Just saw this on Amazon, cheaper than the previous sale ($489 in December).

I've already got one of these; they're super quiet and come with lots replacement first-layer filters, which is nice. Only drawback is that they're a bit bigger than other filters, so you need to find space for them.

  • I have a Winix Zero 4-Stage. If I don't have one already, I would get it. They are also good for removing cooking smell, smoke.
One thing I really like is washable pre-filter that is very satisfying to vacuum it.

However, for consumer grade air filter, do not expect Smart-Sensor to be accurate, they are just gimmicky.

  • My partner bought one and i feel that its just clever marketing and not worth it.

Kmart and ikea ones do the same job but at 1/3 the price.

The differences between this and generic air purifiers are the extra ultra thin layer of pet hair filter and their supposedly proprietary "plasmawave" technology which you really have to have faith that its actually working lol. Not worth the extra $$$.

Like the first comment, all air sensors on air purifiers are gimmicks that do not work properly.

    • Re the K-Mart/ Ikea ones, looking at the larger units, do you know what the filter situation is? The web sites say "we have filters until we run out" - not really encouraging.

      • +1

Yeah thats the problem with these cheapo purifiers. Spare parts can sometimes be hard to come by.

I also have a well known philips one and i sometimes get my filters from aliexpress.

    • I have the samsung units. The air and gas sensors are fantastic and absolutely work properly.

Theres league's of scientific testing out there, including by choice, that shows the attitude if "cheap is just as good" is pute unabridged copium. They arent.

  • +5

Disagree. Blow a vape at it and it’ll turn red blow air at it and no change. The quality of the air in the room using this is noticeable. I own this model and a smaller winix and would recommend this model as it’s more powerful.

Try doing the same with a cheaper xiaomi or kmart one with similar CADR. The ones which have the carbon pellets. I bet you 100% You'll see the same results.

      • +1

From my, admittedly brief, research, it's the sensors that separate the cheaper ones from the expensive ones. If you're wanting to run it manually, then a filter is a filter. CADR is all that matter there. If you're wanting to leave it to do it's own thing on auto, then better sensors would better be able to pick up contaminates and ramp up when required.

The Xiaomi ones only have a PM2.5 sensor, compared to say the Samsung AX, which has PM2.5, PM10, and an odour(VOC?) sensor. If you want the same sensors on a Xiaomi ecosystem product you end up at the same price point.

        • Sensors are not important, the manufacturers just add it into the product for a marketing edge. There is no such thing as a "better" sensor. Watch the video below:

            • @[Deactivated]: Lol ok, have fun overpaying for marketing bullshit. I'll enjoy my savings, thank you very much.

@mrvaluepack: "LOL OK" isn't a clapback to the scientific testing that has been performed, that I've mentioned, that you haven't seen. Even if you want it to be. Sit down, please. This isn't a debate, it's a proven result.

I have the Winix Zero+ (Got it for $430), and it made such a massive difference in my room, I went and bought a Philips 1000i.

I bought some cans of air duster from the OzBargain deal posted before buying the Philips. Sprayed it at 90 degrees from the Winix, and within seconds, it had turned to red. Tried the same thing with the Philips, and it didn't register a change.

Having said that, the Philips did turn red today when I was BBQ some sausages in the kitchen.

              • @photonbuddy: Only the highest end Philips has a gas sensor.

                  That might explain it.

Perhaps you do get what you pay for …

          • +3

@mrvaluepack: That video doesn't exactly negate what I said.

He starts off by saying because standalone sensors cost a couple hundred, the include ones can't possible be good, but then doesn't actually test that? Then when it comes speaking about the functionality of the sensors and auto mode, keeps saying that the sensors may not be able to detect small changes in contamination, and that you should just run in manually as high as you can live with.

Sounds to me like it's all conjecture.

Any opinions on how this compares to the Philips 3000i? Both performance and runnings costs via filters?

    • +2

the philips has a better CADR at 520 vs 402 maximum for the winix
      everything else is gimmick

      • Both will be noisy af at max fan to get the CADR

        • yes those are the specs for top speed, realistically up to medium is how much you can keep it with a comfortable noise level. but you can use it as a guide as to the cadr at lower settings. if you are worried about noise you are actually better off with a few cheaper purifiers and run it at lower settings vs one higher spec machine, space permitting

  • Anywhere to buy replacement filters for this other than Costco? :/

I had to buy some replacement filters for my SCA ones, so I settled for the Kogan smart filter which is also 5 stage.

    Buy this one: https://www.amazon.com.au/COWAY-AIRMEGA-400-Air-Purifier/dp/…

Coway is the only consumer grade air purifier I would buy. Works great!
Removes cookign smell, dust, thin floating hair, and any kind of stench including perfume, deodarant and people's BO. lol

Has the activated carbon filter, general dust filter that you would find on any air purifier, and most importantly a HEPA filter.

The plasmawave technology in this air purifier is an ozone generator. I understand that ozone is unsafe at any level, and is generally ineffective for purifying air.

    • it's really pseudoscience i'd stay away from any brand that incorporates these things into their products as it tells you they follow the latest marketing gimmick that sells that isn't backed by science

  • How does it compare to Dyson air purifier?

  • Anyone here uses https://www.blueair.com/au ?
I’m not sure whether I should pull the trigger for this.
    Friend’s office are using them.

  • Isn't it $480 at costco and I heard this doesn't come under electronics so it has lifetime return policy at costco as long as you dont let your membership lapse

  • I have 4 of these in our house.
I can't really notice the difference.
    The filters are very expensive.
The plasmawave might be a gimmick.
The plasmawave make a squeaks after 2 years on 2 units. Luckily fixed under warranty but I won't be so lucky now that they're out of warranty

    • I know what you are talking about. The high pitch noise when plasmawave is turned on. Was told that it was due to power difference from 110 to ours being 210. It is supposedly a known issue. Have you tried contacting the company? They repaired mine eventhough it was over 2 years.
