WD Elements Desktop HDD 12TB Black $299 + Delivery ($0 to Metro/ C&C/ in-Store) @ Officeworks

1400

not sure if this is their usual price - seems cheap(is) @ $24 per TB

and the price jumps up nearly 300 bucks for the extra 2tb

I bought a couple - so it definately works, not sure when/if it expires though, and I guess you could find someone that does price beat (not sure who though, as I usually use officeworks for that ), to get even cheaper

It was posted before, not sure why it is marked as expired, I've seen it at that price this week too…

If an expiry date is not set on a deal post, it will be automatically marked as expired after 45 days (90 days for freebies). It is the poster's responsibility to either set an expiry date, or report the deal to have it marked as 'long expiry' (never auto expire).

Long expiry set for this deal post.

Since this deal is staying up, obligatory - price match at JB and add a $1 item to get $40 off.

A lot of codes available in megathread.

    • +1

I've done just that. Thanks OP and CodeXD

    • Any decent cheap items to add at JBs? I’ve seen plenty of $5 2023 diaries

    • +5
      • can you teach us how to write these queries?:)

        • +6

Press space twice in the search bar and search.

Then customise the filter such as set min/max price.

    • +1

How do you get them to price match AND honour the code? I'd have thought you'd only be able to get the price match in-store, and only able to use the codes online?

      • +5

JB email says Redeem online or in-store by 8th January.

There is a barcode to scan for in-store.

You can ask for price match online via their chat and also ask them to add something $1 to cart (I don't think you can modify it yourself, or the rep have always said to ask them to add stuff). They'll send you a link to the checkout where you can use the perk code.

        • Didn't know they have live chat!

        • +1

Make sure both items are stocked before U talk to live chat for click n collect orders

    • I ordered 4 drives individual orders, the jbhifi chat guy Scott was happy to make it $300 each without adding anything more to cart. Even offered me if I need business team for bulk order.

    • Are these codes still working?

  • I have a 14tb HDD. What happens if I get this and put them into DS920+? Trying to get another 14tb but they all expensive atm.

    • Depends if you're setting up RAID or not.

      https://www.reddit.com/r/DataHoarder/comments/8n9klb/how_to_…
"For a normal RAID, you can RAID different sized drives together just like you can with same-sized drives. The only “gotcha” is that the RAID will treat all drives in the array as if they were all the same size as your smallest drive. For example, a RAID5 with a 2TB, two 4TB, and an 8TB drive will treat the array as a RAID5 array with four 2TB drives for a total usage capacity of 6TB (with 2TB used as protection and 10TB wasted).

Synology has their own RAID technology in addition to regular RAID on their machines, called SHR1 (similar to RAID5) and SHR2 (similar to RAID6) that allow for more efficient use of mix-capacity arrays. For the same example above using SHR, your total usable capacity would be 10TB (with 4TB used as protection and 4TB wasted)"

      • Thanks a lot, so technically I’m losing 2TB which looks acceptable when a 14tb is still expensive

        • +1

I have the DS 920 and DX 517(expansion unit) running in SHR.

IMO, if it’s personal use, JBOD is more economical. As long as you are aware of the risks and your machine stays in safe condition, it shouldn’t be a big issue.

    • +1

If you want to use a Raid1 array and put in this 12T drive, you will only get 12T of storage capacity.

    • I'd just be setting them up as one bigger 26tb and backing up externally.

Seems rediculous to me to waste it in a less optimal raid setup.

I haven't had RAID ever, just external backups for my Plex Server. I think RAID is grossly overrated for the average home user.

I know, people will disagree, but capacity is king for a Plex Server. Redundancy isn't.

      • Never run raid, but I use StableBit DrivePool. Great little Windows software. I reckon NAS boxes are way over-rated and priced. Don't know why you'd ever use one for home storage vs a PC.

        • +1

I'm happy to run mine solely as a Plex Server, nothing else on it. 4 8tb in a DS918.

Regular PC has a 3080 in it, so not exactly keen to have that running 24/7.

          Power usage in my case.

          • +1

@scuderiarmani: Agree, never keen on running PC 24/7 with current gaming PC with beefy GPU and CPU.

Personally just attaching a portable HD on the back of my router is sound. But most router these days like have strong WiFi but piss poor file transfer speed for attached HD. Keen to find a router with sound file transfer speed even without WiFi as I have APs around the house.

            • @Mouthsmasher01: I was looking for such a thing for years, I doubt it exists.

One router I recall had Plex built in but it was a compromise.

              • +1

@scuderiarmani: I am currently running this HDD as my main storage on a RPI4 with openmediavault and hosting a plex server on a shield, seems to be working pretty well.

    • @nelladream Check various combinations of HDD here
      https://www.synology.com/en-au/support/RAID_calculator

      • this is very useful!! Thanks heaps

    • This HDD is probably not designed to be run in a NAS system, right? So using it for NAS will probably wear it out faster and increasing risk of data loss?

      • There’s conjecture on what these drives actually are but I bought 4 in 2020, stripped them out into my PC and have only had one die on me so far.

        • 1 out of 4 died within 3 years ? Thats not good.

  • +4

    $24.917 per TB

  • It won't last long. mine broke in 4 months.

    • I pulled drives outta mine in recent times, a few varieties. The connectors never last long for me. Very minimal use too.

      • +2

What do you mean… you aren’t mean to be constantly replugging SATA connectors..

        • These are external…. I'm talking about the USB connection.

Only way to save it was use it internally.

          • @scuderiarmani: Ah that’s what you meant, the ordering your comment confused the heck out of me.

          • @scuderiarmani: The cable or the socket on the enclosure broke?

            • @Richardc: Sockets are faulty. I changed cables (and ports on pc).

They'd intermittently lose connection or not even get one to begin with… Or throw up an error.

Honestly, probably plugged in less than 20 times.

    • :( were you able to replace it? How was the warranty process?

    • +6

Mine 6 of them run 24/7 2 years now.

    • +1

If you got it at a local shop, bring it back under warranty. I know OW is good about just either replacing or refunding.

  • Jb Hi-Fi will price match - did it a week ago

  • Looking for a mid-long term storage solution for my iPhone videos and photos for myself and my wife. Would anyone recommend this external hard drive as a suitable solution?

    Any other (ideally, cheaper) recommendations?

    Much appreciated.

    • +1

As I said above, I used these sorta drives as backups, every few months plugging them in once to sync.

Connectors didn't last much more than a few years.

Drives are OK, so they got pulled out.

      Ideally you have atleast 2.

      • I have been using these drives since 2016 as backup drives and rotating them into a fire safe every month or so and never had an issue… used 4TB ones until late 2021 when I changed up to 12TB ones. Perhaps you were just unlucky…

        • 4 times an external enclosure played up with me.

Had the odd portable like that in the past.

Never had actual hard drive issues in 25 plus years with the exception of a WD NAS I had turning on and off every night that developed some bad sectors over a few years.

If your family’s entire photo/video library doesn’t exceed 50gb, iCloud would be the best option. For $1.49 a month, cheaper than a cup of coffee and you get a free vpn service called iCloud relay.

      • I’m using a 1TB iPhone, wife has a 256gb iPhone as well. We are constantly calling out storage so will definitely need a large hard drive.

        • +1

Definitely look into the iCloud option as it would provide a built in service whereas a hard drive will be incredibly cumbersome with several points of error.

HDD may seem like a better option at first but consider the lifespan of HDD/potential of error occurring/physical damage/etc.

          • @EnterTheShiftKey: Thanks for the suggestion but we’ve already near capped our 2tb icloud service, hence looking for a cheaper external hard drive option.

            • +2

@A female dog: Oof. Ok I’ve definitely underestimated. In that case, maybe ditch iCloud alltogether and invest in a NAS? once set up, it should auto upload your photos wirelessly.

Most importantly, it should be cheaper than 2tb iCloud after 2 years of use or so.

            • +1

@A female dog: If iCloud is working for you and you and your wife are sharing, you can get above 2TB by having an Apple One family plan which comes in at 2TB, and then adding an additional 2TB on for another $15 which will take you to 4TB.

              https://appleinsider.com/inside/icloud/tips/how-to-get-4-tb-…

Might be an option if Apple One is of interest.

I’m not sure if you can turn off family sharing for the additional 2TB so that each of you can get an extra 2TB, or if that has to be shared, but either way at a minimum there’s a way to double the capacity.

I do not recommend going to a NAS only solution. Make sure you have a cloud or offsite backup of some sort in case you have a fire or your NAS dies or data is corrupted. If you adopt a local option then maybe something like Backblaze is worth looking at which has unmetered backups. It’s not suitable as a network drive for everyday access and is purely focused on backup, but it’ll provide peace of mind.

              • @Smigit: @smigit, good advice.

I’m actually hoping to move away from iCloud option to an offline system as it’s significantly cheaper in the long run.

I am not super tech savvy so the idea of NAS systems kinda scared me anyway. Was just after a good, reliable and budget friendly external hard drive specifically for storing photos and videos.

                • @A female dog: Try synology NAS, they have pretty good softwares for photos and videos. I'm using them from more than 3 years and using it as automatic photos and videos backup, plex media server, note station, document backups etc. I'm running docker on it which opens up whole new world of self hosting apps to me like adblockers, audiobook server, music server, ebook server etc. NAS is not just for backup, you can use it as a home lab if your NAS supports docker.

      • I ended up just going iCloud. Turns out live photos + Windows is a pain in the ass.

The 10TB drive I ordered from Amazon got shipped bare. No additional packaging, They just attached the label onthe box and sent it across. Sukers. Better to buy from officeworks if you can. They also sent US adapter on the 10TB external HDD that was ordered from Amazon AU (not via US).

  • Shuckable?

    • +2

Yes, very easily. With some practice and understanding of how the shell works, you can just press down from on top and just pull the main housing out without breaking any tabs.

  • Can this be plugged to the router and used for shared storage?

    • Yes if you don't mind the transfer speed.

      • How slow of a transferspeed are we talking here?

        • +1

I have old Asus RT-AC68U, my transfer speed to HD attached to USB3.0 port is around 30MB/s, also during transfer my router CPU maxed out at 100%. I am not sure what you have got at moment, but from Dong's know how "Best 14 Router NAS Options of 2022: Add Some Cool Storage to Your Wi-Fi Today!", you need a beefy router to get around 100MB/s which just satisfy the point of normal Lan speed.

OMG after the most recent deal was posted on here and how I discussed my plans of combining lots of older external hdd's on to one/two/three main 10+tb hdds….. I actioned phase one of my plan and am already in the process of putting my 4K movies on one purchased 12tb HDD. And I paid almost $180 more than this price :( lol. Insert Jack Bauer DAMN IT here!!

    • How do you get this HDD into your PC? I've got about 6,500 movies spread across a few HDDs I'd like to copy onto one drive

      • +3

I really hope this isn't serious

      • +1

You should invest in a cheap NAS if you want to centralize your collection.

    • +1

Haha currently rewatching 24 and the DAMN IT fits your comment perfectly.

Great show, I finished my yearly marathon of the entire series just before Christmas (started it mid October - pretty much 9 seasons in 7.5 weeks!!).

  • Price match with jb and use perks offer ?

    • That's what I did last time.

  • Can Xbox games be stored here?

    • Yes, as for playing games off, would depend on the game/console.

      • Thank u

        • +2

To add, Series X and S titles can’t be run off the drive, but you can put them on the drive and copy them to the consoles built in storage to run them.

Older Xbox One, 360 or original Xbox titles will all run off the external drive just fine however on any Xbox system, it’s purely new titles that need the faster storage.

          Similar story for PlayStation.

          • @Smigit: Thank u for the additional info. My son has the x series. He has the smaller Xbox drive where he stored his Xbox 360 games but some of the new games are big.
He’ll need one to run the games off I think. Easier than swapping over all the time. Many thanks.

  • Anyone know what type/model of drive in it?

    • +1

Mine is WD120EDBZ-11B1HA0. White 7200rpm model.

    • Mine was WD120EMFZ 5400rpm helium filled

    • Bought two from jbhifi (price matched) and they're both WD120EDBZ-11B1HA0

  • does anyone know if they need to do the 3 pin trick?

    • +1

      I didn't, WD120EDBZ

      • cheers i got the same result :)

  • Can it be taken out of the case and used in a PC?

    • +1

      Yes, this is called shucking.

      • Thank you Caloz77.

So WD Elements Desktop HDD 12TB Black $299 is shuckable for use inside a desktop computer.

  • JBHifi price match -$40 with code. Thanks

Negioated with jb and got it down to $279 but I don't want it anymore, here it is for anyone that wants it, ends tonight.

    • Thanks for this, but it needs your phone number.

  • From what I searched its a CMR drive. Am I correct? Hoping to use it in NAS.

    • I have got 2 and they are running well in my new QNAP 2-bay NAS.
Here is some detail on the white label if you want to research further,
      MDL: WD450EDBZ-11B1HA0
      IU HA570

  • Hi There i bought two of them
    would like to say
    there are WDC WD120EDBZ-11B1HA0
    7200RPM
    White Label

    Work well

  • Got a few of these and built a home NAS raidz1 from my old computer over the weekend, it's so much nicer to have a relatively redundant NAS that's all in one place instead of multiple external hdds!

  • This has been out of stock for weeks.

    • Still in stock at Bathurst and one or two other locations, but none available for online shopping, so the deal is pretty much over.

      • Yeah, and JB is not price matching anymore because of the lack of stock.
