Op you might want to mention that to cancel you need to call.

    • I still have the ability to remove my payment information and stop auto billing would that not cancel once the one month is finished?

      • +4

cannot remove card details for this one. have to call and cancel.

        • +1

Use Revolut one-time disposable virtual card.

          • -1

@khell: Well that was a waste of time but at least we know now…

You cannot use Revolut single-use CC. Well you can, but only if you want to lose your $1. i.e. With my normal bank account Kogan doesn't actually take the $1 at the verification step. They just "reserve" $1 for a few days. So if for example I had $10 in my normal bank account, then I activate a Kogan SIM using the details of the card attached to that account, I still have my $10 "balance" but my "available balance" is now only $9. A few days later that $1 "reserve" Kogan put on my account expires so my "balance" AND "available balance" are both back to $10.

But with Revolut Kogan doesn't "reserve" the $1, they actually WITHDREW $1 at the verification step. So if you use the Revolut single-use CC to activate a SIM, Kogan cannot refund your $1 within 5 days because that "card" number was SINGLE-USE only. i.e. Because the card "no longer exists" they cannot refund to it, so you lose your $1.

            • +1

@[Deactivated]: Worked fine for me back in November: https://i.imgur.io/8uFf4bQ_d.webp?maxwidth=640&shape=thumb&f…

You also misunderstand what an authorisation is. If Kogan did not only "reserve" (authorise) as you wrote $1 but also proceeded to clear the transaction then that is an issue with KOGAN NOT Revolut. The $1 authorisation should have dropped off. That it did not is because KOGAN proceeded with the charge and has no relevance to the single-use nature of the card.

Single-use cards can also be refunded to. If Kogan told you they can't, that's BS.

              • -2

@khell: It doesn't matter which business the "issue" is with because they're the same 2 companies in both our cases: Kogan and Revolut. The way they both do things today is what matters. I'm merely updating people people subbed to the thread with the facts. And the fact is the Revolut single-use virtual card cannot be used in the way suggested, unless someone is happy to lose $1 every time they activate a Kogan SIM, or phone them to get their $1 back which defeats the purpose of using Revolut in the first place.

And no, you cannot receive a refund to a "single-use" virtual card. THAT is the real "BS" here. Why? Because Kogan taking $1 to activate your SIM = transaction number 1, and refunding $1 five days later would be transaction number 2. How many uses does a single-use virtual card have? Single. ONE. $1 out = single use now exhausted.

I know this because when you request a single-use virtual card a mock-up picture, a virtual card, appears displaying the required details like a real Mastercard, and remains on the phone screen, then disappears the moment you complete the SIM activation on the Kogan site.

The card has now gone forever, it's single use has been exhausted.

Five days later Kogan tries to refund your $1 but it will bounce back to them because the single-use card has expired. If you could put money back in using the same details, then a shady business could also make a second charge.

I know this because it's been over 10 days with no refund. And of course Kogan can only use the same CC details we gave them: which are the single-use virtual card details, whose single use was exhausted.

If you could receive a refund to the SAME virtual card you sent money from then it would be a dual-use virtual card.

Single-use cards can also be refunded to. If Kogan told you they can't, that's BS.

Can you get your $1 back? Sure. Automatically like a normal bank account that isn't single-use? NO. Otherwise it would have happened over 5 days ago. (We can't delete our bank details ourselves anymore, remember? So it's not like Kogan has "lost" the virtual card details.) So how then? By phoning Kogan to request your $1 back and giving them new account details to send the $1 to. Which defeats the purpose of using the single-use virtual card in the first place: to avoid phoning them.

So using Revolut's single-use virtual card does not solve the "just phone us to cancel" irritation. i.e. If you have to phone Kogan to get your $1 back, you may as well wait until the end of the month, and ask them to cancel the SIM at the same time as the $1 refund. So using Revolut solved nothing.

                • +2

@[Deactivated]: You're wrong on all accounts and do not understand how credit card processing or how Revolut single-use virtual cards work. I have had refunds processed on the single-use cards multiple times, as recently as 29 Dec 2022. Kogan are the ones authorising and processing the $1 transactions, instead of cancelling the authorisation after a few days AND NOT processing the transaction as they should be. The card disappearing from your screen is a system feature and has no relevance to whether or not the card can receive a refund.

                  Also: https://help.revolut.com/help/card-payments-withdrawals/refu…

You can believe what you want to believe, but you're still wrong.

        • Can you turn off "Auto Re-Charge" at all via the online account at least?

Is it just this latest batch of Code/Plans 40 GB that expire 31/01/2023 as I activated

a 40 GB sim few weeks ago ( expire 31/12/2022 ) and that was still normal/old system?

          • +1
            • @CVonC: Thanks. Got reading that further down, bummer.

No more cheap Kogan Mobile codes/sims/data for me then, the party is Over.

    • Can I port out before 30 days ?

      • +1

I ported out, and now I can’t log back in.

        • Hey mate, did Kogan continue charging your saved credit card after you ported out?

          • @victorheaven: I don't think so. Update it to a debit card with low balance if it worries you.

            • @Neoika: Makes sense, wouldn't have thought Kogan will but was hoping to see if they still incorrectly charge TomGum.

        • +1

Hasn’t been a month yet since I ported out. I’d assume I won’t get charged since I can’t even log in.

      • +3

When I was in Shaol Bay, Kogan worked better than Belong and Boost.

  • +2

As previously mentioned Kogan freebie that we used to know changed greatly recently. Not only do you need to call to cancel auto recharge and remove credit card details. On top of that, when you do call and remove auto recharge your service stops immidately, which means that if you do want to use the month you walk a tightrope of cancelling just before you are billed.

    • Not really. I am still able to receive calls and texts on my number after the month is finished

      • This is what Kogan mobile reps tell if you try to cancel, may be lies, to be honest I did not try yet because I just started a new package. It may be a new rule since the new year, I tried just a couple of days ago.

        • +2

I think they did something last year on those lines but luckily my current one is going okay as i was waiting for the jb plans instead of switching to boost.
The other annoying bit is that the 4G/5G stops during calls. You can't look up the reference from your emails while calling bunnings complaining about your order cancellation for karcher sweeper

          • @Royale with cheese: It says 20 days in the T & Cs before you can not receive incoming activites. It may be not strictly enforced for the first 25 days or so, but you may have to recharge if so. Refer to this.

          • @Royale with cheese: "The other annoying bit is that the 4G/5G stops during calls."
This problem happens with other providers too. For instance with Belong.

        • +1

This is what Kogan mobile reps tell if you try to cancel

Yeah got the same thing when I tried to disable my auto renew. Rep said I will lose my number lol.

Tbh I think it's just a scare tactic.

I ported out anyway thank god.

    • Are there any way that we can use a prepaid master / visa card to fill up payment information so they can't auto recharge if we forget to call and cancel?

      • +1

Sure, it could be a way around. But depending on banking they sometimes still manage to charge debit card/accounts although they are prepaid. And if they do not, technically you still owe them the charge of the next month even though they are unable to process the payment. May work for some but I prefer not to resolve this via banking tricks.

  • +2

Surely port-out would stop the auto recharge?!?

    • Unsure what you mean.

      • +2

In response to "Call to cancel your plan anytime", if you ported out there is nothing to charge you for

    • Did anybody confirm that porting out removes charges?

  • hia, it (https://www.kogan.com/au/buy/kogan-mobile-monthly-plan-vouch…) states : Voucher must be purchased prior to 11:59 AEDT on 31/12/2022. Voucher expires at 11:59pm AEDT on 31/01/2023. Activation must be made before the voucher expiry date. anyone bought and confirm working? tia

    • Seconding this.

Seems to be a lot of typical Kogan Mobile cut'n'paste template keeping old text that doesn't make sense. For instance despite being marked as New Customers Only, the 'old' text is included as follows:

"If you are already a Kogan Mobile customer, simply login to your account and use your voucher to recharge. Each voucher can be redeemed for a MEDIUM Monthly Plan without any additional charge."

If anyone has bought this and used it as a recharge, please confirm.

  • Not sure where to post it but I changed to kogan esim yesterday and when I call landline numbers in Victoria (I’m in vic) I have to put the 03 area code. Is this normal with esim? Thanks

  • +1

I ported in to Kogan (this plan) from Boost, for whatever reason I could not make outgoing calls, send SMS or use data. I could only receive calls and SMS. When I tried calling any number, it would simply divert to their helpline to activate the plan. Was on call with their support for 2 days before giving up and porting away to Amayasim which was flawless and was working perfectly within 30 mins. Really bad experience with Kogan, I was surprised. I could swear by these guys 3 years ago. Now I wouldn't recommend them.

  • +1

so basically this is a free prepaid plan for 1 month if you choose an esim?
what if you add a prepaid card with $1 balance for the auto renew it will fail when auto renew is due so what happens then will you still be able to receive sms to port out later on?
what if you call up to cancel the auto renew before its due will you loose your number or still be able to receive calls sms for 90 days?

    • Try it and rapport back here to let us know, seriously.

If Kogan keeps up this "can't turn off auto re-charge unless calling crap" I'm done with Kogan Mobile

and will forfit my one and only Kogan Mobile Code I have in stock I purchased from this deal

happy to report back i got it free for 1 month used a $1 prepaid card . incoming calls were disabled as autorenew failed but you can still get sms for how long i dont know? i ported my numbers back out with in 24 to 48hrs as i didnt want to risk loosing them but i suspect it may be up until 3 months you can still receive sms?

        • Thanks for remembering and making effort to respond. You made the right choice porting out quickly. So in order to port out of Kogan, did you do it via a call/live chat in order to give them your security confirmation txt/code as you could no longer send txts?

          • @ozhunter68: You don't need to reply with the code when you're porting out. It's only when you're porting into Kogan/Vodafone.

        • +2

The official Kogan stance is that you can still receive calls and texts for 20 days after recharge expiry. On my previous Kogan service it was 21.The one before that was 25.

@Neoika: The service where incoming calls and texts stopped after 21 days was one of these new deal ones.

            • @Neoika: Fair question, answered also fairly above (below your question) lol.

The Grey Area here guys is calling Kogan to Stop Auto Re-Charge, and going by the various mixed responses on this blog in Some cases Kogan Rep will Cancel the whole service/number and No Porting, let alone receiving calls or texts are possible.

This is what you want to avoid If you want to port/keep This Number.

  • I've just tried to port a number to Kogan using the esim and there are known issues - as stated by the operator.

I am currently with Kogan customer service. Esim will not automatically and without hassle allow porting.

YMMV but take care and think carefully before porting to Kogan and their known issues with esim.

  • +6

Okay so I bought this deal yesterday for $0 (eSIM) to use as a 40GB recharge on an non-eSIM compatible tablet that I just use for data. I had an existing Kogan Mobile account which I had Auto Recharge disabled and all Credit Card information removed.

    This was the process:

    1. Bought the deal for $0, got an email with eSIM QR code, etc. Ignored this email. Couple of minutes later I got an email with my voucher code. Voucher expiry stated as 11:59pm AEST on 31/01/2023.

    2. Went to use the voucher as a recharge on my account like I've done dozens of times before, but now I had to tick a box to agree to regular credit card charges each month and enter credit card information. Did this but it was giving me an error, it wouldn't process the payment. I was using the same credit card I always use for Kogan Mobile, never had an issue before.

    3. So I went into my Account settings and added New Credit Card there. The same credit card as before, accepted. Authorisation of $1 was processed on the card at this time.

    4. Went to use the voucher as a recharge, ticked the box and entered credit card information, success. Authorisation of $1 was processed on the card at this time.

    5. 40GB of data added to my account with 31 days remaining before Auto Recharge.

    6. Went back into my Account settings to see if I could remove Credit Card information and disable Auto Recharge as before but those options are now no longer available. All I can do is Update Credit Card to add a new credit card.

    Hope this helps.

When it comes time to ring them to cancel Auto Recharge I'll post another update, but you can see the post from edrift with an explanation on how it works.

    • +2

I did the same yesterday, with much the same result. It'll be interesting to see if they're happy to cancel auto recharge without cancelling the service (as I've done once so far), or insist on cancelling the service (as others have experienced). If the latter, I guess I'll try HUACA once or twice and if that doesn't work, just cancel it on 20/2, a day before the auto recharge is due. In my case it's just a throw-away number on a secondary SIM, so it's not worth porting away.

      • See my experience posted below.

    • Okay well, I said I would update when I went to cancel the service, so here it is.

It wasn't easy because I didn't have the sim in the device I was calling from. They wanted to send a confirmation text to proceed with cancellation and refused to action anything without it. Even after establishing my identity with name, address and date of birth. They also refused to action disabling Auto Recharge.

So I escalated to a complaint (got a reference number) and they said a Manager would call me back within the hour. That didn't happen.

I called again after work and spoke to another CS rep who put me on hold to speak to their Manager and they went ahead and actioned the disabling of Auto Recharge for me. They said without recharge the service would expire after 90 days.

All up both calls combined took about 20mins. Certainly a whole lot more hassle than it used to be. But YMMV.

      • Not an issue for people like me managing permanent 5 numbers and port in/out often anyway. Maybe change your way. This change is against people using disposable numbers and making people to recharge to increase revenue. Did you mention the delivery issue with Boost? Maybe find a way to sort it out. One Boost starter recharge gives a number 28 + 180 days life.

        • What does Boost have to do with anything? This is Kogan, I'm not keeping the number or porting out, it's just a disposable sim I use(d) for data.

          • @wavesgreen: I said maybe change your way, just keep some numbers. Kogan's change is obviously not friendly to disposable numbers. Boost and Kogan can be a loop for always free.

            • @Neoika: Nah going with Boost and having to wait for a sim to be delivered (or not delivered at all thanks to Australia Post) that I have to pay for upfront to get refunded later (or not if the cashback doesn't get verified) and port over to, compared to free eSim with Kogan that is ready to use immediately and costs me $0.

              • @wavesgreen: Now you have to deal with the auto recharge issue for every new number.

                • @Neoika: What issue? I call up and cancel it. I'd have to call to port out anyway, no steps saved with going the Boost route.

                  • @wavesgreen: No call needed for porting mostly.

                    • @Neoika: Yeah emphasis on 'mostly'. Have had to call a few times when porting. Too much uncertainty with Boost, all I need is one sim to go missing or one cashback to not get approved and I'm out of pocket and/or having to make a string of phone calls.

But we'll see. I bought a Boost sim back on the 5 Feb and am aiming to port one of my numbers across by the end of the month. Haven't received the sim as yet.

  • Hi,

Did a stupid thing. If you accidentally deleted the eSim they sent you (as in you installed in on your phone then deleted it and you can't reinstall it because eSims seem to be once off use only), how do I proceed? =(

Do I buy another eSim? Technically, my number has been ported to Kogan so…?

    • According to this you have to buy a new esim and call them to transfer the service over, and it looks like esims are $2.

Pretty ridiculous since other telcos let you just get a free replacement esim, it's not like it costs them anything.

    • The steps say:

"If you lose your device or purchase a new device while using an eSIM you will need to order a new eSIM and follow the steps to reactivate it: a) Order an eSIM from Kogan.com, b) Follow instructions in email to download the SIM to their new phone, c) Call customer Care to move their existing service to the new SIM."

So you'd have to phone them to ask, but MAYBE they'll let you complete part a) by ordering another free e-sim, then transferring the number over to that second one. i.e. If they want to charge you for it I'd say, "Oh but e-sims are showing as free on Kogan this month."

But you'll have to check you still get the rest of your first month free AND make sure they've cancelled billing on the first e-sim so you don't get charged for one or both when month 2 rolls around.

Or just port away for a month using something from here: https://www.ozbargain.com.au/pages/mobile-plans

Or order a second e-sim and just forfeit the number (start using the new number that comes with the second e-sim).

      • Thank you! They said I wasn't allowed to Port from kogan to kogan over the phone, I have to fill in a form.

This is the site they provided me
        Www.koganmobile.com.au/confirmidentity

When I called back, they gave me another address

Has anyone used these before? Like is it legit?

        • Both of those resolve to the same URL anyway. If it was Kogan it must be legit I guess.

But two days wait? Surely they jest. It should be done in minutes over the phone, by talking to a rep, the rep gives you an email address that goes directly to them, and you photograph and email whatever is required - like holding your license up next to your face (after covering the card number - thanks so much Optus) to confirm it's the same person. A telco did something like that for me once.

Imagine having your phone and wallet stolen while out one night, buying a new phone the next day, but then having to wait two days with no ability to call all the businesses with cards in your wallet to cancel/get new accounts. What a pain in the neck!

I'd probably port away for whatever the minimum time is before you can port back in (either one or two months I bet), then back again. e.g. Aussiebroadband has first month free. Then if Kogan's port-back wait period is two months, find a second one here: https://www.ozbargain.com.au/pages/mobile-plans.

OR… If I did need to wait two months to port back to Kogan, but couldn't find a second telco in that list with data (if I needed data of course)… then I'd port my number to Aussiebroadband for month 1, use that for calls/text/data.

Then for month 2 I'd port from AB to something cheap like Aldi for calls only, and buy a second physical SIM (if your phone has a SIM slot too) from Kogan and activate whatever new phone number comes with it). Use the cheap (Aldi etc) one for calls, and the second Kogan one for data.

Then at the end of month 2 I'd phone to cancel the Kogan one, and port my "real" number from Aldi (or whoever the second month port was with) to Kogan again.

          • @[Deactivated]: Well I guess the problem also is that if I port out, usually they send through an sms asking to confirm by sms back but since I have no service whatsoever, that's going to be an issue. Right? Does Aussie broadband do this to you?

            • @everydayimbargaining: Can someone else answer this? (I've never ported, only bought new SIMs and left the old number behind.)

  • +5

    They've updated the purchase-by and use-by dates…..

Voucher must be purchased prior to 11:59 AEDT on 28/02/2023. Voucher expires at 11:59pm AEDT on 31/03/2023.

    • It is common practice and it may be extended again.

    • awesome good news.

  • Can anyone confirm that you don't need to call if porting out? It seems obvious since I don't think you can have 2 concurrent service providers on the one SIM (though maybe on eSIM with Android 13+, as you can for NBN).

    • Yea honestly I think this is just a given.

So basically to cancel without being charged, either:

      • Port out before the month of service ends; or
      • Call up to cancel before the month of service ends; or
      • Use a one-time disposable card as the saved Credit Card (Revolut, ZIP - any others?)
  • +1

So old expired voucher numbers can be extended (old system - ie. can still cancel auto recharge online). New sims/ esim free for first month plan must be cancelled via call up.

    • +1

Yes according to some replies. It acts as a plan switch.
