Good deal for a 240hz ips but waiting for 4k 120hz to be cheap

  • +2

    Rtings review for anyone interested.

    • +1

      Better review: https://pcmonitors.info/reviews/dell-alienware-aw2521hf/

Here's some UFO test footage too: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MBsABhJNeZM

This is a great monitor with VRR on using with the 'extreme' overdrive setting, but is apparently problematic with VRR off, forcing you back to the 'fast' setting, though that may be altered as per the notes in the PCMonitors review.

Keep in mind we're about to see 360Hz TN, IPS and even VA, as well as updated 240Hz panels for each technology, and I can't see new FHD 240Hz monitors being price far above this point. It's a bargain but buyer beware.

      • +2

Can confirm. With VRR off and super fast and extreme setting any text has severe trailing when scrolling. On fast with VRR off it looks fine. With VRR on and extreme its fine.

        • +1

Yeah and given that you're probably using this at 240Hz with VRR off to minimise input lag, it makes for a tricky proposition. Possible at this point there might be some tips on how to customise the overdrive modes in a service menu, but I make no guarantees.

          • @jasswolf: For me it's fine because I use VRR, but you're right if you want to maximise the input lag/response then it's not good because you have to compromise one or the other.

            • +1

@Yuri Lowell: Yeah you're looking at about 1-2 ms additional for the freesync, then input lag will go up further when you suffer frame rate dips. The processing delay is fine, it's more the dips you have to worry about.

      • 360hz? You mean 500+?

        • Both, but one is far more likely to be under $400 any time soon. But yes, 500Hz TN and IPS, for which I would suggest the TN.

          • -1

@jasswolf: Manufacturers have mostly dropped TN+VA monitors since 360hz has been a thing. IPS monitors match response times at that point while being more 'vibrant'. With micro led+oled also being adopted across the board, TN/VA are pretty much dead besides the zowie esports one which has like 80 nits peak brightness with its strobing on.

            • @JerraJones:

Manufacturers have mostly dropped TN+VA monitors since 360hz has been a thing.

Not true, what you might have witnessed in the Australian market reflects how retailers and suppliers in our local markets have been ordering. At QHD 360Hz, all of them will be on the field, and I'd expect at least TN and IPS to be doing so for FHD.

IPS monitors match response times at that point while being more 'vibrant'.

IPS is the weakest LCD tech in terms of overall response times, so I wouldn't be championing that as a solution. VA is the most vibrant, with IPS having the widest viewing angles as it's designed with consistent colour for mastering/colourist work in mind (colour accuracy comes down to manufacturing tuning though). In the fast refresh rate space, TN often has more contrast than IPS as well.

With micro led+oled also being adopted across the board, TN/VA are pretty much dead besides the zowie esports one which has like 80 nits peak brightness with its strobing on.

While OLED has great motion clarity at a given refresh rate due to its response times being suitable for 1000Hz, it also has even more sample and hold blur than LCD because it has no solve for its forced persistence right now. Scaling things up to 1000Hz to fix this is a huge power and lifespan challenge for the tech, and any BFI mode without image processing requires the panel maker to disable HDR.

My next monitor is probably going to be an OLED, but it's important that we understand the caveats and also the expected price ranges.

The same problems exist for microLED bar lifespan concerns, but you're now also introducing the issue of scaling up manufacturing to keep costs reasonable, which is not there yet and is only just getting there now for phones and VR headsets, through processes unlikely to translate to desktop monitors either due to sheer cost to nail the necessary yields.

I don't think Samsung can make a more pixel dense microLED TV right now than a 50" FHD, as they're still picking and placing individual microLEDs instead of a much faster chip, deposition or inkjet process.

Not sure where you're getting your Zowie info from, but I don't think it's from this decade? Here's their 360Hz TN reviewed:

The interesting (and good) thing about this blur reduction mode on the XL2566K is that it has barely any impact to the screens brightness! We had measured 338 nits in normal mode (DyAc off) earlier, and with DyAc enabled we could still reach up to 323 nits. The screen actually defaults to 100% brightness when you turn DyAc+ on, so you will probably want to turn this down to something more comfortable, but it does give you a nice bright image and a wide adjustment range to play with, unlike many blur reduction modes on other screens which are often very dark.

You'll also notice the 360Hz IPS and 240Hz OLED comparisons in the review, and accurate response time measurements. :)

I thought it was a steal at $263, this is an insane price !!

    • Damn I bought it for this price

    • Kinda want to buy another one at this new insane price but I won’t be gaming on two monitors at the same time so would probably skip.

  • Got it for $163 final price with eBay plus code and 10% off eBay vouchers.

    • Which codes did you use?

      • +1

The $25 off one and then my eBay vouchers I've accumulated at 10% off

        • +1

          eBay vouchers

          eBay Gift Cards. FTFY.

You can only use one voucher per order / transaction.

Thanks op. Got it for $174 because I got a $25 off eBay Plus code.

  • +7

    lol someone bought 10..

    • +3

      Yeh…. Must be a day trader…

      • two people bought ten!

Looks like we may have over 100 units available!

    • +7

Those will pop up on ebay a few days later for 50-100 extra. (profanity) resellers!

    • +9

They will be on fb market place for $250 each, price firm unwanted gift

      • +4

seen so many of the phillips 32 inch monitors on FB lately lmao

  • I've got one, great for 1080p gaming.

  • +2

Good price but for non gamer can’t go back to 1080p

  • +1

NGL quick glance and I thought this is a TN panel because a brand new 240Hz IPS monitor for under 200 AUD never exists in my knowledge. Such a great deal

  • Thanks OP, picked this up as a secondary vertical monitor to go with my G3223Q :D

    • +1

Planned to do exactly that with my G3223Q, but OOS by the time i saw this :-(

    • +1

Do you really need a 240Hz monitor as a secondary monitor tho

      • Probably not, but everything else from Dell that matches in with my current monitor hasn't been at a decent discount since I bought it, was actually waiting for the G2422HS to drop in price but $328 is way too much and the 27" version is in my opinion too big for 1080p and is $298, so this is a way better monitor than what I was originally looking at and cheaper by $100 - $200.

I'll still game on it anyway when I feel like playing something at 1080p/240Hz or when my 3080 decides in years to come that it doesn't like playing games at the highest settings at 4K/144Hz anymore ¯_(ツ)_/¯

  • I wonder which is the better deal, the 32" 4k Philips with VA $217 or this one?

    • +4

      Depends on your use case.

For gaming this Dell deal and for productivity Philips 4k deal.

      • Never had an ips monitor or a monitor that did over 60hz (even though I game fine on the ones I had) and the fastest pixel response I ever had on monitor was 4ms too, on the philips. So I thought at this price might be worth a try. It'll prob end up as a secondary though as 4k is too good.

    • Also depends on what your work involves, I'd prefer one wide monitor 34 inches.
Current setup is 1x27" and 1x24" vertical (easier to read documents)

  • +4

    Oops, @Muzeeb did it again
He played with your wallet, got you in the game
    Oh Muzeeb, Muzeeb
Oops, you think I'm a professional gamer
That I'm hooked on xbox game pass
    I'm not that innocent

      I ♥️ Britney

  • Question - what happens if you find a dead pixel upon receiving this?

    • +1

You can return to dell for a full refund

  • i want to experience over 60fps but im really used to 4k gaming, graphics are important to me, I think i might wait for a higher resolution monitor

    • +1

This is the exact reason I went and got a 4k 144hz monitor

    • what gpu you got or need that can do 4k gaming smoothly?

  • +1

I will believe 1ms gtg when I actually see it on an IPS. Also be aware it’s 1080p

  • Any good as any office monitor?, already have 1 27inch 4k monitor (S2721QS) looking to add secondary not sure if I should get another 27 or look at this 25 - price is tempting…

    • This is sub-par for office/productivity use, it's a 1080p gaming monitor first and foremost. You'll want to stick to a 4K monitor to pair with your S2721QS.

      • How is it sub par for office use when 25” IPS screen with FHD resolution has adequate PPI for reading etc?

        • That's 88 ppi, those pixels are gigantic and even more noticeable when you're just using it for static desktop work. We're not living in the 90s anymore, I wouldn't recommend anything less than a 1440p screen for productivity use these days.

          • @deadpoet: That means if I want a 32” monitor I need to buy one with 8k resolution?

        • this has a lower ppi than a 24" so you may notice the pixels more and text may be less sharp

          • @pinkybrain: My 32” QHD monitor has 91 ppi, a 25” FHD monitor has 88 ppi, I can read my works on MS Words and Excel clearly on my 32” monitor and if a 25” FHD monitor is only 3 ppi less than mine I don’t think it will make a huge difference.

  • Bought for my nephew as he wanted one for his bday!!! pitty ETA shipping is about a month. Other than that great deal thanks OP

    • It will probably ship sooner as I got mine from previous deal within two weeks even though ETA was 6-8 weeks originally. But I wouldn't risk it if birthday is close by.

  • prefect secondary monitor to match my aw2721d lol. like brothers now.
my secondary monitor really shows its age now. 240hz is way over kill for secondary, but every time i drag stuff over to it, i can feel the pain right away…..on 60hz….

  • Nice! Was waiting for a deal on a Dell S2721DGF but might get two of these for less and wait for a new model to be released. Maybe something with HDR

    • o.0 2 1080p to match one 1440p??

      • Well, atm there's nothing to match. I'm still using a pair of Acer X243's that I got from this site 10 years ago for ~$150 after cashback.

  • Dammit.. used the $20 off voucher, forgot to pay the remaining balance with giftcard ><

  • Would have bought this like 2 years ago when they were fleecing ppl for $600, now i don't even game anymore lol

Still a decent change from them alienware 1k+ wwwwwwwwwwqhd monitors, times must be hard

Maybe after the Mujeeb debacle they figured there was a market for $200 monitors? Who knows

  • Damn, I am so used to OLED right now. I don't know if I'll be able to use it as a secondary monitor on the side :/

  • I got it $184 with special code from my ebay app thanks op

  • +2

    and……. its OOS

    • +5

Save $189, can’t force myself to love 1080p

      • exactly, I had 3 in cart for a triple setup. Currently using the LG C2 42", and I just can't get myself to go back to 1080p IPS no matter how good the price.

Stared my cart till it went OOS lol

        • you using a OLED tv for a monitor?

is there any concern of burn in or any cons?

          • @pinkybrain: Yep, that's correct.

There's always a risk of burn in/ image retention on OLED, but I have now been using mine for 7 months now, and well over 2000 hrs on it.

I don't use a black screen as my wallpaper nor hide my taskbar or icons. Sometimes I'll leave the PC/TV on as is while I do other work around the house and so far no burn ins.

One biggest con I'd say for me atleast, is having to rely on the remote to turn it on/ off while using with PC. It doesn't turn on/ off automatically with the PC.

Cons: Some people would say text clarity, but I don't really see a big diff unless I have a smaller "normal" monitor right next to it, then it becomes somewhat apparent. At first the auto dimming was an issue but then I just got a service remote and turned of this feature. Size might also be an issue since the smallest OLED TV comes at 42" but since I have a deep enough desk no issue here, I have also set it up on an arm so it's much easier to adjust the height/ distance per my liking compared to the stock TV feets.

But def OLED monitors are the way to go in the future, and by the looks of CES 2023 we're getting a lot in the upcoming years!!!

            • @thesmartone1125: How much did you paid for the TV?
Do you mind posting some pic/s of your desk setup?

what about in terms of brightness compared to LED monitors/TVs?

From what I read/seen in videos
OLED are good for dark room or night time use , rather than bright room or daytime usage etc like LED etc..

In terms on way of the future
some reviewers say miniLED are looking almost as good OLED while being brighter and no burn in issues..

MiniLED are in the ipad tablet and TVs
and possibly will be in monitors later on or already in it..

further in the future, microLED will probably be the tech to look for
though right now it is still not there yet and is expensive.

              • @pinkybrain: Back then, when it first went on sale for I belive $1800 (which at the time I thought was a very good price, since they were usually $2300). In the past month or so, they've been as low as $1280, was so tempted to buy another one, but a single 42" is fine for me atm, and I am more interested in getting a 27" monitor.

I usually run my brightness around 65, for my needs I think it gets plenty bright.

I have a single window in my room which is covered 90% of the time so my room I would say is fairly dark.

Yep there are a few miniLED monitors right now for purchase from I believe cooler master and viewsonic and they do seem to go a lot more brighter than OLED, and yeah might be suitable for brighter rooms too.

Yep whatever direction the monitor industry takes, it does seem like we have a "bright" future ahead ;)

Setup from a month ago: https://imgur.com/a/gB0zJdI (pre messy rn to take a fresh pic)

  • I just missed out, nooooo

  • OOS

  • +6

was gonna check out but kept telling myself I don't need it I don't need it. Saved 189 now I guess

  • -2

how do we go about returning the ones we bought for 263?

  • +1

Save on some electricity bills too!

  • Great deal but need to build the PC first.

  • Great deal, missus got AOC 24G2U for $209 last week, and missed this :/

  • +1

RIP to those who bought it couple of days ago from Amazon at $339.

  • +1

    omg so devistated rn

I wanted to get this monitor, didn't notice the last dell ebay deal until it was too late, and I was at work this time!

also my ebay watchlist has never sent me notifications which adds insult to injury…

  • How come so cheap?

    • +1

clearly to make me personally sad about missing it :( /s

    • Clearance model. It's almost 3 years old.

  • +2

I got one of these but don't use it any more. The screen really doesn't play well with Macs and the colour is pretty bad for an IPS.

It really only shines in compeditive shooters.

  • Why is this monitor so big/thick?!
Can we use it for office work purposes?!

    • +2

It was too big to be called a monitor. Massive, thick, heavy, and far too rough.

      • +2

        Username checks out lol

  • Is there any chance of getting a price match from somewhere?

  • Mine arrived today. Box is huge
