  • How repayable is this game?

    • +7

Very. Multiple endings, builds/variations, pathways to complete the game. Excellent replay value imo.

      • +3

Just started my third play through on a brand new character, going for the unga bunga smack them down build.

My first character was at level 200 and everything just died too quickly lol

    • +4

Does it matter when it's going to take you an eternity to finish it once?

      • I've finished it once a couple of months after launch, then left it alone.

    • Unfortunately I've hacked my way through to 70/80%, playing again as a caster will change the whole dynamic upside down.

    • Oh my goodness the game just goes on forever. I'm only about 30 hours in and I'm only level 70 and not even out of first big map yet. I'd say I'll need to do 100-200 hours minimum before finishing the game and then I could go back and do it a lot quicker.

If you don't like dark souls type games then it might not be for you. I do tend to get a bit bored creeping around for minimal runes. It isn't like diablo where there is tons of unique items dropped and that keeps it fun. I still have all the original gear I started with because nothing else is much better (Samurai class).

  • Is this game friendly for beginners in this genre?

    • +6

      No, don’t buy

    • +6

      yes

    • +4

Nope haha. I had no clue what I was doing. Had to follow guides. And even after that I didn't really like it.

    • +4

Absolutely not, but that's half the draw. Souls games are dialled up to 11 in difficulty and just how utterly ruthless they can be to the slightest wrong move.

    • +6

It is the most beginner friendly game of the series due to it being open world you can go do something else if you get stuck on difficulty, level up and come back.

    • +2

I would say yes, but that the game expects you to use your head and explore elsewhere when you're being too overwhelmed by a chosen path. There's lots of conveniences made for the player to have an easier time in combat and while exploring areas if they want to use them.

The side stories are often hard to see through in their entirety but that's just a normal part of these games, those stories are usually explored by players with outside help (A guide, info from friends, messages left by players) and saved for repeat playthroughs

    • +4

definitely one of the hardest games ive ever played. no difficulty setting either. Still watching guides now even at level 50

    • +1

Very beginner unfriendly, but every From Software game is. Can't get into any of them.

    • It's the easiest Souls game which are massively overrated in terms of difficulty.

    • Not as difficult and punishing as most nes games back in the day.

PS4 and XBX have been matched on Amazon at $59

  • +5

Word on the street is buy ps4 version then do free upgrade. Ps5 version has some issues and people can prefer to run the ps4 version on ps5 instead of downloading the free upgrade

    • I thought that was a launch thing. Are there still issues with the PS5 version?

      • +3

Played the whole thing, around 200 hours (PS5 version). With VRR compatible display, you’ll have most of the game between 48-60fps so it’s manageable and fairly solid. WITHOUT VRR display though, honestly you may feel it’s too choppy.

Can’t transfer PS5 save to PS4 version though…so you have to commit immediately.

Would recommend to play PS4 version on PS5 for a much more stable 60fps experience, at the minimal expense of foliage quality.

        • You would have thought a AAA title running like this would have influenced all the GOTY awards but seems it wasn't the case.

          • @Gregors510: Yeah, I think it speaks to the idea that there’s such a large proportion of the console gaming community content with 30fps.

Devs enabling custom graphics settings, like they have on PC generally, would be the best solution IMO!

Still, the game was absolutely fantastic.

            • @Dealhunter967671: I've been meaning to give it a go, I'm not one who likes that kind of game normally but I'm told you dont have to brute force your way through it - maybe down the line, need to knock off God of War first!

              • @Gregors510: You definitely don’t, if you can’t do something, run away and do something else. Most of the time you can go back later! Some quests have an order or structure to them that break this, but generally mini bosses can be avoided.

Plenty of people can finish this game without “leveling up” as well, otherwise known as “SL1/RL1 play throughs” because the gear and your skill through learning will allow you to overcome anything.

Also, I started Elden Ring after finishing Nioh 2 for the 3rd time and was swearing at how laggy, non responsive and ridiculous the combat was - because Nioh is so damn fluid and smooth. Turns out, after about 5-10 hours of gameplay, I got the hang of it, and it all just “clicked”!

        • Play it at 1080p and it'll run heaps better

          • @serpserpserp: I thought the same thing would help - then I read up and watched some technical reviews on YouTube, forcing 1080P/1440P output from the console settings does NOT impact the performance of the game, as it still renders natively at ~1800P-2160P internally anyway.

Best solution is play in order of preference: PC <- PS4 version on PS5 <- PS5 VRR <- PS5/XSX

    • And you can use the ps4 version on both consoles. You cannot use the ps5 version on ps4.

I genuinely want to play this game, like so bad, however, I play most games on PC & I don't do too well using controllers. But from all accounts I've seen, the PC port is disgustingly bad (I may be wrong but it's still essentially the case after the patches it's had) and the keyboard/mouse controls implementation is very, very bad.

    • +4

Hope you overcome that self-limiting language around controller use. I believe in you!

      • +4

lol, I've tried it but I grew up as a PC gamer so my hand/eye co-ordination only works when using a mouse/keyboard. I just feel all like I am completely garbage on any game that requires controllers.

        • I was the same with FPS games like COD - life long PC player. The trick is to set the stick sensitivity really low, play for a while, then slowly increase as you train yourself. Top tip that was super helpful

    • Everyone says this, but I've finished every game in the souls series on m&kb with no issues. Maybe you need to change the mapping on a couple of keys but it's no big deal, definitely not bad and certainly not bad enough to warrant buying a controller.

    • +1

As a K&M guy myself, can vouch that the Xbox X controllers are pretty great to use on PC. It isn't perfect, but very playable.

The game is somewhat easier if you've played a Soulsborne game in the past. There's a serious learning curve required regardless. I started playing the game almost a month after a friend got it on release. I struggled for about 3-4 weeks (for those who have played it, I couldn't beat Margit until I was level 60 - Godrick was a similar challenge at level 80), before I finally hit my straps and started to progress through the game further. Hit another wall towards the end of the game (bloody fire giant was a pain in the bum!), after that point I steamrolled through the rest until I reached the Elden Beast finale. Luckily beat the final boss battle when they mistakingly glitched it during one of the patches (made the boss far easier lol). I ended up leap frogging my friend who gave up on it after I'd finished it 6 more times haha,

In saying that my subsequent playthroughs were significantly easier because of how over leveled I was at that point in time. From then on I kept challenging myself to see how fast I could get through the game (made it up to Journey 7/ NG+7 before I finally was like yep time to move on to other games…. so I moved on to the pc version hahaha. In comparison once I was used to the game, I flew through it on pc - beat Margit when I was only level 15).

I'm tempted to replay it again on Playstation - have a few more days before the digital version goes back to full price, the temptation is there.
