Belkin SurgePlus 8 Outlet 2 USB Surge Protector Powerboard $48.74 @ Bunnings (Pricematch $46.30 @ Officeworks)

940

One of the cheaper prices I've seen in recent times, although suffering the effects of inflation when compared to almost 3 years ago.

Amazon has it for the same price here

YMMV with price beat at Officeworks; although their listed product code is BEBSV804AU, the parts number under Specifications is BSV804AU, and the packaging has BSV804au2M on it. I was successful in price beating it when I showed them the packaging and the Bunnings listing had the same product code.

Its $39 C&C if you have a TGG Commercial account.

    • +1

noticed the 6-port version was $22, so $44 for basically 12 ports if you don't care for the 2 USB ports.

      • Thanks. Getting 3 x 6ports. Realised I never really use more than 6 on a single board

      • it will be 11 ports if used together since 1 port will be used to supply board 2 with power

      • Where did you find that?

    • +1

Wish i had a TGG commercial account :(

      • You might have access through a workplace union

      • long shot, but if you are with Rest superfund, a TGGC account is a benefit they offer.

      • What is your super? If it's rest (which alot of default retailer) or sun super you can get.

  • +1

The ones I bought from TGGC for $39 (BSV804au2M) had a loose part inside it. Had to get them all replaced which was a bit of a pain as they were out of stock.
    Definitely hold onto your receipts.

Not Belkin branded, but cheaper for a reason tho, right?

    $28.79 after a coupon

You'd have to have rocks in your head to buy that

      • +2

The reviews are good but most people probably review it favourably as it works fine on arrival. Follow-up reviews 1 year later are going to be rare.

    • +1

Someone will need to break this down and have a first-hand account before we believe the claims.

Same price at amazon.au (plus free shipping with amazon prime or $39)

      Thanks, I've linked it above.

Beware these are the size of a freight truck and are hard to hide away.

  • +1

Own two of these. They are very large but seem to be high quality.

    • With loose parts inside.

      • +2

This was the case for 4 of the boards out of 7.
Apparently, the HEMIX powerboards also suffer from this issue as well.

      • Not on mine! I would have mentioned it. That's annoying though and does not instil confidence.

      • Mine well the 6 outlet version never came with any loose parts inside. Damn i missed out. However it wasn't bought from TGG or Bunnings.

    Ahh yes the surfboard

This or the cyberpower? It's currently $37 on Amazon.

    https://amzn.asia/d/e7wZuLz

    • Cyberpower is smaller. I'd say Belkin is better, but pretty huge.

    • Its currently selling for $29 at Scorptec if you can pick up. https://www.scorptec.com.au/product/power-&-chargers/power-b…

      • +1

Price beat Scorptec at Officeworks for $27.55

      • +5

Don't get Cyberpower! Got 3 of them and they all make static sounds when plugging in or moving the plug slightly. Doesn't inspire confidence

        • +1

Sounds like a loose wire causing sparks. I'd get rid of that rubbish ASAP. No powerboard should ever make a noise.

          • @hollykryten: I get spark sound from all the Jackson power boards. Chuck them out in the bin where they belong.

    • +1

Belkin has 900 Joules of surge protection while the Cyberpower has 2750

    Surfboard Edition

      with wipeout protection.

    • +1

These do have weird fins on the back and I could not figure out how to wall mount them.

      • Fins are there so the powerboard is stable when floating on water!

  • Anyone heard ab monster brand in Harvey norman. $24 after 50% discount .

Bought a Heymix powerboard recently and happy with it, decent quality also. Available for $39.99 currently.

    • +2

That should be avoided based on this comment:
      https://www.ozbargain.com.au/comment/12996125/redir

      • +1

Wow that's pretty damning. Miswiring active and neutral is just dangerous. Can't believe Heymix products can even be sold with an error like that.

        • What is so hard to believe? Their name is Hey“mix”.

        • I'm not convinced that ToobsAU summation is correct.

Heymix powerboards were SAA certified so can obviously be sold and operated in Australia. If they were THAT bad they should have failed.

          Belkin certification
          https://i.imgur.com/B5Xxd9u.png

They both use the same approval numbers for different products.

          • @Vladdo: Some of the claims should be fairly easy to verify. We just need a motivated user to inspect their Heymix board.

            • @ihfree: I have 4 of them but even if I opened 1 up, I have no idea what I'm looking at .. I can only assume that the SAA certification process is correct and that they are perfectly safe.

              • +1

@Vladdo: The certification process isn't fool proof. As an example, products can be changed after certification.

But hey, whatever helps you sleep at night.

                • -1

@ihfree: You could argue that against Belkin.. etc..

I just don't see how any definitive conclusion can be drawn from 1 post. If these things are notoriously bad as they're made out to be, surely we'd hear of house fires, melted cables/housing, half burnt power boards, destroyed/surged electronics etc. You only have to look at the recent 4090 (user created) fiasco to see how quickly how a dodgy powerboard would hit the spotlight.

                  • +1

@Vladdo: Brands like Belkin have a reputation to uphold and are much more likely to follow the rules. Belkin has a connected equipment warranty on their boards. Given how long Belkin have been around, reports of issues are reasonably low to the point where Belkin is a reasonably safe bet.

Another big difference is a user hasn't just reported issues with multiple models. There are also many alleged issues with chargers from the brand by Ozbargain users(usual caveat around verified purchases).

The missing features are things which don't affect day to day operation such as potentially missing surge protection. If you can't trust the surge protection, you may as well be buying the cheapest basic boards.

      • Was the Heymix item reported to ACCC Product Safety? Didn't see a comment on it in that thread

  • -3

Bought just now, then cancelled, and ordered heymix 65W PD 8 outlet board even with it's varied reviews as i wanted more USBs with more power afterall.

  • Stack with Westpac 15% cashback

  • +1

Don't buy this. It's huge as, and not a lot of spacing between the sockets, especially the 4 opposing ones. Plug something chunky in there like a Google Home or Amazon device and good luck putting anything next to it or opposite it. I'm sure it's a quality board though, just the size and socket spacing limits its usage for me.

    • +6

The board is huge, they had plenty of room to space the sockets out…not sure why they didn't

      • +1

Exactly, there's more than enough space for them to space them out. Don't bother with the USB ports either… way slow!

I regret buying mine for $27 on sale from Amazon ages ago. So huge, it's hard to find somewhere to stick it behind an entertainment unit.

    • +2

      Which one would you recommend?

  • -2

Historical low is $20, next best is $37.
Still $10 more than the 2nd best.

  • +2

I have two of these can recommend. Really tidy up the space and protects my cables from kicking and surges.

  • Is it ever necessary to update these unless there’s a problem? I still have these dick smith ones from this deal years ago (https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/153144). Fairly sure I impulse bought them along the the ozb crowd. Didn’t realise it had been that long

    • I bought 2 of them
One died 2 years ago. Other going strong
Also have few of these belkins

    • I am using a belkin power boards bought in another country and still going strong after 10 years

  • I love my Belkin boards that I have scattered around the house, yes they are big and bulky but they come come with a connected a connected equipment warranty(is this still valid?) I have had them for over 15 years and have not had an issue. They are hidden behind the entertainment units or behind the home office desk so the size is not an issue.

  • Perfect use for the $50 Bunnings voucher for order cancellations on the Karcher sweeper

  • If 5 outlets are connected to this powerboard, if you connect a sixth electrical appliance, do you turn the main switch off before connecting the 6th one?

    • Is there a joke here? Say you have 3 outlets and you connect a fourth appliance?

      Most people wouldn't.

      • Which is why I could not understand this product get a lot of approval from ozbargainers, particularly the one with surcharge protection. I personally prefer using an outlet with individual switch. For example, my powerboard connects to a kettle and a induction cooker, I could turn on the particular outlet when I am using one of them. Or in the living room, if I need to charge the vacuum, I will just turn the outlet switch on or switch it off when I am not using. My real question is how does an ozbargainer use this one with no individual switch.

        • I have one behind the television and another behind my computer. I very rarely add or remove devices. When I do, I generally don't turn the board off or the power switch.

  • +2

Make sure you measure out the space before buying one… this thing is a lot bigger than it looks
They don't call it the surfboard for no reason

  • +1

I hate the massive size of this thing, but I do appreciate that it has a 2m long power cord, which not every powerboard has.

  • +1

I have three of these. Two workstations and one TV setup. Does the job well. I'm loathe to use them elsewhere due to thier size. I may get one from TGGC as a backup.

  • Sorry bout the dumb question, but what is so special about this one, seems pretty popular looking about the votes. I wanna buy a 6 port, but wondering if it's worth spending the extra bucks for this one or buy a chepo clik one from Bunnings.

    • Well you get a quality build. Built to last. Has good surge protection. Couldn't say the same for the cheap Click powerboard be built cheap.

      • You forgot to mention Belkin's Connected Equipment Warranty.

  • I've had this for several years, hasn't caught fire yet so all good. Nice to know if lightning hits, your hardware could/should be saved.

The one feature that annoys me is that that the spaces are very close together, 1 or 2 giant plugs will half your slots. Since then I always buy the power boards with extra spacing in-between.

    • From what I have read, this isn't going to protect your devices from lightning but it may allow you to replace them at somebody else's cost. If lightning can get from the sky to the ground, you can guarantee it can get from the outside of your house through all the wiring pretty damn easily.

  • Curious, if i got the one port “travel adaptor” and plugged in a 4 port power board, how would the protection be different?

    Thanks

  • Price matched online through Bunnings live chat for $43, went in to pay for it and seems like they price matched their own price and sold it to me for $39

    • How were you able to get the price beat? Did you use the Amazon listing?

      • Yeah linked the amazon listing during the live chat and thay matched it and beat it by 10% making it $43 think the lady at the front desk mistakenly matched the price again and took another 10% off making it $39

  • Do these have holes on the underside for mounting on walls/furniture?
