OB'ers may wish to first peruse the recent thread for the 14TB version of this drive - see towards bottom of that thread re possible warranty and manufacturing date issues -
    https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/747705

Highlighted issues of course do not necessarily apply also to this 16TB drive, but does make me wonder where such stock may have been lying around, and for how long. Could also explain why the pricing has been discounted as it has.

    • I had the14tb one from last deal and didn't worry about the warranty, since it sold by Amazon. Back to many years ago when we didn't need to pay GST for purchased from overseas market, I bought a Asus router then damaged with hardware issue, Amazon UK refunded full price because of its in warranty still.

Amazon love to throw these bare drives in unpadded sleeves and toss them in the mail. Done it myself, and the courier dropped it on the concrete right in front of me.

YMMV, but I’d never order a bare drive from Amazon again.

    • You say that as I'm awaiting 2 WD reds that may ship together from US….

I get the feeling I should run tests on them but I doubt it'll pick up anything and they'll just die a week later knowing me.

      But who needs backup…

Run something like checkdisk. Its free and usually quick. Will tell you if theres any bad sectors in the drive.

        • Slightly off topic, however can you run checkdisk on drives in a NAS?

@deepfriedchips: If I'm not mistaken the NAS likely has its own checks. Maybe not as good, but you'd think they should be OK too.

      • I just received a WD Red Plus from Amazon US. It was DOA. Wouldn't even power up.

Yeah I remember when Amazon used to triple box drives and overkill package just about everything. Now expensive fragile items are just tossed in a bubble bag and sent across the world. That and their customer service going from the best in the business to being absolutely horrible, I now avoid Amazon for fragile items.

    • Yea iv had both - loose drive (returned) and a WD drive that was in a nice foam padded box (no doubt from the original supplier)

    • Is there anywhere else to get HDDs anywhere near the price of Amazon? Tried the recent group buy but it fell through…

      • Not that I’ve found, I’ve given up and resorted to shucking again.

  • $28.78 / TB

The 18TB has slightly better $/TB ratio:

  • Too bad you missed out on the 18tb ironwolf pros for about $440 each from Amazon. That was about 2-3 weeks ago. I ended up getting the last two in stock so couldnt post it here. When they came back in stock price was higher

  • Ordered one! thanks OP. Looks like has to be shipped to US in case of warranty issues. Can anyone confirm?

    • Both 18tb Ironwolf Pros I bought for $440 each were bad from Amazon global. Came up with disk errors after tests. Cleared them then tried copying data, disks were freezing during it and kept rebooting. One disk even reformatted itself. I get the feeling that alot of these Seagates were known to have really poor quality and they've decided to sell them for extra cheap. Hoping that they can get away with a bigger percentage of people that will keep them. Amazon are really good for returns so wouldn't worry. The problem is you'd rather get a drive that is known not to have problems. After years of not buying seagate for their reliability issues, I stupidly assumed it was better now.

  • Currently sitting at $442.92! (I assume due to exchange rate changes?)
