I thought it said Guinness at first… I can see that having a much greater attraction ;)

  • Is this the same as any other fitness deal, free 30 day membership, unsupervised? If it was with a trainer to help for at least 1-2 sessions it it be worth it.

      what other deal?

  • Wow Thank you so much for this !! Was deciding to join or not but this this gym or not but this trial will help. ! Thanks !

I got a text message a few weeks ago from Genenis saying I would get 30 days free and to come in.

When I went there they said I had to sign up that night in order to get the 30 days

IT'S A CON TO GET U IN THERE

  • Can someone confirm if it is really 30 days free, no strings attached?

Last time I tried one of these, Genesis wanted me to sign up with direct debit details, before they would give the free 30 days. I walked out, because direct debit means they can take whatever they want from your account, even "by mistake".

Last time this happened I went in and they said I had to sign up, and I could get a refund after 30 days if I did not like it.

I suspect they will "accidentally" forget to refund, then it will be up to you to pay the necessary fees to launch an investigation and get your money back.

      • +1

Exactly. They will probably make your life a misery trying to reclaim the money that they "accidentally" debited from your account.

Do what I do when I sign up for "free trials".

Create a new savings account that comes with a Debit Mastercard/Visa. If you have an online saver account you're already set.

The card acts like a Credit Card except it's using your own funds instead of borrowing from the bank. There won't be any interest charged or annual fees (pick the right bank and there won't be monthly fees either), and the only amounts that can be deducted is what's in your account.

So if it's linked to your online saver account, then put all your money into your online saver account (or other account) and leave only the amount you need to pay whenever you use your (credit/debit) card. So let's say you need to make a purchase for $50, you transfer $50 from your main or online account into this savings account then you use your debit card like you would a credit card.

With these free trials which will automatically charge you at the end of the trial if you don't ring up and cancel before then, just don't leave any funds in there. They must accept your card even if there's no money in there, because they don't attempt to bill you until the end of the trial period (or when they do it "accidentally").

        • So it wouldn't "bounce", whereby you have insufficient funds and the bank charges you a dishonour fee?
Seems a bit of a hassle to effectively keep zero dollars in your account but having to transfer funds over every time you need to purchase something on EFTPOS.

        • No.. just as it wouldn't "bounce" when you try to use your credit card online and the payment is rejected because you've reached your limit.

At least I've never been charged a dishonor fee.

If you need to purchase using EFTPOS (savings/cheque), just use your normal card that you're already using. Create a new account for your debit card, which you only use when you need to use it as a credit card but want to make sure there are not enough funds in there for an unauthorized or "accidental" transaction (e.g. signing up for free trials). NAB does not charge monthly fees for transaction accounts.

Any savings account already gives you the option of standard card or Debit card. The Debit card does not cost extra. The only difference between the cards is that the Debit card can be accepted as a Credit card but the standard handibank card cannot. At an EFTPOS machine you can press the "Credit" button with your debit card for added security. There's really no reason to opt for a standard bank card over a debit card.

Seems a bit of a hassle to effectively keep zero dollars in your account but having to transfer funds over every time you need to purchase something on EFTPOS.

If you're someone who puts money in an Online Saver account, then you are already used to doing this if you want to maximise your interest earned. You can transfer money between accounts instantly on your phone if you have internet access or on your home computer before you leave. You do not need to wait until the next business day for the transfer between your accounts to go through.

If you're putting all your money in an every day transaction account, then you're not getting any interest on your money. IMO, it's worth the hassle if you have a few thousand in there.

In my case, I have an offset account for my home loan so all of my savings go in there to offset interest. But I do have a separate account with Commsec where I used to trade shares. For no cost or monthly fee they give you an online saver account linked to a transaction account, and I use that account (which is empty) as my debit card whenever I don't trust someone to cancel my free trials for me.

        • You should work for one of the "big 4", lostn. You have good knowledge about banking. Very easy to understand :)
