Blu-Ray Clearance over 800 Titles $7 or Less + Delivery ($0 C&C/ in-Store) @ JB Hi-Fi

1440

As a blu ray collector and defender, this makes me both excited and deeply concerned.

Sure, most people aren't really that into movies beyond casual entertainment.

Sure, most people prefer to pay an ongoing fee to struggling indie companies like Netflix and Amazon and Disney in exchange for streamable entertainment.

I get it!

But for us "pretentious" (ozbargainer favourite word when talking about movies lately) purists, there is a lot of decent stuff here imo.

    • Don't you have like 50 JBs within 10 minutes? I'd never buy online from them, only for C&C.

Thanks mate, picked up fright night and the directors cut of star trek 2 and now I'm mulling over picking up cliffhanger.

  • ive seen some seriously incredible deals on clearance stuff at jb, surely there's some gems in here! last year i picked up a copy of pj harvey's live dvd 'please leave quietly' for a dollar.. and to think i was gonna pay 20 something dollars to get it posted!

It's a shame in some sense that they remove certain items from their website for such reasons.

One of Sight & Sound's top 5 movies of all time (Tokyo Story) is in many JBs near me, albeit on DVD, and in the 2 for $20 sale, yet you wouldn't know unless you went in store

I started a small blu-ray collection last year, mostly Disney movies for when my Disney+ subscription runs out. Most of them I purchased from Big W clearance and JB Hifi sales.

I love having the physical copy and all the bonuses/deleted scenes etc. that come on the disk. One of the last blu-rays I purchased from JB was A league of their own for around $4.50 - not streaming anywhere in Aus and couldn’t pass on it for that price.

Anyway, it’s a great time to buy.

    • I bought my first ever Blu ray last week (yes, I am late to the party) - Breaking Bad complete series.

It's tedious, having to wait on a load screen , there being ads, disclaimers that can't be skipped. It would have been much easier to just torrent it, in fact I might just do that to finish the rest of the seasons I'm currently watching to make it easier and quicker to get through.

  • The way things are going with streaming services I'm more and more glad I kept going with physical media. Thanks for the heads up, I'm sure I'll find a few for the collection.

  • Thanks for fighting the good fight. By keeping this niche alive, you influence the market price. I.e. users can resell with original creators whinging not getting a cut.

Amazon seems to be price-matching many of these, if anyone wants to give their money to Bezos instead / have Prime and want to save the shipping.

I wouldn't be too alarmed by the discounts offered on all these titles… having worked in the CD / DVD industry (albeit a decade ago), clearances like these happen for various reasons…

Quite often if a distribution company loses the rights to a specific title / range of titles, they'll dump or offer the stock to a specific retailer for next to nothing in a last ditch effort to make something off it… or if they're planning on re-releasing something in the future e.g. have an upcoming "anniversary" they can exploit to generate extra sale, they'll offer their remaining existing stock to someone for next to nothing in order to get rid of it.

Back in the EzyDVD days those bastarda got the monopoly of those deals - they'd take a lot of the discontinued products distributors were desperate to get rid of. I remember when they opened their Rundle Mall Harris Scarfe flagship basement store a good decade or so ago, 99% of the stock they had was deleted / older versions of various titles (things like Reservior Dogs 2-disc DVD for 99c… this version they were selling had been deleted by the previous rights holder a good 2-3 years beforehand, yet they had stacks of "new" stock to sell for their opening sale).

Given most CD / DVD chains have gone arse up over the last decade, the only real chain left for companies to clear out their excess stock would be JB. Judging by the titles on this list / the multiple distributors / and the various titles with deleted next to them, I reckon this is just your usual periodic cleanout of various titles - be it stock they've actually got in-store that they're trying to get rid of (as soon as their store stock is depleted it'll no longer be available at that price), or if it's supplier-driven, they'd likey just supply as ordered until the suppliers run out.

Wouldn't surprise me if most of those titles re-appear after this "clearance" - either as a re-release in a different format / from a different distributor / or even as the same product.

Although I don't have many physical titles these days, they still serve their purpose. There's always the argument that streaming is only possible while the product you've purchased is available from the provider you've purchased it through (and while you still have your account). At least with physical, once you've got a copy, there's no way you'll ever lose access to it… whereas with streaming, if a product title changes hands / ownership rights, there's every chance you'll lose access to something at some stage.

EzyDVD made $$$ from me, thought they’d have gone under by now but see they’re still online… and I have too many pages worth of orders under my account.

3D is down to 3 movies ;-; I wish I started watching 3D earlier to collect more because its so amazing

  • Not sure if it's already been asked/discussed somewhere in this labyrinthine thread, but are regular Blu-Rays worth getting, or should one hold out for Blu-Ray 4Ks?

    • +1

This is subjective, but many movies do not have 4k versions and may never get them (too soon to tell).

Regular Blu Rays still look perfectly fine on a 4k display if you're a regular distance from the screen. They also support uncompressed audio formats so they'll still sound good as well.

      • Thanks!

I used to run a couple Blockbuster stores and would have spent over a million dollars in stock during those years. So for me I paid my dues to only download now. I dont buy blurays anymore, do not stream because of poorer quality, only download the biggest rips possible with full Atmos or DTSX audio if available. I have over 100tb of content. But I still think discs should be available. I have thousands of DVDs and Blu-Rays in boxes still. Without the original discs being manufactured, I wouldnt be able to get the best downloads for movies or TV. The moment we go only streaming with hopeless compressed audio and low bitrate quality is truly the day home cinema dies. Although the content these days are pretty poor anyway, other than some great international movies and shows, Hollywood throws out maybe a handful of movies actually worth watching per year lately. Luckily we are getting old movies remastered in 4K.
