  • I'm also looking into new year new me. Can someone please recommend a not too expensive treadmill?

    • Costco has a (covenant) sale on exercise equipment at the moment, cheapest treadmill atm

      • do you have any recommendation on something around $500?

        • Nah. I’m not a fitness person at all, bike is the start.

        • +5

You get what you pay for. If 500 is your budget for a treadmill, I wouldnt bother. It's going to be a junk.

        • +1

Decent treadmill will set you back 2k, anything under and you might as well walk …..which in fact you should do

          • @botchie: Treadmills from the lesser known brands can be hit and miss but there are ones well below 2k that are decent. Mine was 800 thereabouts bought over 2 years thats been sturdy and reliable, that doesn't have the bells and whistles like inbuilt flashy screens and apps that the 2k ones have.

        • +2

Look second hand. You'll find heaps of treadmills in as new condition. Paid around $300 for a lifespan torque 2 a few thousand kilometres ago and hasn't missed a beat. Haven't done any of the recommended maintenance and it's still going strong. I reckon second hand gym equipment is where it's at. Most people barely use the equipment after the novelty wears off.

          It’s free to run outside

          • -1

            @FocusRider: This. It’s also a better experience.
Time passes a lot quicker outdoors vs indoors on a treadmill and it’s too easy to just stop on a treadmill.

          • @FocusRider: It is free to run outside, however recently i have started getting really bad hayfever. Trying to run/walk outside while sneezing non stop, eyes getting all itchy and running out of tissues is not a fun experience.

      • My friend drives 3 minutes to the gym so she can use the treadmill

    • +3

Cheaper treadmills usually have weak motor and narrow track, not enjoyable to walk or run on at all.

Buy a pair of comfortable runners, walking or jogging around your neighbourhood is usually more effective.

Go on Marketplace. Heaps of post-covid machines for cents on the dollar.

      • +1

Or heaps of New Year New Me machines for a fraction, just wait till March or April lol

        • +1

Way too optimistic. Try end of Jan lol

    • threadmills/spinbikes/ellipticals/home gym systems are usually $0 on marketplace, if you have a car with a tow bar.

    • Used off Gumtree or Marketplace. My sister just sold a good one hardly used for $400. Plenty of deals on there, plenty of people have new year ambitions they do not fulfil. I expect to see yours on there next year.

    • Free to walk outside :)

  • +5

Doesn't everyone just buy 1month old ones off gumtree at a 90% discount? I didn't realise these things were sold new!

    • +2

Just saw same model on gumtree for $750, used. Go figure!

    • Yea sometimes but sometimes people still want the stupid prices they paid for them coz they didn’t bargain or buy on a promo.

  • Will this make me an american hero like lance armstrong and date sheryl crow?

    • +2

Nah, you need some of this.

    • +1

Are you willing to lose a testicle?

Get Magnetic resistant one, smoother to ride and adjust, much more quiet, no issue with pad wearing out.

    • +6

This is a magnetic resistance model

      • really??? I will get one then…Thanks.

  • I thought they were available every hard rubbish collection…

For anyone looking to get into cycling at a very inexpensive price, I can swear by this bike from Kogan. I used to be a runner but I have OA in my left knee so my running days (and even walking) are over unless I want a knee replacement at 45 years old. I bought this back in May and use it 6-7 days a week for an hour a day and it's still going strong. Easy to assemble, good resistance options, and very comfortable to ride flat out for an hour. My thinking was to buy something cheap and if I get a year out of it, great. As soon as it breaks and given I am now hooked on the cycling, I'll fork out a bit more for something better like this one posted from Cosco. As a starting point for someone who doesn't feel confident they will stick to it, I do recommend this one from Kogan.

I have moderate arthritis in both knees and in left foot and still run 3-5 days a week. Cycle the other days with one day rest.

Listen to podcast by an orthopaedic called JOINT ACTION

      • Thanks. Will do.

I’ve had X-rays on my knees and I have barely any cartilage left in my left knee so as much as I’d love to keep running (or walking every day), I’ve been told by my physiotherapist that it will lead to a knee replacement. For now I’m just trying to keep active and delay the knee replacement for as longs as I can. Since switching to cycling instead of walking 12km a day, my OA has improved and I’m having less pain and inflammation in my left knee.

BTW, my OA is likely a direct result of a skiing injury I sustained in 1995 that I never had professional looked at. The damage was done back then and I’m paying the price for it now.

        • I could be different as mine is due to overweight. After X-ray, my GP asked me to only walk when necessary and not for exercise.

I was worried and spoke to physio who asked me to listen to the above podcast and to include at least one run every week for strong bones. He also told me of a 70 year old with no cartilage who still runs.

I run 10kms or cycle 40-60kms everyday with no pain in knees but my left foot arch has collapsed and hurts while walking.

          • @Commenter: The only way I can run, even if it's once a month, is to taken Meloxicam 15mg (anti-inflammatory) which I don't want to become dependent on. Unfortunately, my running days are over. I had Xrays of my knees in Oct 2019 and the last one was in Apr 2022 and the cartilage went from about half in 2019 to almost none in 2022 and I have been running 12.5km most days since 2006.

  • Good quality equipment holds its value, esp top branded gym equipment.

    Cheap brands, always devalue quickly

    • +2

I bought a home gym from Kmart back in 2006, it was $249, a year later sold it for $350. The most workout I got from it was assembling and disassembling, in between it was mostly a clothes hanging rack. :D

    • Peloton is a great example of that as evidenced by their share price.

FYI, since some people are obsessed with the weight of the flywheel:

    10KG Flywheel

    • It’s not really about being obsessed, it’s just that as you progress you basically grow out of a bike with such a light flywheel unless of course there’s an abundance of resistance settings.

  • -2

    Buy a real bike instead.

  • -1

Looks like a decent spin bike, you will also need a big fan, need to sweat a lot to be effective.

But a real bike is much more enjoyable, indoor cycling gets bored real quick. Hard to self-motivate, unlike spin classes.

    • -1

What? The amount you sweat has absolutely zero to do with an effective workout!!!

    • +1

indoor cycling gets bored real quick

I put my exercise bike in front of my tv, good motivation as two birds one stone catching up on tv series

  • Can't adjust the handlebar

    • If you are talking about this bike it says the handlebars are adjustable.

      • no, they don't go forward and backwards, only up and down. crap

  • How does this bike compare to the Horizon gr3 with included console for $370 odd?
    https://www.ebay.com.au/itm/384704879277?mkcid=16&mkevt=1&mk…

  • Personally, at this price I’d go for the Yesoul S3.

One of the best bang-for-your-buck spin bikes you’ll find for the price, if you’re keen on spending $500+ but the Yesoul can also be had cheaper during eBay sales.

    • Second that. Had one for nearly year and apart from the replacement battery for bluetooth connectivity being hard to find, its been awesome.

      • Am interested : what's the difference between s3 and m1 Yesoul models?

        • M1 is entry level although no major differences between the two when looking at specs. Both have same flywheel of 7.5g and 100 levels of manual resistance. M1 seems to have two water bottle holders instead of one for the s3. I imagine the build and design of the s3 is more robust given the higher price. S3 does look sportier and easier to maintain and assemble given that design. This page suggests its quieter although i think not by much and that the S3 is more higher end. There's a lot more youtube reviews around of the S3 than the m1.

          • @isaiah247: The Proform one does appear better with the iFit 1 year subscription and larger flywheel. Was tempted to upgrade from the Yesoul but i'll resist. Anyone know if it definitely connects to Zwift/Peleton?

  • For $250 off gumtree I got a magnetic flywheel that had automatic resistance adjustment (as in, a few "hill route" programs to choose from). I'd always hunt this out IMO, manually adjusting resistance and/or one resistance for the whole ride must be boring.

    • Do you mind sharing the brand and model no of the one you got? Automatic resistance adjustment plus magnetic resistance sound like a dream!

      • Sure. It is an Orbit brand (from the shop Orbit Fitness). The model I have is OSP209. Don't think they make it anymore necessarily. I'm not actually sure the exact wording to search for for that "feature", good luck!

  • +2

Do these make a lot of noise? I live in an apartment so the stomping from a treadmill makes it unsuitable. Would an exercise bike be audible to downstairs neighbours?

    • Only if you ride it one wheel

  • Magnetic resistance bikes have the tiniest noise audible to the rider and for everyone else further away its zero noise.

  • These are pretty crap for the resistance.

You.can modify them, but it's still not great. I'd say after modding still about 3/4 of a gym one.
The button to adjust the gear are in the tablet holder, so you can't change gears with a tablet in there, unless of course you have an iFit subscription where the app will change gears.

    • what would you recommend then?

      • Dunno.

  • +1

FYI, best to buy a normal bike and a bike trainer.
This way you have flexibility to ride outside during good weather and inside when it's bad weather.

    • I bought that $99 Aldi bike trainer and it doesn't feel as nice as a proper static bike.

I however got a Renpho bike which is more of a smart static bike…

      • Yeah also are not the best but you know, 95% of OZB are not riders. Just need some form of exercise.
So Aldi could do. But the usual, impulse buy and Gumtree in 3 weeks

  • The new me from 2020 is not ready to meet the new me of 2023.
