How Has Your Experience Been with Refurbished Phones?

Hi all,
I've been considering purchasing a refurbished iphone 13 from either ozmobiles or reebelo.com allowing me to save a few $100 as opposed to buying a brand new.
Can anyone comment on any experiences from these websites, or should I really reconsider buying a refurbished to begin with?

I think buying refurb is fine especially for iPhones. Support for iPhones generally last for 7-9 years (the iPhone 6/6s just lost support a few months ago, after being released 7 years ago). You should still hopefully see support for the 13 for another 6 years at the minimum.

However, iPhone 13 128GB refurb ($989) may not be worth it as you could probably find a bargain for a brand new for the same price as a refurb - Telstra Day last year had brand new for $999.

  • Might be worth cross-checking the price directly with Apple's refurbished offerings. I'm the type that would pay a little more to buy direct for peace of mind than take a risk on third party for slight saving.

    • I thought apple didn’t sell refurb phones in Aus?

      • They don't. I'm not sure if they used to like 8-10 years ago?

A while back a mate of mine worked at Apple and gave me a refurbished phone when my phone's power button was playing up (I think by then it was out of warranty too), worked fine.

Nothing wrong with a refurbished iPhone, I would prefer to go that way instead of buying brand new as long as it's been refurbished with care.

  • Just buy an iphone with AppleCare+ . I bought a few 2nd hand iPhone with AppleCare+, the phone was a year old and was 50% off. If you don’t like it sent it in for replacement and you get a newly refurbished phone for $150. It’s a very good deal. I think.

I'd pay the extra $100 for a brand new one. Life's too short, phones are too important.

Im only buying refurbished phones from now on.
Purchasing a flagship phone 1-2 years old for a fraction of the price is a no brainer for me. No way im paying over a thousand for a new phone.
I like Greengadgets, never had an issue.

  • I was on the fence about buying refurbished for a long time. Finally bit the bullet and got a 13 Pro Max from mazuma last month. It was a "Good" grade (this is like third level on their scale), so I expected some scratches on screen/back. But the phone I got seemed almost new condition. Would definitely vouch!
Also, I needed it urgently as I was travelling overseas. The seller was helpful and provided quick updates on its dispatch, and I actually got the phone less than 2 days from order during Christmas time.

  • I loved my refurbished Samsung S9 Edge which was bought 2 years after date of manufacture. Battery was still going OK after 2 years of ownership (light use for a day before recharging at night).

If you are an impulsive buyer or don't look after phones then the refurbished mobile industry is a Win-Win. When you get sick of your phone can sell it off to a refurb business and repeat.

If you can wait for a good OzBargain deal on the superceded model then the price difference is worth buying new instead of refurbished. Main reason is that New phones come with warranty so the small difference is worth it rather than gambling. This better suits owners who look after their phones and don't want to buy another phone till after warranty.

  • I'd suggest including Phonebot on your supplier shortlist. There's no risk purchasing late-model used iPhones - Apple honours the warranty from date of original purchase.

  • I've actually heard of reebelo, my workplace purchased a few Macbook Pros from them. I didn't look at the Macbook Pros myself but they seemed to work fine and there were no issues.

Reviews on Product Review for the website are quite good too.

From their website they have a 14 day return policy (like Apple). Why not just give it a shot?

  • Just beware that Reebelo is a marketplace; Ozmobiles and Phonebot are resellers. If you care about the rated condition, go with the resellers.

    • oh wow, thanks for this; I wasn't aware that Reebelo is a marketplace.
