 solera (now oos) and diplomatico 1 and 2 (2 is better).

Next bottle will be a very simple Mount Gaye for mixing with coke and lime. Then I'll need to find something new. I'm thinking dictador 20.

        • Was hoping for something more exciting!

I'm a fan of dictador solera - that's my sorta regular now.

A little while ago I bought this - not too exy (compared to many others not exy at all) and discounted now too. Unassuming bottle, tacky thin cardboard box, the cork broke as I was pulling it out the first time and when I tried to get the rest out with a corkscrew it fell in the bottle - a tragic start, was not expecting much - but hey, it was fantastic, one of my faves to date.

          • @afoveht: You'll need to change.. The dictador seems OOS everywhere, i presumed they aren't doing it anymore?

            The diplomatico 1 & 2 are limited releases of 5000 bottles each…

        • I read somewhere they add a bit of molasses to the diplamatico after distillation …. It's what makes it yummy and liqueur like ……

        • I’m also a fan of zacapa but I also rate diplomatico over it now

        • Dictador 20yo is the smoothest rum you will ever drink, but it costs a lot of money.

I recently tried it at a rum festival and it is now my new "special occasion" rum.

Xmas is a special occasion ;)

        • @justtoreply Is it not this one?

          https://www.ebay.com.au/itm/283876482542

      • Havana Club 15

  • Blimey aged rum/scotch is (comparably) cheap. Why can't they get bourbon down to this price?!

  • +3

Glenmo Signet has always been around $200-250 for about a decade and is quite nice and interesting because of the chocolate malt. It's also bottled at 46% which is always preferable because it's NCF. I bought a bottle earlier this year and the quality hasn't noticeably dropped since I first tried it 10 years ago.

Aberlour A'bunadh is a great high ABV sherry bomb, but I prefer Glenfarclas 105. You can get a 1L bottle for $130 here: https://www.nicks.com.au/products/glenfarclas-105-cask-stren…

Glenfarclas 15 is an exceptional sherried malt bottled at 46% ("smoother" for people who don't like CS or high ABV, but still NCF) and is $125 here: https://www.nicks.com.au/products/glenfarclas-15-year-old-si…

Mac 12 sherry is not bad. I personally prefer the Glenfiddich 15. Both are 40% and chill filtered, but are "smooth" I guess.

All the other Macallan double, triple, special, rare casks are not good. The only Mac worth buying is the 18 Sherry. They are known for their sherry matured whisky but getting good sherry casks from Spain is getting increasingly competitve, so they release all these cask combos and try to sell NAS shit in fancy packaging for $500. The also dropped the distillation date on the 18 Sherry a few years ago. Macallan can make incredible sherried whisky, but unfortunately they only have one expression worth buying which is overpriced and very hard to get hold of.

So what I'm saying is if you want your sherry fix, buy Glenfarclas 15 or 105.

Just when I thought I've already bought enough whisky till Christmas.

      Thanks for the recommendations!

      • np, if you want more recs, tell me your preferances

        • Probably gonna regret this (at least my wallet will!)

          My usual suspects are:
          Lagavulin 16
          Talisker 10
          Laphroaig quarter cask
          Arberlour abudnah
          Makers mark 46

          • +8

            @marantz: That's a solid rotation.

Laga 16 - Kilchoman Loch Gorm (only one of a handful of distilleries that do farm to bottle), their whiskies are young but have plenty of character. Bunnahabhain 12 is quite different with very light peat and a more earthy character (think mushrooms and umami), in addition to the usual sherry characteristics. Or even the Laga 8; I personally prefer the 8, but the 12 is the best Lagavulin imo.

Talisker 10 - Caol Ila 12 is quite siimilar, well made and consistant. Highland Park 12 is solid, but let down but the low ABV. I would recommend Bruichladdich 10 but they got rid of it, but Port Charlotte 10 is still around and is something different; all mordern Bruichladdichs have an oily/buttery character they you'll love or hate. I'd go with Ledaig 10 from the isle of Mull, or its unpeated sibling, Tobermory 15 which is fantastic.

Laph QC - Ardbeg Uigeadail is around the same peat level, higher ABV, but you won't notice it because it's so nice and balanced. My favourite easy-to-get Ardbeg. Corryvreckan is also great. However, Campbeltown's Springbank/Longrow/Hazelburn are criminally underrated. Springbank 12 CS is moderately peated, and has a sort of "farmy" character, which isn't for everyone, but is one of my favourites. If you want heavier peat go for Longrow 10, or one of their many wine finished bottlings. Springbank is 2.5 distilled and moderately peated, Longrow the usual double distilled and heavy peat, Hazelburn is triple distilled and unpeated. All three are fantastic and creative with the use of many different types wine barrels.

            A'Bunadh - Glenfarclas 15 or 105

Maker's 46 is a weird one becasue of their use of staves. Wild Tuirkey 101 is my go-to cheap bourbon, Rare Breed is great but not worth the premium over the 101. Booker's is great. High West do some interesting things with cask finishing. Blanton's Gold/Straight friom the Barrel are very good and you get a horse on the cork. If you like rye, Sazerac is okay, but Rittenhouse 100 is great.

Sorry, took a bit longer than expected because cooking and racking my brain and typing at the same time.

Edit: forgot a few of bourbons: Four Roses Single Barrel, Noah's Mill and Elijah Craig Small batch

            • @rosebank: Thanks for the detailed and thoughtful reply. Definitely worth the wait. I've saved it in my email for my future purchases :)

You've mentioned some that are already my favourites like laga 8, highland 12, port charlotte, ledaig,

              Very much appreciated!

    • Im a big fan of Glendronach, their 18yr is amazing

      • I've tried 12-21 and I'd still pick Glenfarclas 15 over any of them. I own a lot of their single casks but even then it's very hit or miss (and getting stupidly expensive); the worst sherry matured whisky I've ever owned is a 'dronach 23yo PX Puncheon. That's why I'd never recommend Glendronach, even though I enjoy some of their younger Oloroso casks.

        • Wow I am the complete opposite and find Glenfarclas rather lack luster (we all have different palates). I was at a tasting the other day with the whisky club, so I do agree the 15 is nice. Yes Glendronach is getting expensive, but I have quite a few of the older bottlings from Billy Walker and prefer this to the newer offerings from Rachel Barrie. Macallan's NAS is just bollocks in pretty labels at a huge, inflated pric.
The GlenAllachie is a good sherry fix, but if you want to try something a bit different, I bought a 'Firkin Whisky Co. 2010 Linkwood PX & Sherry Cask 12 Year Old Cask Strength Single Cask from the Whisky List. This was fantastic, although a bit pricey

          • +2

@tnarg: Not a huge fan of Glenallachie. I am familiar with Firkin, I bought the inaugaral release which was an undisclosed 10 yo madeira cask iirc, I've known Graham Wright (Odd Whisky Coy) for over a decade and used to drink with him at his old warehouse quite frequently.

IBs have always been expensive gambles especially single casks, but once you find bottlers you've enjoyed and the number of duds are reasonably low, I have no issue rolling the dice on a distillery I like. Cadenhead Old Pulteney single cask 22yo for $400, sure, why not? Adelphi Clynelish 18 for $400? Okay. Heartwood Sullivans Cove port cask? I'll take 3. I think roughly half of my bottles are indies.

I've reached the point of whisk(e)y zen; no more fomo, checking online stores everyday, hunting down BTACs, chasing fads, reading blogs etc. I'm not up to date with whisky news, rarely go to tastings, don't read reviews, no socials and stopped taking notes. I have enough whisk(e)y from all around the world to last me a very very very long time, but it took me over 15 years to get to this point.

I haven't bought whisky for a few years now, but I'll still buy a few bottles a year if they're really interesting. I didn't even know Rachel Barry left Bowmore. So all my Glendronach and Benriach single casks are Billy Walker.

My next whisky purchase will probably be a young ex-bourbon from a new distillery, who have tight cuts for a clean distillate you can't hide behind sherry or peat.

This is a much longer reply than I planned, but I rarely talk whisky anymore. I have friends who are reasonably knowledgable, but don't dig into the nitty gritty.

            • @rosebank: Thank you for reply, I have taken a couple of notes and will continue on my journey. Off to Scotland in May for my first trip

  • The Chairman’s Reserve 1931 has to be my favourite Rum but a bit pricey for everyday drinking at around $400

    https://www.danmurphys.com.au/product/DM_ER_1000002959_CHAR1…

  • Here are my top 5 rums for those that are interested:

    1. Ronny Z
    2. Diplo RE
    3. Dictador 20yo
    4. Bundy Small Batch (Vintage Barrel)
    5. Angostora 1919
    • I find the DiploRE too sweet but have always been curious about the Bundy. How do they compare?

      • +1

You will like the Bundy better then. It's a little sweet but still has the Bundy bite (not like the OG Bundy).

  • +1

Bit dodge that boozebud list the Zacapa as 23 year old! Even Zacapa dont have those words on their label any more!
