Really want a Seiko but these just lack a bit of character for me.

  Agreed, always found the look of these a bit odd, strange diver-like face but no bezel. Prefer the diver versions or going with the classic SNK800 series (although objectively worse specs).

    Yes agreed. It's a good deal but to me it feels like a watch that doesn't know what it wants to be.
    
    Regarding the strap, no stress there though. The standard Seiko 5 metal bracelets are usually pretty poor quality and are best replaced anyway, so this velcro one doesn't change that fact.
