My last Salomon boots x3 ultra had the sole glue failing after a couple months of occasional use. Poor quality and high price tag, not using them again

    • +3

I bought the Lyngen (sp?) GTX ones last time for $99. Have been rock solid. And Mine are only ever worn in rugged/wet/muddy conditions. Last pair was about 2 years before I moved to another pair, the old ones are still used for mowing the lawns :)

      • +1

Yeah I have some expensive salomon's and havent really used them much or ruggedly but they are great so far. Annoying that there might be inconsistency in QA/build quality going by the top poster.

        • I wouldnt pay full price, but at $99 they have been great. I miss the old Columbia store days when they would have 50% off clearance sales, bought many pairs back in the day for sub$70 :D

    • The stitching has come apart on the right boot of my pair, no issues with the left boot. There's no grip if you're wading creeks & rivers either

      • Which model, the deal or the X Ultra 3? Have two pairs of the wide XU3 mid and both have been excellent for grip in all conditions, and quality - zero problems and no sole damage even after use on sharp and rocky terrain. The higher priced walking/hiking Salomon's shouldn't fail and I'd be contacting their support to get a refund/replacement.

      • They start out slippery and need to be roughed up on road etc. before having enough grip. Then they are great. No issues with stitching on mine (same model as deal).

    • My previous pair of Salomons have lasted 10 years…

  • Thanks op! I was looking for one waterproof outdoor pair. Had a cheap non waterproof pair and lesson in my last trip.

I can't speak for their entry level hiking boots, but Salomon Quests are rock solid and tough. I don't think $99 hiking boots could be expected to be worth the money.

I once bought one of Salomon's cheap trail running shoes and they were uncomfortable and barely lasted one race.

    • +1

Dont know about entry level, the RRP is $269.99 - whether anyone actually pays that much is a whole other story though :)
My ones were also this RRP, but only paid $99 - as per my previous post, no issues, and mine regularly get soaked with mud and water and rain etc.

    • +1

THIS! I've used Salomon Quest (long multi day hiking) and the XA Pro (trail running and day hiking) shoes for the last 10 years; best shoes I've used and they are built like a tank.

  • Are these true to size? Should I order the same size as my Nike for example?

    • +2

It's a long shot to get a reliable answer.

Keep in mind you may be wearing a thick sock in these, so 0.5 size difference might not be an issue.

    • +2

Don't know about Nike but my experience suggests at least one size up is required. I have two pairs of the 3UX mids (higher end than this deal), one is 10.5 US (tight-ish) and the second (a later purchase) 11 US - perfect. My normal shoe size is 9 UK or 10 US. Both of my 3UXs are the wide versions, my feet wouldn't fit into the standard narrow versions.

My research prior to buying and subsequent experience suggests that Salomon "trail" shoes are usually relatively small and narrow, ie not true to size. Ymmv

    • +2

I know my exact shoe size but no two hiking shoes feel the same. There was no size for this product that my feet felt comfortable with. You want to try in a store before ordering online or you might not have an enjoyable hike!

    • +2

I tried some on earlier today, I am 13 in Nike, 12 in these. Ideally I would be a 12.5 in thier sizing.
It is best to ignore US, UK, Aus sizing and stick to Euro for more consistency across brands. I ma 47, and use that for refence on all shoes.

For what it's worth, I thought the shoes were a bit shite. I guess ok for $89/99, but that's it, horrible tongue situation.

    • +3

if you have a wider foot, then make sure you do a test fit - in my experience Salomon seem to have a narrow fit

    • +7

Noting this is the same what the OP mentioned in the very first words of their post.

    Thanks, got a pair

Thanks I got a pair. I used code WELCOME10 to bring down to $89, and delivery is still free!

      added to description

  • I have reasonably wide feet. Does anyone know if these run a little narrow or wide?

    Thanks

    • +6

Most Salomons run narrow. I’ve got fat feet, so can’t wear them. Bought a pair for the missus though.

      • +1

how can a hiking boot run narrow.
I thought dress shoes run narrow

        • They make them for narrow feet, presumably because that's now a "typical" foot shape for their user base. Most hiking boots are now snug, made to keep twisting and movement within the boot to a minimum.

In Australia wide fit used to be standard for mens shoes, haven't got a clue if that still applies. Unlikely I suppose, given nearly everything is made OS and our market isn't huge.

    • +3

Don't do it. Salomon notorious for being narrow and I got burnt last time with this issue.

    • +1

I am a woman and find their so called wide fit men's is a snug fit.
I have a couple of pairs of their speedcross shoes for work and they are very grippy and good for when you are on your feet all day.
Suggest if you have narrow feet they are more likely to fit.
Agree with others about Eu sizing too. That's much easier to use as you can use it for men's and women's feet .

  • +4

Salomon is generally narrow fit, purchased Lyngen from this deal, had to return.

Good thing they accept returns in store, so didn't need to fork out to send them back.

  • +1

Bugger. Really wanted to jump on this but I buy wide runners (2e)

  • Thank OP, I've been waiting for this deal to return.

  • Thanks OP, I ordered a pair

  • +2

Thanks for the deal! Quality not what it used to be 15 yrs ago but still worth it at this price. As noted by others narrow fit I always up-size by 1/2

  • thank you, never have hiking shoes. hopefully its not disappointing quality

  • +3

Bought 2 pairs one for me one for my partner (in our 30s) and I feel like the 70-year-old couples that have same hiking shoes. LOL :)

  • Ozbargainers always have the answers in the comments so I want to ask for winter boot suggestions.

The ones I've found recommended online are US and Canadian brands that I can't seem to find here.

    Any recommendations for winter boots?

    • Check "adventure megastore". They often sell Sorel and other great brands for winter. Might have to pop into DFO homebush or birkenhead for stock checks.

      • Thank you!

  • +1

Bought some last time, they're pretty average. They're a bit too narrow and don't seem well built.

    • the cheap salomons from anaconda are all like that. theyre like some weird discount lines that barely even seem to exist anywhere else

that said, get them as cheap as you can and get them muddy, and they do pretty well. I enjoy mine heaps

  • Most so-called "outdoor" footwear has moved to at least EE fitting….at least as far as Aussie sizing goes anyway.
It's the Euro's who persist with the narrow fit in my experience.

  • +1

I would rather wear a pair of ALDI steel cap boots ,I have had 3paird now all of which obsorbed water even when walking on bitumen or concrete. On top of that they have no grip whatsoever on steep ground even firebreaks.

  • +1

I got my order today and they gave me the wrong bloody size. The store security tag with a flashing LED light is still attached LOL

Its now out of stock so ive missed out, and lost out on the welcome credit

    • +1

FYI, welcome10 credit is for any online purchase over $50. It is not for first order only - I have been spamming code for years with same club account.

  • I received my order today. I confirm they run a bit narrow and are comfier with 1/2 up-sizing. Can't wait to test them now

  • Anyone who's bought, do they stretch at all? I'm guessing gore-tex is minimal change in the shoe shape once worn.
