Bowmore 15 $87.49 (OOS) Talisker 10 & Scapa Glansa Bundle $159.98 & Free 200ml Haku Vodka + Del (10% off First Order) @ Boozebud

Bowmore 15 is aged for 10 years in first-fill toasted bourbon barrels and then a full 5 years in Oloroso sherry casks. From memory, Bowmores in general have a perfumy, floral character, quite fruity and moderately peated. Bottled at 43% ABV. Very good value for a very good malt.

Talisker 10 & Scapa Glansa Bundle $159.98 (+Free 200ml Haku Vodka) - T10 is always solid, but I haven't tried Scapa since they dropped the age statement. The 14 was a fine malt with light peat, similar to the other Orkney distillery, Highland Park. the 14 and this new one are both bottled at 40% ABV, not ideal imo, but if you want to tick a less popular distillery off your list, I'd buy this bundle.

Other recs:

BoozeBud Merry Whisk-mas Glenlivet & Redbreast Whisky Bundle (+Free 200ml Haku) $179 - The Glenlivet Carribean Reserve is an NAS malt finished in rum casks, similar to Balvenie 14 Carribean and Glenfiddich 21. I haven't tried it but it's bottled at 40% ABV so it'd be "smooth" at least and have tropical notes from the rum casks. Redbreast Lastau is an Irish potstill whiskey; matured in bourbon and finished in sherry, bottled at 46% ABV. This is a very interesting whiskey; Redbreasts are tripled distilled in copper potstills (like Scotch) using a mash of malted and unmalted barley (not like Scotch). There are only a handful of Irish whiskeys I'd buy, and Redbreast in one of them.

Talisker Scotch Christmas Bundle (+free haku 200ml) $240 - I don't even know if this is good value. T10 is T10, Storm is like a fiestier T10, have't tried Skye but it'd probably have the same Talisker profile: smokey, peppery, briny, medium peat. At least they kept the ABV at 45.8% even for the NAS.

Redbreast 15 $169.59 (+free haku 200ml) - possibly the best Irish under $200, along with the Redbreast 12 CS. See my comment above for more info about this distilling process. The 15 is bottled at 46% - quite complex, perfect amount of oaky spices, fresh and dried fruits. It's almost like a Scotch, but not.

Ardbeg Uigeadail $151.90 (+free haku 200ml) - one of my favourites. Bottled at 54,2% ABV, sherried with strong peat, but nicely balanced and full bodied. I'm surprised the price hasn't gone up that much, it was $140ish 10 years ago.
Cheaper here with eBay plus (thanks @plimsol): https://www.ebay.com.au/itm/283876498561

Overeem Sherry $169.99 (+free haku 200ml) - Overeem is a top 3 Australian distillery imo. This is bottled at 43% but punches above it's weight. It is a bit pricey but you're buying from a true artisan distiller. I met Casey Overeem in 2012 and his set up was a smallish potstill in his shed in his backyard. His health was declining at the time and Lark bought him out, then Bill Lark sold out to a bunch of guys and Lark became a publicly listed company, and Casey regained ownership. I think that's what happened. Anyway, Overeem is very good, my favourite being the Port CS. Don't buy the BS $200+ 500ml Larks. Buy Overeem.

Rittenhouse Rye is the only good American but cheaper elsewhere. Paul John for $80 is great value and fine malts, but I'm an Amrut guy. Old Kempton was good when it was still Redlands. I'm not sure if they are still doing farm-to-bottle, but $200+ for 500ml is a hard pass. Millstone is a very good Dutch rye. That's about it

Please don't buy any of the Japanese whisky, they are overpriced and NOT GOOD. I looked through everything and the above are the only ones that are worth the price.

Check out the Boozebud ebay store, some of the stuff is cheaper, and with free delivery if you have ebay plus

    Fantastic detail.
The Bowmore is a ripper at this price, only problem is the bottle is super tall and doesn't fit in the shelf where I keep all our other whiskeys!

Ardbeg Uigeadail is $132.72 in the Boozebud eBay store, if you have eBay Plus (and haven’t used the voucher) and don’t want the vodka

    • Thanks, edited

    • damn that is a ripper price!

having lived in the UK, feels painful to see the prices of these here :-(

I used to buy a lot of stuff from Master of Malt (managed to get a trade account by bullshitting), The Whisky Excange, Royal Mile and Nickolls and Perks. It was great when the packages slipped through customs, but even if I got taxed it, was worth it at the time because the stuff I was buying wasn't available here.

Edit: was supposed to reply to @Maestrok

How often would it get past customs?

      • +1

Depended on the origin country, carrier and how many bottles. MoM and TWE I was placing huge orders so I got taxed most of the time. N&P and RM I only ordered 4 bottles max and it slipped through 80% of the time. Rakuten (when it was sort of like Amazon for Japanese stuff) I was placing orders of about 10-12 bottles at a time because shipping was very high, but still manage to dodge customs maybe half the time. Whiskybase I was ordering 3 at a time and was also 50/50. Whisky Galore in NZ, one at a time, never got taxed. Friends in the US sending me single bottles, never taxed. The best one was when I won about 12 bottles from a German auction site with the value of about $8-10k, which I was fully prepared for it to get snagged, but it slipped through. Saved me maybe over $2k

A few Talisker's and Ardbeg Uigeadail on their eBay page have decent prices. I might hold off, I have a cabinet full at the moment and am going to Islay in June next year :)

Great post, thanks! Any other suggestions for an Uigeadail alternative? Also one of my favourite whiskies but I'd like to buy something I can afford to drink a bit more often haha

Sadly, everything has gone up. Laphroaig Quarter Cask is ex-bourbon but is over $100 (used to be $70-80), There's a travel exclusive Laphroaig PX 1L, I can't remember how much it costs. There's a new Laphroaig 10 Sherry but is $170. Talisker Port Ruighe is port finished but not much cheaper. Coal Ila DE is moscatel finished but only 43% ABV. The Uigie is probably the cheapest peat/sherry/CS combo unfortunately.

Even the non-Islay distilleries that do peat and sherry like Benromach, Arran, Benriach etc are not as peaty and costs about the same. Really hard to find a Uigeadail alternative; been trying to think of one for 15 minutes. The are some non Scotch ones but they're all well over $200.

It's essentially Peat/Sherry/High ABV - pick 2 for ~$150. Only the Uigeadail does all three.

Edit: forgot about Kilchoman Loch Gorm which is about $160. Springbank/Longrow used to do really interesting wine finishes and were around $150. If you want to try something different, go for Bunnahabhain 12, sherried and lightly peated, very interesting whisky.

      • Thanks for another detailed write up haha
I've had a good springbank not long ago but they've all gone in price a lot recently.
I have the Bunnahabhain somewhere but I shelved it as I couldn't taste the peat at all, and I've got Glendronach for sherry bombs.
I tried something that came close enough for the price savings ($80) at Whiskey Live but was too drunk to remember the name :')
Doesn't have to be cask strength if the price is right.. I think most cheaper options are drying up though..

  • Bruichladdich (undoubtedly spelled incorrectly) Port Charlotte has a fantastic combo of sweet sherry cask, smokey peat and at 50% also ticks the high ABV box.
$114 at Amazon after promo code

    • I love the Classic Laddie and was so happy to get PC for under $90 recently after Cashback etc but was a little disappointed, it seemed to lack depth for me.

    • Bruichladdich used to be my favourite distillery, untill Jim McEwan retired. I think I have close to 100 bottles of McEwan era bottles, including signed bottles of Octomore Orpheus, PC7 and Legacy V. I haven't bought any Laddies since because the new guy is shit.

    • What promo code?

      • 10PRIME it's in the listing (probably need Prime)
