  • Cheers! Just about to run out of Sumutra. Ordered some Enterprise and Pegasus this time round 👍

    • Thanks so much SueyJitsu! - Great combo!

  • I guess it's time to try this again, they were a bit disappointing last time, what's everyone favourite blend?

    • Hey there Jofzar - which blend did you try and how can we find a better one for you?

      Cheers
      Dan

    • Colombia and the Decaf, have tried a few. Typically prefer more mellow less bitter/roastey (if you like that, I've heard thunderchild is great)

  • Seems even better than the last offer
But wondering will the bean got stale (if I order 2kg) given I just drink 1 cup a day? (2 shots)
A 1kg bag can takes around 1.5months for me to consume

    • +4

Hey littlesoldier - if you look after the beans by keeping them cool, away from light and dry, they should be fine for 4 to 6 weeks.
They might not be as super duper as 2 weeks but will still be delicious.

Maybe your fellow OzB team mates can also advise.

      I hope that helps.

      Cheers
      Dan

      • Thanks Dan
Able to share with a friend so bought 2 x 1kg Enterprise

        • Great idea littlesoldier - thanks so much!

    • +1

could you not freeze and take out what you need as you go?

      • I thought freezing wrecks many things, this included. Something to do with the oils?

      • +1

You can vacuum seal and freeze if you have one of those. I do it and you don't lose any freshness.

    • General consensus is if you have more than you can drink in a few weeks to vacc seal and freeze. Defrost the day before. Cool dry cupboard best for short term, freezer for longer term, fridge never. Youtube search for freezing coffee

    • Find an airtight container, and keep the 1kg unopened bag inside, and chuck into the freezer.

Don't unfreeze it, until you want to consume this second bag. To unfreeze, take it out of the freezer the night before, but don't open the container. Let it thaw without coming into contact with outside air (which will cause condensation). Ideally, keep in in a dry, cool place to thaw over night, or even longer, if the weather is cold.

      Once unfrozen, don't refreeze.

Alternatively, use a vacuum bag sealer, and portion it out into 250g bags to freeze.

There's a great video by James Hoffmann about it: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5uT5_IWWb00

    Hi, My name is Phil.
I'm brand-new to coffee, so I don't want too much.
Can you take half of the regular version of coffee, and mix it with half of the decaffeinated version of the coffee?
Or is that just too weird o' thing to ask for?

    • +3

Sure you can buy 1kg decaf beans and 1kg normal beans and then you can mix as you wish yourself!

    • Real coffee fans would know a Kicking & Screaming quote, when they saw one.

  • +2

    So that is 35% off?

    • +7

      Up to 35% off.

      • +2

Also have to buy multiple rather than one bag as per previous deals, meaning freshness suffers which is a big reason to buy this in the first place. Personally I'd wait for either the flat 30% or 40% which has been standard weekly offer for months.

        • Freeze the bag you don't use. Maintains freshness once thawed. Don't grind frozen beans ;)

          • +2

@Walleee-y: How’d ya get the beans above the frank?

          • +1

@Walleee-y: Or just wait for regular 30% off.

Once you freeze, you have to deal with a whole heap of hassle to repackage into small portions, and remember to take some out the night before.

All that to save extra $2 (per bag) over 2 to 3 months.

            • @browser: Beans take all of 10 minutes to defrost. When beans are running low in grinder, put a few days worth in and good to go. No need to repackage into smaller portions.

              $2 savings/bag = Winning

              • @Walleee-y: That wasted time could’ve been spent with loved ones, or earning real money. $2 saving once every few months, c’mon man.

  • Best option for the standard latte?

    • -1

Sumatra is a good all rounder. When I buy Airjo beans, it's what I go for. Makes great lattes/caps on our (OzB favourite) Breville BES870.

    • It's subjective. For me, Twilight.

      • +1 Twilight its good stuff

  • How long can we expect a bag to last unopened? I like coffee, but worried it'll go stale before I get to the second bag (especially as I have a bag here unopened already). Going for espresso grind if it matters.

    • +1
      • Ah, yeah, must've missed it. Thanks.

Reckon I'll hold out on this round then and grab some in the next sale.

        • +2

The 40% off deal comes around regularly enough, odds on they'll have on in the new year. Enjoy.

          • @The Judge: 40% is only Sumatra.

Other blends are 30% when on sale.

      • Wasnt that comment about opened bag? Will an unopened bag also have that much of a deadline?

  • best bean for cappuccinos?

  • +3

40% off sounds like a better deal but I'm no Isaac Apples

  • I’m looking for something bitter and high on caffein. What do you recommend?

    • +1

      Vietnamese coffee … black

  • anyone wants to buy the non-70% off from me? anyone? no?

    • jokes aside though, good way to get people try new blends they haven't tried yet. Can order a 500g packs to hedge the risk. Sure it'll work out to be slightly expensive but you get to try more types and pick your favourite rather than basing it off others' reviews.

  • I placed an order and accidentally did not ask for grind level. How can I make sure my order is correct grind level? Literally 1 minute ago

Just to clarify SickDmith - it doesn't have to be identical bags - can be any 2 bags so you can mix it up and try new blends.

      Cheers
      Dan

      • +4

        Yeah SickDmith!

      • +1

He is referring to 35% off only available if you buy two items the same price.

If I were to say buy:

        • 1 x Enterprise $28.70 (500g)
        • 1 x Sumatra $36.30 (500g)
          Total (before discount) = $65

        I would get 70% off the Enterprise = $8.61

        Total (after discount): $8.61+$36.30 = $44.91

        ($65-$44.91)/$65 x 100 = 30.9% discount on order.

        • +1

I would argue this is not a deal at all given they run regular deals (weekly or fortnightly).

Max 35% and you have to buy two 1kg bags or pay a higher price for two smaller 500g bags, effectively leaving you either having more beams than you can use or paying a price close to the normal price for 1kg of beams, seemingly clever play but not really if you care to do a calculation.

Take SUMATRA BLEND as an example: to get 1 kg you can:
1, Buy 1 bag of 1kg bag for a normal price of $55.9 ($44.72 if you subscribe)
2, Buy 2 bags of 500g for a total price of $47.19 (effectively 15.6% off - normal price). This is more than what you would pay if you subscribe.

It's only worth it if you buy at least 2kg of beams, but again not a necessary move as they run regular deals

      • it doesn't have to be identical bags

Two identical bags maximises the discount.

        @HomebrewFC is correct.

    • +1

      Can you please tabulate it?

Would be good to include another column: days since last identical deal.

      • @neil, would be fantastic to have this as a feature for all rep related deals.

        • +1

Interesting idea… Automatically list all previous deals for the last few months under each new deal.

          • +1

@SickDmith: Isn't that just the 'related stores' link located just above the comments section of this page? 🤔

  • Any tips on Barista express grind settings for Sumatra? I've got my machine on 3 bur 2 grind, still slowing through too fast…

    • What does this mean? 3 bur 2 grind, still slowing through too fast

      • +1

Sorry I made a typo, it's *flowing through too fast :) at bur 3 grind 2

        • +1

Sorry but bur 3 grind 2 does not mean much as every machine is calibrated different.
Your does in the double shot single wall basket, should be 18gm well levelled and compacted and checked with the supplied Razor Dose Trimming Tool. You should grind finer to achieve 2:1 ratio in 30sec

          • +1

@huntabargain: I'm using 19g and it's pretty tighly compacted even lower than the supplied razer

            • @Rick James18: either grind more into it or/and grind finer. CHANGE ONE VARIABLE AT A TIME

    • +2

Too fast means your grinds are too coarse. Grind finer. As a ballpark try doubling your dose weight in 30 seconds including the pre infusion time.

  • Cheers, what would be an ideal setting for thunderchild in a Breville pro grinder and dual boiler if I’m making lattes?

    • Hey there Fotato - the best approach is to run with a recipe that has worked for you in the past and then make changes accordingly.
We can certainly help with feedback on what your shots are doing once you have tried. You can email me directly any time when you are dialling or for anything else at [email protected]

      I hope that helps
      Cheers

  • Got 2 bags of decaf. Best I've tasted. Thanks Airjo!

  • Trying a Stargazer (medium/dark) and Timor (dark) blend to crank through my Moka pot! Looking forward to receiving them.

  • Hey Dan,
I already have a subscription for Enterprise Blend but am looking to mix things up a little.
What blends would you recommend with milk for a standard flat white ? I prefer my coffee on the stronger side.

I've tried a few different roasters but keep coming back to you guys.
Keep up the great work !!!

  • go it :D got 2 twilights works out to be 18 bucks each delivered with the bundle deal for 2 500g bags whole beans :D

  • I tried this recently. Didn't seem any better than Aldi beans. I'm also skeptical about how recently they were roasted. Sure Arjo roast every day, but I bet the supplier of Aldi beans roasts every day too. Roasting every day doesn't necessarily mean it was roasted the same day they post it out.

    • Which Aldi beans do you use ?

      • I tried dark, medium, and Brazil. I'm back to medium now. Dark was too strong in flavour and Brazil was good but slightly too strong. I wonder if I should have bought Brazil, but the Arjo beans I ordered taste just like the medium and I was satisfied with the flavour so I went medium again.

        • Aldi's Dark roast is mix of Arabica/Robusta beans and that explain its bitterness and being too strong. I tried Brazil couple of times and was impressed for its freshness and taste (I have milk based coffee). I think Brazil beans is seasonally so limited to some months. Might give the medium roast a go at some point.

    • Both Arjo and Aldi put their roast date on the bag the beans come in, Aldi's is reversed.

Its very very standard practice as not doing it makes people not buy your coffee.

    • I've also had some good experiences with half-price Vittoria Oro beans from the supermarket ($13/kg) and the Aldi ones. I do like to buy from the guys who post bargains here because they're small local businesses (unlike Aldi). And I think everyone's experience is different re taste. As long as you get fresh beans, from anywhere, they are probably pretty good.

      • Vittoria beans bags has no roast date and would probably be many month sitting on the shelves?

        • Yeah but I believe they fill them with nitrogen to stop the beans from breaking down and becoming stale.

    • I think airjo are better than aldi. I've tried most of Aldi's beans except Colombia, haven't seen those in ages.

Don't get me wrong, I think aldi are great, even their medium roast cheapie is fantastic.

  • Thanks Dan.

  • +1

Tried once before, but won't buy again. (Enterprise Blend).

Had to set the grinder on very fine before I could get a good extraction, almost the limit of the grinder. This doesn't happen with other beans. For me this was not a good indicator of quality.

    • What grinder? I’ve had Enterprise a heap of times. No probs on Breville Smart Grinder Pro

      • A good grinder that has no issues with other beans: Mignon Specialita, a big step up from the smart grinder pro.

It wasn't the grinder, the beans I got were the problem. Maybe I got a bad batch. It was like what happens to really old beans, as they age you need a finer grind setting. Who knows why it happened. I replaced beans with different brand and no issues.

Interesting my post was negged for sharing my experience with these beans. Is this a loyalty club where dissent isn't permitted?

        • I didn’t neg, if you’re wondering. I think opposite experiences can all be valid.

I find it strange a fancy grinder struggled. And how it’s the bean that’s the problem. But I don’t know much, to be honest.

With bambino plus & that Breville grinder, I’ve managed to get 20+ different beans to produce quality with that common formula people use (can’t remember it’s name?).

          • @Ulysses31: Bad batches happen. It was probably a bad batch.

To be clear, I did try to fix the issue… even on very fine grind setting, the extraction was spluttering and watery. Never had the problem with other beans. Something was wrong with the beans I was sent from Airjo. But obviously others are not having issues, and that's great. I use lots of different beans without issue, so I'm quite confident I got a bad batch in this case. Possibly out of date, or perhaps subjected to extreme conditions during postage.. who knows.

  • Cheers mate, topped up, appreciate your speedy fresh deliveries also
