Been More than 8 Years since Last Moved Apartment, Any Advice or Tips to Save and Make It Less Stressful?

Hi, been ages since I last moved to new place. Feel like a Noob and a million things to do and it's stressful. Even though it's just me and my stuff. A lot of stuff accumulated though through the years. New unfurnished home is still a rental but will be bigger than current dump. And newer.

Any advice on important things I should avoid or things I should do during the stressful and hassling process? Like regarding the movers, packing, condition report, setting up nBn, cleaning previous apartment etc. There is helpful advice from other old discussions already on buying new furniture and signing up utilities but anything new to add from more experienced folks is appreciated.

Much Thanks

Give the movers an accurate estimate of your stuff so they have enough time to do it all properly. Use quality boxes that stack well.

National Storage tend to have cheapest boxes. Also, try best to keep a spreadsheet and label boxes with room and general description of what's in it.

Take photos of breakables and valuables.

If there's an overlap in dates, consider moving yourself. Trucks are cheapest during the week and Sundays. Saturday runs at around $160-200.

Donate stuff you dont want as you go.

Moving in and out of a rental: take a high quality, slow movie and narrate as you walk around the property (this is in addition to the report and pics of specific issues). It helps cover things you may not notice. We used it once to show a kitchen shelf part had been missing when we moved in. No-one had noticed and noted it on the entry report and it was brought up when we were moving out.

Write down EVERYTHING that is in each moving box and try to keep things tidy and together. Takes the stress out of finding random things you suddenly need in the early days.

Have a ruthless cull of stuff before you start packing (and continue it as you pack). Why move crap to a new house.

Have a serious think about furniture pieces and if they'll work in the new place. No sense moving a couch that's not going to work in the new living room. You may as well sell/donate it whilst in the old place.

Throw out/sell at least one third of your stuff.

When I moved every couple of years for my job I had a routine of throwing out any clothes I had not worn in the last 12 months. Never had any regrets.

Also consider donating stuff to Vinnies.

Just don't dump it outside, so check the hours they are open.

get a longer lease so you dont have to move as often.

    • Know anyone offering leases >8yr?

  • Stress is in the mind. Like there are always solutions to issues.

    Keep a open mind.

But best if you have some social contacts you can call on for help.

Even bribing them with a dinner etc.

Also if you have the cash don't cheap out. On moving.

    • Get a friend to stay on the phone with you. Or check in a few times a day when you are supposed to be working on the move.
    • Start taking photos and putting stuff on gumtree and fb market place. Set reasonable prices depending on your situation. I put up my fridge, microwave, couch etc on for free provided they took it all. It makes a huge difference when the stuff you don't want to take with you are gone.
    • Rent a storage place. Could be your friend's spare room or garage. Move your packed stuff into the storage. The less you have in your current place, the easier it gets.
    • Once you have reduced your possessions into bare minimum, ie fit your whole life in your car, you can't find stress even if you go look for it.

Dont DIY, even if you did it the last time and was a breeze. You are older now and as you said more stuff accumulates over the years.

Get a mover, give them good info to get a correct estimate. We always underestimate how much we have, then when the movers take longer, we are the ones dispappointed.

Overlap the lease by at least 2 weeks.
When I moved out of my first rental in my youth, I only allowed 1 day to move. Wasn’t thinking at all. Didn’t know I had to get the carpets professionally cleaned. It was just enough time to move all the stuff and do a quick clean.
They took 1/2 the bond. I was angry about it at the time, but I’ve grown up since then and now I think it was fair enough.

    • 2 weeks? Surely 3-4 days overlap is enough

      Day 1 Move
Day 2 Clean by cleaner from airtasker
day 2 afternoon or day 3 - Return keys

I'm moving next week and I got 4 days overlap

Day 1 - Move all the small stuff myself
Day 2 - Removalist moving furniture
      Day 3 - Clean
      Day 4 - Return keys

      Removalist cost me $250
      Cleaner cost $480

  • Cheers all good advice, thanks everyone. Kinda a hoarder so throwing out stuff a as slow painful process.Hired a mover. Running way behnd schedule so the two lease will overlap by a week. Hopefully will get most of my bond back. Really regretting taking this long to move out.

turns out electricity and gas is embedded for new building. So there was only one choice. Makes it easier.
