Sony TV Has Error, Turns on Briefly but Won't Stay on - Sony Warranty Options (TV Included with House Purchase)

Hi,

I purchased a house, in the contract it included the TV's in the pool house and outdoor area. Unfortunately, both have issues, but my main issue is the 85" Sony TV. I contacted the old owners and I managed to get the receipt for the TV, it was purchased from Costco on 26/8/17. The price was $8599.

I have reached out to Sony, saying that a TV with this price tag should still work, they have said they don't have parts to repair the TV. They said they can offer me a discount off a new TV, this equates roughly to 20% below the listed price.

What options do I have? I think the TV may have been grey imported as I can't find much info on this TV, eg Costco may have bought this TV in. Model is KD-85x8500D

    • Good advice but i would skip NCAT, had issues with Apple, amazing how the story changes from their representatives when you tell them Fair Trading. THey basically shutup about their policies and prepare for a courier to pick up the faulty goods with a refund.

For me Sony have been first class in replacing my 5 year old (hi spec) 65" tv with a brand new similar spec unit. Was quite seamless & great customer service from my experience. I did mention ACL & talk up my loyalty to Sony in the warranty letter (which is true for televisions). First one I have had fail actually. In this case though for such a high price tv, Sony would do well to replace it.

Why don't you pop the back cover and check if any capacitors hasn't popped? Sometimes the repair is really cheap.

  • have you checked the settings in the tv i remember some sony tvs had a child proof option where it could turn on then turn off moments later

  • With Sony you need to keep pushing for a while. The “no parts” bit pretty much seals the deal. Fair enough to negotiate on who pays repair costs for a 5-6 year old TV, but if it can’t be repaired at all that puts the onus back on Sony. They’re slow but will come to their senses eventually. Keep mailing them.

  • Lucky to even get a 20% discount as I don't believe these TV's were designed for outdoor use.

Costco are actually pretty good as long as you have some documentation that the TV no longer works, you have proof of purchase (a credit card statement in our case) and can transport the TV back to Costco.. We had a 60" Sony die after 3 years. Sony sent us an email that the TV could no longer be repaired due to lack of spares. We sent this along with the proof of purchase to Costco who then gave us a full refund paid to the credit card .

The OP's main problem is they are not the original purchaser. They would need the original purchaser to contact Costco and get a refund on their behalf. They would also need to be able to transport their 85" TV back to Costco (box not required but need remote and other included accessories) before Costco can issue a refund.
