Moving to Canada and I Will Miss This Site So Much

In Canada, we have red flagdeals, which seems to have sold itself out. I just want everyone here to appreciate how (profanity) amazing this website is.

I will miss you all.

I don't know where I'd be without OzBargain.

Maybe I'd have enough money to buy a house….¯_(ツ)_/¯

But I wouldn't have an awesome community of like minded bargain hunters, that's for sure!

Good luck for the future but don't be a stranger, OzB is too good to just leave behind.

    • +9

So it’s not avocado toast or a daily coffee, it’s OzBargain!

    • +2

      But no Canadian deals lol!!

      • +1

Why don't you post some? I am sure there will be Ozbargainers visiting Canada. I posted a deal from Uruguay once. https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/467172

      • +2

Be honest, are you really interested in the deals, or are the forums the drawcard? 😁

        • I have no clue what that means 🤷‍♂️

          • +2

@coasttech: Well you may not be able to get to your local Bunnings for a deal, but you can always weigh in on the current drama in the forums from wherever you are! You can still be part of the fam!

I originally had the possessive apostrophe, but then removed it because I liked the potential double-meaning.

    • How will he make it popular there?

      • +2

He will hire OP as a sign spinner.

      • Canadians love a good deal!

        • but do they deal a good love ?

        • Unfortunately Canadians have better things to worry about than good deals… Like keeping warm for instance.

What's involved moving so far away?

Do you basically sell everything you don't need and re-buy stuff when you arrive? Or is it cheaper to pay thousands to get things shipped?

    • +2

Why would you bring things you don't need?

      • +3

Well I'm not very sentimental but some people may not want to leave behind their great grandfathers set of drawers.

Everybody has different definitions of "need"

        • +12

Well those drawers could be folded up and brought in the plane like any other item of vintage clothing OP likes to wear. Canada can get cold so it makes a lot of sense to bring some drawers.

    • +1

Almost everything that's 220v we are selling. Washer and dryer in my wife's ridiculously large sewing machines we're going to take with us and make work. Ovens and saunas in Canada work around 220/240 so fingers crossed. Everything else is on Facebook marketplace and gumtree.

      • +7

How is transporting a washer and dryer economical/worth the hassle?

        :/

        • +3

He's just waiting on a good deal on an A380 to transport the goods. I heard the second hand market isn't too bad too.

        • +1

We already have the shipping contaner… so its got room. Also have you moved accross the contry before? Not sure you understand the complexities.

          • +1

@coasttech: How long does it take to get it shipped all the way there?

From the NT to Tas our container was 7 days, by road of course.

            • +1

@SnowDragon: About 50 days. My father-in-law just passed away suddenly and some of the stuff comming with us over seas are keep sakes for us to remember him.

          • +2

@coasttech: The complexities are moving with a wife. I would have left almost everything behind.

A shipping container is a waste of money imho, especially with today's rates.

When I moved we brought a lot of crap with us, but only used a giant box, still cost us $2k US iirc.

            • +4

@TEER3X: So many peoples personal unsolicited opinions… lol

Sorry to hear you own so much crap.. we do not. Especially the items of my late father-in-law.

        • Chip shortages, what we have is new and 220v uses less power. Also I want to live my own life and make my own decisions.

          • @coasttech: Good you've got a shipping container of space, makes the 'size' or 'weight' issues less of an problem as long as you can squeeze it all into the available space/limits (and can handle the shipping wait times)

Have you checked the washer and dryer you have won't have issues on the different Canadian power Freq? (50hz here, 60hz there…could depend on the motors and how it's wired, some may have issues others may not and just run or spin faster)

        • It's not. Particularly given sites like Craig List over there you can find just about anything cheap/free, and a much greater selection (being just north of the USA).

      • -5

        ridiculous a bit

you do know that there are 220/240 V to 120 V adapters available yeah ?
they aren't that expensive either. So dont need to sell everything 220/240V

        • As a hardware service engineer, most devices we are going to be able to replace the internal components…. The complexity and amount of things that we need to cove,r outweighs the odd 220v I can pass onto someone.

I have said no to heaps of people looking for a "deal"

The other day we sold a very expensive air conditioning unit to a familiy that needed it for medical related issues pertaining to their daughter.

So… yeah my (profanity) and I can do what I want with it. ✌️

          • +1

@coasttech: oh course its your $h!t do whatever you want dude.

          • -3

@coasttech: Bro you won’t survive too long in Canada with that attitude. Chill. It is a forum post and people are just having a discussion with you. Nobody here actually gives a shit what you do or not do.

            • +3

              @Ridiculous Panda:

Nobody here actually gives a shit what you do or not do.

Yet some people feel their opinion is needed.

You’ll always be welcome on the ozzy-bargain forums mate - the premier resource for all rulings with matters of finance, love, life and more.

    • Good ring to that

    Mountiesdeals…we always get our bargains

  • Slap Justin Trudeau for me

    • Whatever floats your boat mate.

      • Thanks mate, a tip because you are so nice about it, don't drink the Kool aid over there

  • +6

Nice of you to say goodbye, coasttech.

Good luck to you and yours for the future in your new home.

    • Thank you. 😺

  • +3

    Greetings from Vietnam

  • Bye and gl!

  • You can still enjoy OZB from other countries.

  • Oh Canada. You are lucky to be going there. 👏🏿

  • +3

Have you selected a hockey team, yet or are you just waiting to be assigned one when you arrive?

  • You made a good decision. Canada is a socialist paradise. No gap fees to see a GP or specialist for instance. They have Walmart in Canada so you don't need to worry about Bargain Hunting, everything is cheap at Walmart. It's like Aldi prices but with a much larger range of merchandise.

  • What are you on about? I've moved to NZ since 2017 and still check this site daily. Correction: hourly… ok maybe every 5 minutes….

    • NZ is much closer to us than Canada…

OP Sorry to hear your loss, and best of luck with the move!

  • +1

what made you move to cold ass canada? i freeze my nuts off on a chilly sydney morning, i dont think i can handle any colder than 7c..

  • +2

Didn't know ppl actually moved to Canada willingly. Ozbargain has taught me so much.

  • You can build the Canadian version of ozbargain there. Bargain Beaver or BargainEh?

  • Licence the Ozbargain website framework off scotty and start your own.

    • +1

I think the problem isn't tech. The forum website ozbargain runs off isn't probably that complicated. It's the userbase thats the real value. How do you get all these ppl to adopt it and start posting deals and grow it to a sustainable level.

      • +5

        bikies

  • Eh?

  • Good luck and safe travels!

  • +1

    Is it always cold there?

    • 40 plus degrees in some parts in summer, e.g. Okanagan Valley.

  • Yes, I think I would miss the comradery on Ozbargain too.
Sorry to hear about your loss & best wishes for your trip & new life.

  • +2

Offtopic. I wonder how troublesome for a Canadian employer to hire an Aussie. I know in USA they have a E3 visa. What about Canada?

    • +1

They probably have the same or something similar, except you get an apology with it too, eh?

  • +1

Act like a boomerang and come back to oz. Goodluck for your future and go visit the northern lights.

  • +2

Living just across the border from France, in Geneva, I always use Dealabs.com, which to be fair has a nicer look than ozbargains. However, im always checking the discussion forum on ozb.

    • +3

But is it orange like OzB?

    • "flashy" websites really don't interest me, I prefer the old school websites that tend to be faster & quicker to navigate.
Some of the banking websites, for example, as so terrible. Sure they look "nice" but trying to find stuff on nested menus, etc is just painful.
I was waiting on chat for several hours yesterday at one of the big banks & it kept logging me out so I spent more time logging back in than solving the issue.
(and the end result was - you can't do that online, you need to download a form & email it to us! Even worse they said don't try to find the form through their menus, it is much easier to use google to find the website link! Hmmm… perhaps you need a menu option "Forms")

  • +1

So.. we have a place to stay when we visit Canada. Nice, thanks!

  • +1

redflagdeals.com isn’t bad for a Canadian equivalent. The same animated discussions, the same clever bargains, the same peculiar personalities.

    • +1

I wonder if there is a Canadian jv…

    • It looks complexly sold out. The site from 10 years ago to now is so different. RFD looks more paid for promotion deals.
