Intel 520 180GB SSD Retail Box - $245 Pick up or + $15 Shipping @ PCDIY

120

INTEL 520 OEM 60GB/120GB for $95/$149
INTEL 520 RETAIL 60GB/120GB/180GB for $98/$165/$245

I found these prices by accident, as they don't appear on Staticice or Shopbot. These are the cheapest AU prices I know of.

The cheapest I can find a Retail 180GB for is $284 + shipping. MSY has the Retail 120GB for $169 (at least I think it's Retail) but no higher capacity.

PCDIY do not have 240GB however. (If you're after that one, the cheapest I can find is PCCaseGear for $349 (+ shipping) Retail, or Umart for $338 OEM).

OEM drives include just the drive. Retail boxes include the drive, mini-CD with installation and warranty documents, drive bracket and screws, SATA cable, SATA power cable, USB to SATA cable, protective sleeve, screwdriver. It's worth noting that the OEM version does not include screws, and the screws that the intel drive uses are slightly off standard size and for some pc cases you may have problems screwing it in because the case screws are a little bit too little or too big.

I think the 180GB Retail is an excellent deal, coming to $1.36 per GB which is better than the unit price at any other capacity. Amazon sells the Reseller Kit (not Retail box) for $225, but won't ship to AU, and a freight forwarder would charge more than $20 to ship it to you.

PCDIY has stores in Box Hill (VIC), Auburn (NSW) and Adelaide (SA). If you don't have access to these stores, obviously I would never suggest paying $15 for shipping, but the 180GB still comes out cheaper than anywhere else (that I know of).

  • Pcdiy delivers?

According to their site, they take online orders and delivery is a minimum $15. The package is small so I don't think they will charge more than that. But out of principle I would never pay $15 for a package delivered in Australia, especially of that size unless I had no choice. Still it's cheaper after shipping than the cheapest I can find on Staticice or Shopbot.

  • good price for a good drive.. :) best price around for someone looking for an intel drive

    • About time!, excellent news.

  • How do these compare to the OCZ Vertex 4?

    • more stable… but you pay allot more for it

      • +2

I believe Vertex 4 uses the Marvell controller, which is the same one Intel 510s used before they were phased out, and the same ones Crucial M4 use. These are very reliable though not as fast as Sandforce. Vertex 3 and 520 use Sandforce which are the fastest but known for less reliability than Marvell, although among Sandforce SSDs, Intel's Sandforce drivers are the most reliable of the lot. Intel is known for their reliability. On SSD statistics, they are the least RMA'd of the all the manufacturers.

In other words, buying Intel, you're paying a premium for reliability.

        • How dodgy is it that on intel's website they have excluded Samsung SSD's…Intel marketing at it again… We all remember the Pentium 4 being sooo much faster then The Athlon 64 according to intel.

i think in 2012 we will see Samsung at number 1 least RMA'd

I think there are issues with warranty on OEM drives? not the full 5 years?

    also this http://www.pcdiy.com.au/notice.htm

    • You'll have to place the order via email and arrange something with them. Or maybe ask them to COD it to you. Better to buy it in store if you're not too far away.

As far as OEM warranty. I haven't heard anything about that. I thought it was still 5 years, but to be safe I'd buy the Retail. It's not that much extra, and you may need the things it includes.

  • New low price for 240GB: $287 + $11-16 shipping @ HB Outlet.

    http://www.hboutlet.com.au/catalog/intel-ssd-240gb-520-serie…

Quantities are low so they will need to be ordered in for you which could take time.

This is the best price I've ever seen, because PCCG sells it for $349 + shipping.
