Need to replace our Phillips XXL that stopped turning on, it has served well but very expensive to replace. I was shopping around and found this for a good price, reviews are mixed but mostly positive from what I have read.

  • The 5.7l one would be a better choice if you're after a Philips style replacement.

    • I was initially looking for a Phillips style replacement but kind of like the versatility of this model, much easier to cook chips and pizza, my only concern is capacity of the barrel cooking chips.

    • +2

In what ways the grill/oven style better than the bucket style? (sorry only just learning the lingo)

      • +2

They are more like a normal oven

Easier to put things like pizza in.
They have shelves so you can add layers of things.

        • +3

Why would anyone who already have an oven buy this "air fryer" which isn't an actually air fryer but rather a desktop mini oven?

          • +13

@mrau: They heat up in seconds and cost a fraction of what a large oven costs to run.

          • @mrau: They can be used outside, such stops the house heating up in summer, and stops it smelling

  • +1

Much easier to clean and better space usage than Phillips one!

    • The Phillips was horrible to clean, no way to get to the top to properly clean around the element.

      • Thats on my to do list.
Dissasemmble the fryer to fully clean it, mine is full of grease

        • They are a very sealed style unit, I tried but wasnt able to without fear of breaking it.

          • @eggaz: I ran into this issue when mine became a cockroach nest. Had to just stop using it because I couldn’t clean them out. Such a waste

      • God… It is what my future XL looks like then.

        • Yeh. It smokes everytime i use it . Very annoying

          • +1

@easternculture: @easternculture : Are you referring to plastic burning smell? I had this issue with my unit. I called their customer service and they advised me to do a pre-burn at 200C for 15 to 20mins and clean the unit and repeat it 3 to 4 times. Once I did it, I never had the issue. If it still smells then you need to get a replacement as the unit is faulty. Insta pot is happy to replace it for free. I had a mate who got his replaced free of cost.

  • Correct name is Instant Pot* Vortex

    • Thanks I have updated the title.

  • +1

It has pretty much replaced my oven

    • Our airfryer did the same thing, we are finding it hard to go without since oir Phillips stopped working.

    • Same here.

  • +1

    but very expensive to replace.

I picked up one for $234…

    • Yes great p4ice on that unit, I missed out on the cash back offer. Hoping this one does a great job as a replacement.

  • +2

I have this one and use daily. Very happy with my purchase

    • Thanks, was a little unsure about buying this one, we were so reliant on our Phillips XXL. Do you cook chips, and if so whats the capacity the barrel holds?

      • You can easily put chips into the barrel for up to 2-3 people. I advise you to get the 10L model as it's a good size. You can bake a whole chicken in this oven. It's easy to clean, compared to the standard shape of an air fryer.
This one makes a little bit more noise compared to a Phillips air fryer, but that's not a problem for me.

        • Thanks for the info, yes ordered the 10L, its a shame about the noise, the Phillips was quite loud too.

  • These type used to be selling at around $99. Has prices gone up? Speaking generally about this particular design and size, not any brand specifically.

    • +1

      This brand? Dont think so

    • Kogan have one similar for $99 and Kmart $119, but not the same.

      • 'similar'

        • +1

Yes, the Kmart was is a little bit larger and higher power while the fan on this one is stronger. Touch panel on the Kmart one works better.

The rotary thing on this one is like the older version of the Kmart one, newer Kmart ones have a revised mechanism which is more hidden and does not collect fat which needs cleaning.

Not a huge amount between them.

    • 4L has been around $80 but this 10L one has been $199 on sale

  • Bought one 6 months ago and use it almost daily. Great bit of gear.

  • Works well. Great for cooking roast pork belly etc. the capacitive touch buttons are garbage though. Have to very precisely thumb them not just use the tips of your fingers.

    • Agree on the buttons!, thought maybe ours was just a bit dodgy…

  • +2

you can get a 12L turbo cooker (17L when using the ring) for less than half the price of this off of bunnings.

  • We also have this. Use it fsily to cook for a family of four. Does really good chips in the rotating cage

  • +1

If airfryers keep getting bigger, fancier, and more expensive they will eventually start selling fan forced ovens as "air fryers".

    • +1

Pretty much already do, several 25L ones around.

    • Our fan forced oven has nothing on our air fryer

    • +1

my parents got a new oven recently and it has an "air fry" setting… so yeah, it's already happened :P

    • +1

New good ovens can air fry, so yes they do

      • +1

Do they heat up as quickly

  • +5

I have one of these and it does everything it claims to do - but is the loudest appliance I have short of the blender.
You don’t need the beep to tell you it’s done, the relief at the return of peace and quiet is enough.

  • We just bought the 5.7l one ($113). Much better choice imo. Although we also have the breville smart oven, so I suppose maybe this one is supposed to be a combination of the two. Either way, I'm not really sold on this one.

  • -1

reviews are mixed but mostly positive

So they're mostly positive, not mixed

    • +2

They are a mixed, but mostly positive - both are correct ways to describe.

      • -3

Honestly, it's either mixed, or (mostly) positive, can't be both.
You can say 'better than average', 'slightly positive', you cant use two ratings to describe one lol

        • +2

          Just because it’s mixed doesn’t mean it’s 50/50

          • -3

@jjno41: That's like saying something is 50/50 but almost 60/40, lol
As i said, slightly positive is the correct way

            • +1

@nikoris: Most people gave good reviews, less people gave poor reviews. Therefore, mixed but mostly positive.

  • +3

Another happy owner, shelves give so many options compared to baskets.

eg Chips up top, fish in foil on bottom, give the chips 2 minutes then put fish on lower rack, 7 minutes later crispy chips and moist fish.

Dont bother with the rotating basket unless a big batch required as chips cook perfectly on the top shelf

Can fit a whole pizza in no problems.

Much easier to clean too especially with removable door

Negs would be the noise and unresponsive buttons

    • Thanks for the review, glad I purchased.

    • +1

Can fit a whole pizza in no problems.

You haven't seen a Costco pizza

    • Mine arrived today and the buttons seem to be ok, although I get what you mean on press, regarding the noise it is much quieter than the Phillips XXL, so far am really happy with the purchase, now time to cook some chips.

  • +1

Air fryers (oven style like this) are definitely a must have.

But has anyone worked out how to stop cheese flying around when making grilled cheese? Lowest shelf kinda works, first couple minutes are hit and miss. Sometime I microwave the he cheese on first, but this is annoying. Only real gripe!

    • Haha on tbe Phillips it was really annoying too. A toothpick through the cheese and bread worked really well.

    • This is one of the things I like about the "shelved?" airfryers like the 10l Instant pot, you can use one of the supplied grill trays as a windbreak on the top level so toppings like cheese or herbs don't get blown off your creation. Also stops anything flammable contacting the element

But has anyone worked out how to stop cheese flying around when making grilled cheese?

    • Where possible I make things without cheese and then butane torch the cheese on at the end.

  • +1

A few days ago bought it for $169 on Amazon. Still waiting for the order to arrive.

  • @eggaz have you contacted Phillips warranty? even if it’s out of warranty worth contacting them they have really good warranty service, don’t be surprised if they give you a replacement or offer you 50% off a new one, worth a try

  • Excellent airfryer. Got it during BF sales. Been using it 4-5times a week now.

Quick to cook and easy to put stuff in.

Cons: the basket is pain in the a* to clean.

    • I have the Kmart one. Wire trays are dishwasher safe, have never manually washed!

  • So will these things do everything a regular oven will do?
Can I roast meat in it?
Are they large enough to fit a pizza?

Our regular oven is old and takes about 30 minutes to get up to temperature.

    • You can roast meat as long as it fits in. This one should fit a pizza but most won’t be large enough. An air fryer will heat up in minutes.

  • I believe Breville airfryer oven is better option

    https://www.breville.com/au/en/products/ovens/bov860.html?sk…

    • +1

I believe Breville airfryer oven is better option

The Breville costs 3 times as much, what makes it 3 times better?
You do realize this is OzB?;)
