  • Considering buying a second one of these as a backup.

    I use this: https://www.bigw.com.au/product/decor-2-75l-microsafe-rice-c…

    2 cups rice
    4 cups water
17 minutes (May need to vary if your microwave is weaker/stronger)

Always fluffy afterwards with no water.

Can easily clean in dish washer but one less appliance cluttering the kitchen was the biggest win.

    • +3

Umm.. No thanks.. It's like trying to cook pasta in microwave.. Edible? Yes.. But is it good? Nah..

      • Why are you trying to cook pasta in the microwave?? Haiyaa

Rice are often cooked from a cold start vs pasta that's cooked from a hot start. Pasta cooked from a cold start = soggy!

      • +1

I also use the microwave cooker for my rice and have it down to a fine art. For those eating rice every night the digital one could be a good investment, but for sporadic use the microwave is supremely convenient and makes great rice.

        • key being "down to a fine art" …. some people have the ability to experiment with rice types, proportions and heat settings and times until they get it right ….. some people don't and just set and forget appliances are handy ……

          • @garage sale: Well figuring it out took like… 3 uses at most. Obviously electronic rice cookers are good - I was merely rebuking Lancerx's view that you can't get good rice from a microwave.

    • +3

I have the sistema version of this. 12 minutes, 4 cups of rice and equal height of water and it makes beautifully fluffy rice.

      Super easy to clean.

  • What is the wattage/power of this cooker? It will be labelled hopefully on the sticker underneath it.

  • +1

If capacity doesn't matter would the Xiaomi C1 be better than this? It's $75

  • Anyone know how good is this compared to Tiger, Zojirushi etc?

    • -2

Someone commented above about tiger vs aldi. Aldi kills the tiger.

  • +2

I have used this for a year and honestly i use it for rice about 3-4 nights a week and it works great, wonderful rice thats never stuck to the bowl, it does take 45 minutes whereas the ones that are cheaper cook slower. this uses humidity detection not just dry boiling as the cheaper ones which is why it takes longer.

Its best function is steaming. steaming shit is annoying but i loved steamed prepackaged dumplings because they taste better than boiling and this thing steams great with little to no mess quickly.

    • Oh I have never used this for dumplings steaming, any suggestions on how to do it?

      I have lost my manual.

    FUIYOOOOHHH

  • thanks Op! perfect timing my old rice cooker about to carked itself

  • Can you cook 1 cup or is there a minimum

    • water proportions become tricky if you try and make 1 cup of rice in a 10 cup rice cooker …. make larger quantity and freeze, frozen rice reheats well and very little wait time …. they actually sell frozen rice in coles and woolies be it at much higher prices than if you cook and freeze it yourself.

    • +1

usually 2 cups minimum for a 10 cup rice cooker.

if you cook 1 cup in a 10cup, it comes out undercooked.

      I have both a 10cup and 5 cup.

99% of the time I use the 5cup.. the 10cup comes out for parties.

  • -4

    It's just a rebranded Tiger

    • +2

      I highly doubt that.

      Got any sauce?

    • It doesn't have the same digitial timer as a tiger. This one doesn't have a clock. It cant be set to be ready at 6pm, it can only be set to be ready in a number of hours. A small but important difference.

  • I made a cake in this aldi rice cooker. My oven died that day so used this aldi rice cooker, wasn't the best or worst chocolate cake sponge but I wanted cake that night and better than nothing.

  • +2

Bought one last year. For the rice not to be gluggy, ignore the fill lines in the bowl and instead use equal of the included cups water to rice.

    • You need to finger it bruh.

  • Thanks!

  • Just like this miniature rice cooker.

Anyone else find watching people build tiny models strangely therapeutic?

  • +3

Big heavy and dreadfully slow cooking rice and the steaming function so-so. Steam basket to shallow. Last model had wrong instructions to set timer. Defaults to 5 minutes.

Upgraded to a Panasonic. Chalk and cheese.

  • Now I need some make-ahead recipes to go along with fresh rice.

    Uncle Roger Approves!!!

  • Still got a small Kambrook going strong (and a spare one in the garage), would have been $20. Nothing wrong with it, more in the technique - ie washing rice well, stirring before starting and 1 cup rice to 1.5 cups water always comes out perfect.

Don't need more appliances, instant pot for other things (and smashes brown rice faster).

    • What rice:water ratio for brown rice do you use ?

      • +1

1:2 I think, or a bit less. Brown rice does take longer to cook so been using the instant pot instead and noticed you don't need a much water.

  • Nobody is asking the real important question: does it play a jingle?

  • this looks like a cheap Shenzhen knock off of Tiger ricecookers. I guess it's still better than K-mart 15 bucks ones but nar …

  • This rice cooker is pretty good. Only downside is is take bit longer time to cook rice compare to the one I bought from Kmart.

    • I have the one from kmart, it seems pretty quick (for me) but does slightly burn the rice on the bottom though. Does the ALDI one burn ?

      • Hasn’t so far. Had it for a year

      • Helps to stir the rice about after you put the water in when you put it on.

  • Question: When cooking rice, do you follow the instructions of the rice cooker or the packet of rice?

    • Always follow Aldi Asian Grandma advice otherwise you will marry ugly girl

    • +1

      Neither!
Instructions are ingrained in the genes of all asians:
      1. Rinse rice until water is clear/almost clear
      2. Put rice in the rice cooker bowl
      3. Pour water and use finger method to stop

Do this daily, one day you can communicate with your ancestor that can tell you when to stop pouring water.

If you’re not asian, don’t worry, some random asian ancestors who pass by will help you if you are truly serious in the path of rice.

      • Not sure if #3 is serious or not, but please elaborate if serious?

      • +1

        Yeah used to do that.
Simple thing is 1: 1.5 rice:water comes out perfectly every time, no guess work

      • I read a lot of people use the finger method, but wouldn't it be easy to get it wrong? Pouring water into saucepan until it reaches finger would differ based on the size of saucepan, no? A larger sauce pan would need more water to reach finger than a small saucepan due to larger volume?

        • +1

is that the one finger knuckle above the top of rice to water? I think it works regardless of the quantities as the water gets in the voids.

I used to put hand flat on top of rice and lift up slighly and water up to the knuckle as well.

Cups measurement is just easier, especially if i'm only doing 1 cup rice.

          • @G-rig: ya, water to knuckle method. I figured 1.5 cups of water in a smaller pan would reach the knuckle compared to 1.5cups of water in a larger which might only reach half-way. I might have to try that method sometime to see how it goes.

  • Damn oos at 3 stores I’ve been to in Melbourne

I bought the Aldi one this evening, and have just come across what seems to see a similar rice cooker (Thomson Scenium Multifunctional Rice Cooker) being advertised by Coles for the same price as part of their Lunar New Year Special Buys Catalogue

    https://www.coles.com.au/catalogues/view#view=catalogue&sale…

    https://shop.coles.com.au/a/croydon/product/10-cups

  • Well, living in Geelong has its benefits. Went to Aldi this morning and grabbed one, still 5 left in Grovedale.

  • Went in yesterday and they didn't have it in Aldi Waterloo. Asked one of the staff and they were pretty sure the promotion didn't start till next week??
Went back to the same Aldi today and it was there this time! There were still 4-5 left after I took one

  • +2

I managed to grab one yesterday from Top Ryde. I was there semi-early.. 9:45am… There was 2 left after I took mine. Sure they're all gone now…. But, made some rice last night with it… It really felt like each grain was cooked individually to perfection. Very tasty. Also very happy to not have rice water splatter all over my benchtop (like my old one did).

I have had similar results from the cheapo glass lid cookers, but it was like a rare fluke. So, hopefully this is the normal Aldi cooker way.

  • Never owned a rice cooker before but bought this one and here’s my feedback:

-Cooked 4 ‘cups’ of rice and measured water up the indicated line.
-Function setting seemed easy, set to white rice and press start.
-No time indicator until the later stages of cooking, it did warn me in the manual of this.
-I cooked basmati but it seems to have turned out great, no sogginess, dry rice.
-It took 60min from start to finish.
-A bit large for what it is but not sure how it is relative to other 10 cup rice cookers.
-Seems good for $60, can’t complain at this stage

Picked up for $48.88 today! Still at least 4-5 left at Ambervale NSW
