Just noticed this deal on Amazon. No idea whether the PNY brand is any good or not, but figured the price is cheap enough to make a post about. Certainly never seen a 240gb drive this cheap before.

Also says the item ships within the US, so you'd need to use Shipitto.com or a similar service for delivery. From memory they charge about $21 for an SSD from Amazon.

  • SandForce 2281 controller;
Up to 550MB/s seq. read, 515MB/s seq.
write and 85K Random Read/Write IOPS (at 4K block size)

nice… purchased, though its +10 tax for some reason. and only 4 left in stock… so limited stock deal. well actually 3 now…
    edit 5 now…
also changed to another shipito no tax location and its taken the tax off…so ship it o should add about 25 bux shipping making it still quite reasonable.

note there are also other amazon companies around that price as well.

  • It appears that it can be shipped directly from Amazon too.

  • +5

Nice, but delivery to Australia is $90+..here is what you pay at checkout (total $233)

    Items: AUD 141.43
    Shipping & Handling: AUD 91.86
    Total Before Tax: AUD 233.29
    Estimated Tax To Be Collected:*

So its not really a great bargain for a brand that isn't well known..

    • Realised that about 30 seconds ago… I suppose if you lived in the US it'd be a good bargain. Also only 3 left in stock at the time of writing.

    • +1

So you'd really need the PNY Express to handle delivery.

  • Not actually sold & stocked by Amazon this is why the shipping charges are so high

  • the shipping killed the deal :( sigh

    • +1

Just try using Shipitto.com or one of those similar services. They charge a small fee but it's still quite cheap.

      • +3

From my experience shipitto etc are not cheap and always end up costing you more than you were expecting .

        • +1

I ended up using comGateway, it will be about $22 for shipping.

        • +3

I'll let you know how much it is with shipito, let me know and ill complain to shipito if you get if for less.

  • +2

Great deal. Can use ship forwarders to get the shipping cost down.

  • These ? brands will put the pressure on the known brands to bring prices down. Good post even if it is just to see current price trends.

  • It's not Amazon stock it says "Sold by Technology Galaxy"
total "$228.62" so not a bargain..

    • +1

thats if you dont use a mail forwarder, should be about +20 bux for a mail forwarding company.

  • +1

I was really keen to chuck it in my PS3 until the shipping showed its ugly face…

    • just use a mail forwarding company- should add about 20 bux!

    • I'd only put a reliable brand one like Crucial M4 or Intel in a PS3 though, if those, I don't want to suddenly lose all my saved games.

  • Great deal. Bought one…shipping will be minimal as I have a bunch of stuff coming togather via comgateway…

  • i have a parcel to be shipped to Sydney very recently. Anyone does have interest may contact me, but only if you can meet me up on the weekdays in Sydney CBD (George St/Market St) for pickup.I am not sure about the exact shipping cost you may need to pay at this stage though.i use MyUS.

the question is if it is a good quality ssd?

  • got one, thanks!

  • all gone.

    • Nope, there's more stock again!

      • but at $168 plus shipping

  • Just placed an order using comGateway as the shipping third party, the SSD from Amazon came up as AUD 141.43. Not sure where the extra $3 came from, as it's listed as $138.60 on the website. Doesn't matter though.

    • 138.60 US$ & 141.48 AU$

      • +2

Never use the ripoff Amazon currency conversion, always pay in USD…it's almost guaranteed that you'll get better exchange rates from your own CC or even Paypal!!! :)

        • Crap, I didn't even notice it converted it. I just assumed the price went up a couple dollars due to lower stock. Oh well :(

        • +1

Don't worry, we've all been caught at some stage. Amazon are shifty too, if you're not paying attention you'll find that your saved preference for USD is frequently reset to AUD automagically at random times…you have to check every purchase! ;)

    Found it cheaper here:
    http://www.provantage.com/pny-technologies-ssd9sc240gcda-pb~…
    $125.06 USD
    Shipping for one $35.80 USD
    Shipping for two $37.70 USD
    Shipping for three $38.70 USD
    etc
Could possibly get better shipping rates through a freight forwarder

The downside? They only accept AMEX and bank transfers for international payments.

Can't vouch for the site myself but this thread on OCN indicates they are legit:
    http://www.overclock.net/t/506191/is-this-site-legit

    Currently 103 units in stock.

    • +1

the 120gig version is $64.37 USD.

      damn.

    • anyone in melbourne wants to split the shipping with me?

      • yeah but i've already ordered and its being forwarded to shipito, think one person would have to order them both…

  • Now $165

    • yeah all the cheaper places have sold out…

  • It seems Amazon has 'corrected' their price, they're charging $259 now and the cheapest listed price of $165 is not Amazon and they don't ship to Australia.

    • use cobalt's website.

  • +1

I want 480gb or 512gb :) hope it drop a bit more soon. cool!

  • +1

Anyone know how these drives fare in terms of reliability? According to the specs it uses the Sandforce 2281 controller?

  • Thanks for the link! Just ordered 14 over 2 orders to save on GST from customs hehe

  • +1

And if both packages are shipped at same time you will still get hit with gst

    • +1

As long as the two orders are shipped in different boxes there won't be an issue. Each order will have it's own customs value declaration.

      • +1

        Strictly speaking that's not correct:

"Consignor is the person or organisation overseas that sends goods (the sender).

Consignee is the person or organisation in Australia that receives the goods (the receiver).

If multiple packages arrive in Australia to the same consignee sent from a single consignor overseas, the value of all packages may be combined for duty and tax assessment purposes."

        • +1

i'll take that chance….its only gst, and still cheaper with gst than locally.

        • GST @ 10% plus customs duty @ 5% but don't let that stop you.

        • I think its too late…LOL

  • that's cool

Just did a bit of digging. PNY offer two different drives under the 'Prevail' series. This is the cheaper one using the 2281 controller. The more expensive one is the 'Prevail Elite' using the 2282 controller. So beware that the image on both retailers websites is wrong as they wrongly picture these to be 'Prevail Elite' drives.

The manufacturer's actual product page is here: http://www3.pny.com/Prevail-SSD-240GB---SATA-6Gbs-P3138C501.…

The 2281 controller has been found to actually NOT support 256-bit AES encryption, so the product description (including the manufacturer's website) is also wrong.

Lastly I note that there have previously been issues with this controller that are usually fixed with firmware updates. I can't see any SSD firmware on the PNY support page, and that makes me a tad weary of this drive.

    • I can find no reliable reference to the existence of a Sandforce 2282 controller, just random posts on some forums dating back to mid 2011. I suspect that it was a typo and they meant 2281. But you're right about the pictures on both Amazon and Provantage being wrong.

I suspect the drives from Amazon and Provantage will actually look like this:
      http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820178…

Provantage also stock the Elite model, but it's just over double the price of the non-elite version:
      http://www.provantage.com/pny-technologies-ssd9sc240gede-pb~…

      • +1

The Prevail Elite uses the 2282: http://www3.pny.com/Prevail-Elite-SSD-240GB---SATA-6Gbs-P309…

I don't understand how you could not find any 'reliable reference to the existence' of the 2282. I just googled 'sandforce 2282' and got a myriad of hits?

        Eg: http://www.hitechlegion.com/reviews/storage/hdd/18709-corsai…

        • On further investigation, it appears that the 180 and 480 Force GT's use the 2282 chip and the rest use the 2281. Good on Corsair for making their products so confusing.

Another difference between the PNY Prevail SSD & The PNY Prevail Elite SSD is the following:

"Features high endurance Compute NAND rated flash with Program/Erase cycles
of 3K (Prevail) and 10K (Prevail Elite) to support all commercial needs, from system builders
        to server deployments"

Found this as well on 2282 vs 2281 controller:
"The Sandforce consumer-level controller comes in two variations 2281 and 2282. The only difference is in the maximum capacity of the drive to which they can be attached. The 2281 is meant for drives 512 GB and under. The 2282 is meant for drives 512 GB and over. They are otherwise identical. The 2282 is not newer."

Also they are apparently assembled in the USA, if that means anything these days… lol

  • Just noticed this has a 5 year warranty backed by PNY. Makes me more confident in my purchase.

    • Few brand/model combinations of SSDs are worth the warranty that they are given. Manufacturers thought SSD's wouldn't die when they first started releasing them, so they gave them long warranties. They were wrong - the nand lasts ages but the controllers tend to die. After 5 years of warranties I honestly wonder if these companies will make a loss on early model SSDs.

Sorry to say but sandforce is the riskiest controller of the lot.

  • Also found this http://www.tomshardware.com/news/pny-ssd-sandforce-solid-sta…

Not sure if it is all about this; but seems talking about Elite and normal Prevail series.

  • Wow Provantage just doubled their prices….

  • anyone that bought from amazon have it arrive at their freight forwarding company yet? mine should arrive today at the latest but still havent heard anything… man it takes forever!

    • I know, I bought it on the day the deal was published and its STILL not at CGW. Which sucks cos I have packages ready to go and it's going to cost me $1 per day to have them stored there!

    • ComGateway haven't recieved mine either. Hope they get it tomorrow and send it out ASAP… :( Really want this SSD badly.

      • hmm, I haven't received any email as yet, but no drive either… though mine was sold by "Technology Galaxy" ill shoot off an email tomorrow if i dont hear anything by then… pretty bad though…

mine does however say "Shipped" did yours get that far vchung916?

        • Mine is with Technology Galaxy as well. I emailed them and got this reply:

"Our apologies, as it appears to have been delayed until 7/2/12. Did you want to cancel per the delay?"

The issue is I already received a notification from Amazon telling me the item has shipped, and my card has been charged. Considering whether to wait and get a refund, or just buy a LiteOn drive locally for $190.

        • I actually used "contact seller" in Amazon to ask about the shipping issue as the status was still "shipping soon" as of this monday. The email above is the reply from the seller and Amazon.

I guess if it's shipped then you can check the status from amazon and see if it's on its way to your forwarder.

        • ask them to cancel it, if its already shipping maybe they have sent it and you'll get it for free ;)

        • yeah mine is saying it's shipped as well…WTF

        • I just got a reply from Galaxy Technology:

"Our apologies as we meant 8/2/12. There appears to be a shortage with distribution."

So a delay until the 2nd August, I've decided to cancel my order. My credit card has been charged already, so hopefully they'll refund me my money ASAP.

        • I've just contacted the seller though amazon… ill see if they do the same… ill also be cancelling mine if they havent sent it…not good enough… will almost be a month by the time i get it…

        • as a follow up i ended up getting a refund, its back in my account, not sure how much its affected being a refund in USD, think i was hit twice with currency conversion fees… once to buy and once for the refund.

          anyone end up getting one?
