I had a housemate who refused to clean. I noticed I was the only one emptying the dishwasher, so I emptied it one last time and started hand washing my own dishes after. She filled the dishwasher with every knife, fork, spoon, and bowl while I kept rewashing a single set I kept in my room. She would stomp around the house over it, the TV and picture frames would shake. She would get home, open the dishwasher to check that her dishes didn't magically wash and put themselves away yet, and then slam it shut hard. Those dishes were in there for months while she had nothing to use because she couldn't bring herself to wash her own dishes. She ended up buying plastic cutlery and paper bowls and plates. What was funny was that as much as it annoyed me that she wished I would be her servant, it 100x pissed her off more that I wouldn't be her servant.

    • Wow.. you should use this service.
@sharehouse can this verify if people are slobs?

We'll add this feature to our product roadmap 😅

    • indeed story about a pig in human shell, condolenses

    • was she hot?

I learnt from experience that cleaning duties will never be fair when it comes to flat sharing and one person will always do more than the other. I'm the leaseholder at my place and I charge my flatmate $65 more than what I'm paying and I do all the dishes, take the trash out and weekly cleans myself and also buy consumables (rubbish bin bags, washing liquid etc)

We've been living together for almost a year and she said im the best flatmate ever!

Picture frames on the walls shook when she stomped. She was not hot.

Also, I'm gay so maybe I wouldn't know if she could be hot. But I've never seen someone who looked like her pinned to a firestation wall.

    • So wait, she didn't know how to turn the dishwasher on?
It's not like dishes were pilling on in the sink - odd.

      • That was the saving grace of it I guess, the dishes were at least out of sight in the dishwasher. And I don't mind cleaning, main motivation with a dishwasher for me is saving water to help the planet.

She knew how it worked. It was just beneath her. The running theory is that she came from a country where her family was the upper caste, better than most of the rest of her country. The idea that everyone in Australia is equal to each, that any random person's time is every bit as valuable as her own time, other just didn't grok.

Just use Optus or Medibank Data

I came for this comment and was not disappointed.

    • To enhance verification I recommend using both to cross-check.

"Sharehouse will not share your ID Check results with other companies or organizations. ". This is from your website, however that can't be true as you are not Gateway Service Provider so you have to share data with a GSP company if you actually "verify" IDs…

Thanks for calling this out @BangLee, will look to amend the wording immediately *now fixed*. Appreciate the link and concern. Feel free to DM me as well.

So, you are making your own terms and conditions on the go? Terms and conditions should be meticulously reviewed and approved by lawyers. This is probably the most important aspect of your business. It's these conditions that form the basis of your contract with users. It's also the source for every regulator to take action against you for a plethora of reasons especially privacy and competition and consumer laws. I'd tread very carefully.

        • Appreciate your concern/recommendations @DreaminBargains. This specific wording oversight occurred on the product FAQ page and was quickly amended. I'll have this side of our business reviewed. Thank you

@sharehouse: You basically sound like a 2 man operation right now with no idea about anything! Terms and conditions and how you handle data in the current climate should be at the top of your list. Your amateur at best and reckless af at worst!

            • @Iwantthebestprice: Thanks for your feedback @iwantthebestprice. We apologize if we have given the impression that we are not knowledgeable or professional. While it is true that our team is small at present, all companies start out small and we are proud of the progress we have made so far. Our product has been built by someone with professional experience in both the Banking and Security sector, and we take the handling of our customer's data very seriously. We have implemented various measures to ensure the security/protection of our customers' data, such as encryption, secure servers and appropriate access controls. If you have any specific concerns about how we handle data let me know. I've been personally affected by the Optus hack so I appreciate your concern and think it's great that people are waking up to how negligent companies are, and how important data security is. Australians deserve better. Cheers

  • I may give it a go.

OP, I'd like to know the statistic of how many people on your site are offering a Housemate vs how many people are looking for a Sharehouse, in VIC only. Please share the actual statistic and not a % differential (or equivalent)

    • Cheers @James D. Sure thing, in the last 30 days we've had:
      - 59 housemate profiles created,
      - 9 room listings created
      - 1.5k unique visitors
      - 5.9k page views

We're working on getting the housemate/room balance right (as well as general promotion of the platform).

Are you looking for a place, or a flatmate?

      • I'm looking for a place, I live in a somewhat toxic environment so yeah would be nice to move in with nice CLEAN likeminded people…. I know that people like me are a dim a dozen these days but oh well, as the good saying goes nothing ventured nothing gained. I'll likely give your site a go OP, thank you.

        • Sorry to hear that mate, not a fun environment. The market is definitely tough at the moment so you may want to hold out until you have something confirmed (keep a roof over your head). To maximise your chances of success I would recommend checking out Facebook groups as well (I think you'll still be up against heaps of competing renters). Fairy Floss and Rent Network are the two Melbourne groups I would recommend. I've written a blog post here that links to those two groups. Good luck, hope it helps
