These robots are going the way of iPhones - ridiculously priced for a "little more" technology!

    • +2

Mop has upgrades to also can talk/listen to people via wifi thru its mic, you can watch your house thru the camera. Next might be an interactive anti-boredom pet mode, a pointing laser for cats to play with, a water fountain for dogs…way better than an iphone!

I’d like to get my first robot vacuum. And prepared to spend a little more to make sure that my first experience is a good one.

Is this the bees knees? Is there something that would realistically be just as good (in terms of most of the main features being prsesent and comparable) but is way cheaper?

My home is split level. Are they capable of being able to be picked up and put on the second level and told to start a vac & mop cycle and ‘learn’ the floor plan of the second level too?

    • +5

The S7+ deal from the other day is almost as good, it doesn't have the front cameras and a couple of other minor things but not worth the $1400 price difference IMO. It was just over a grand.

      • +3

Isn't the suction power half on that one? Considering what to buy too.

        • +1

Vacuum wars on YT showed that the lower suction compared to other models didn’t translate into lower clean level, the big brother S7 MaxV would presumably be better however.

I’m in same boat, first robot, I just bought the $1098 S7+ on yesterdays’ deal.

          • +1

@Vorsprungdurchtech: Not only for the suction. The mopping for this is a beast.

          • +2

@Vorsprungdurchtech: I've got the S7+ and would recommend it as a cheaper alternative with almost as much benefit. It allows for split level cleaning - I've done it - and unlike this MaxV Ultra, you can have a Dyson style bagless self-empty bin (if you're keen to reduce your ongoing costs = there's a bag self empty bin version too of the s7+).

Self empty stations are definitely helpful as long as you keep your expectations in check ie don't believe the marketing that you won't have to touch your vacuum for a month. I find I often have to unblock the robot's bin because it accumulates so much dust (obv YMMV) and pull out long hairs from the main brush. I can see the self empty water tank system would be a little handy but I think refilling the water bin and switching the mop pads (which I only do rarely) are not the most annoying regular maintenance tasks anyway.

I have been tempted a few times by the Ultra MaxV but I'm not convinced the new cameras improve its obstacle avoidance capability. The security feature isn't useful to me but it might be if you have pets or an elderly relative in the home.

Realistically any robot vacuum from the major brands that costs $500 or more is going to be pretty good at just cleaning your floors. Lidar guidance, whole home mapping and scheduled cleaning are the bare minimum that I'd be willing to accept - anything less is going to be annoying and not worth the cash.

The high price on this particular model is mostly because of the mechanically-complex base station - the part that enables a self-emptying waste bin and a self-cleaning mops. This feature allow you to basically not touch your vacuum for up to a month at a time - it will just quietly do its thing and you just need to empty the 2 bins occasionally.

If you're willing to stoop to emptying the dust bin yourself after every 1-2 vacuums, and cleaning the mopping pads yourself after a mopping session (like a filthy peasant :-) you can easily spend $1000 less.

IMO you need to set an acceptable budget, and then find the best product in that price range.

As for the split level thing - yes, they can learn two different floor plans and you can move the machine between them. Here's the Roborock page explaining how it works: https://support.roborock.com/hc/en-us/articles/900002181666-…

    • I believe this is the current bee's knees. Better half and I sat through several days of YouTube reviews and this one appears to be the best. To answer your question, after you've mapped your house you can pick it up and take it somewhere, tell it to start cleaning and it will do a few spins to figure out where it is and then off it goes. App is pretty good, makes a map and then let's you customise it with names etc. When it hits an obstacle it'll take a photo, also can be used like a remote control car when you're away from home. The camera and audio are really good - I had a video call with the family while I was away for work and there was no lag at all, I was quite surprised that it was probably better than our Google home hub calls. Also as a novelty it vacuums and mops, better than the iRobot models it replaced in our home. I picked one up in the last deal for a similar price.

      • Care to sure what other models you compared it too for this to come out on top? There was a Dreame one and a EcoVacs one i was looking at. Mostly because they had spinning mop heads instead. Also that self cleaned and dried.

Gòod vacuum but well over priced. Id buy if money was no object.

My $500 Roborock S5 from like 5 years ago is still killing it in value. I am not sure that the extra $2K is required. Sadly, I have split level and I have to be careful about getting it to do that but I do. I would probably pay a little more for it to have that function.

    • Thank you all!

I appreciate the info and experiences. I've decided to take the plunge throw money into the abyss (doesn't happen often).

    • If you need mopping then nothing comes close I think. If I wouldn't need mopping, I would definitely go for Roomba though - I think they are better quality. But since I need daily mopping, I went with this. I had a S6 maxv before, and after 2 years it definitely wasn't running like new, it was still ok but I started wondering when is it going to fail, so I upgraded to this when first good deal popped up (costed me just under 2k).
One advice - try to use genuine parts, even that non-genuine look pretty much the same, my S6 maxv was definitely performing worse when using non-genuine parts

Review is good, but price is super.

This better deal is direct from Roborock, except wait for the delivery.

Mopping is better than s7+, more suction, dock also refills and cleans mops, better camera/mapping.

    • +1

      this doesn't have the dock.

      • -1

        Yes it does. :)
For over 2K it would want to…

      • Buy the dock separately for+$699…

        • it’s $1099

          • @Your Friend: My bad. The "recommended" dock on that page is the s7+ dock for $699…not the MaxV dock. No idea why theyd pair it that way

  • Let us get some exercise and use the $250 Dyson V7 from the BigW Deal we got https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/721856

    • +1

And spend the rest on smashed avo brunches!

  • Hmm $2500….so 10 of these an get me a tesla optimus

  • The exactly same model called G10S in mainland China which is sold under 1k recently, so can't really figure out why is oversea model is 300% more expensive than that.

    • +1

Because Xiaomi blocked app access for the G10s outside of China, which means you have to operate the unit via the button on the robot, and you won't be able to use any of the app functions like mop/sweep areas restriction, auto timers etc. You used to be able to setup a router with VPN connected to China and then connecting the robot to that router to get the app working outside of China, but Xiaomi has blocked that within the last month and there are no known methods of gaining access to the app at this point.

      • Wow that sounds incredibly stupid. What value do they get for geo-blocking software functionality?

        • To force people who value the app to buy the unit posted in this deal ;) Which as Saveyourass pointed out, it's almost 3x the price :(

      • +1

The G10S Pro is the same model in China, but as boku mentioned it is region locked so there's no app functionality.

The only work around I could get working is swapping the main board for a S7 MaxV one, which was about $120 on AliExpress on 11.11. It's a fiddly disassembly though.

Basically no warranty but saved a bunch of money and everything app related works fine!

  • +3

pretty greedy distributor here. this thing is sold less than$1000 in China.

    • +1

buy one from china, root it then put valetudo on it

      • No idea how to do all this. Even if I do I probably won't know how to restore everything if I mess up.

  • If you have access to taobao I picked up a dreame s10 pro plus for ~950 delivered to Australia and it does everything this does.

    • Does this do multi level maps?

      • dreame is geolocked as well. some previous model were hacked, but not the flagship.

    • it won't work. they geolock the whole thing to keep the AUS price up. that is the deal they made with Aus distributor. without those functions in the App, it is no better than a $300 robot with local support.

  • This is $1000 overprice.

  • Looks like a coffee machine, it should be able to make a coffee for that price!
