APPLARO Outdoor Chair With Arm Rests $50 (Was $100) + Delivery @ IKEA

670

This garden chair is made for comfort with a curved back and armrests to lean your arms on. Add a chair cushion and you're ready to enjoy long meals and conversations around your garden dining table.

I had 2 of these and bought another 6 and put them together on the weekend.
Pretty solid and well made for the price.
They take lot of punishment and can take a fair bit of weight.

$50 each chair and $69 delivery fee in total.
Pretty happy with that.

  • Is this the end of the Applaro line? It all seems to be going out of stock or on clearance but I read on a reddit thread that in the US they go out of stock then restock each year at the start of Spring. Is that the same here? I wanna replace my Applaro drop-lead table.

    • +3

That is the case with nearly everything in North America. Want topsoil after October? Wait until spring. Want a life vest for water sports in Summer? You didn’t buy it in spring? Wait til next year. Just moved back from NA and I really struggled with everything being so seasonal.

      • +2

They can have their Peeps and Pumpkin Spice Lattes.

Gimme hot cross buns on boxing day straya!

  • Most of the applaro range is being discounted and seemingly discontinued.

    • +5

We had these, but ended up exchanging them for the ones in the OP.

The issue with the reclining chairs is that you pull the arm rests to adjust the seat, but that means sudden movements involving the arm rest, or if someone accidentally pulls them to move it forward can see the chair suddenly recline.

      • +1

Yea I’ve sat on one and this design flaw is awful.

        • +2

I have them and you a 100% correct. touch the armrest and it's sometimes lights out.

      • Thanks for sharing.

      • Yeah we have these, definitely need to know not to move the arms.. when we have people around we always give the heads up. Not spectacular. Having said that, it's now second nature to move chairs from under the arms, rather on top, so for us it doesn't matter.

But what is great is that they can be folded away.

    • Thanks . I bought these earlier in the month for $70 each - have now organised a return and purchased at this price.

  • +3

I wanted some of these late last year and thought they had been discontinued when they were not available online.
I looked last week and saw them again but online only (for me anyway).
I put them together over the weekend (they came 2 days after ordering) and thought I would post it here for anyone that wanted good, cheap and strong outdoor chairs.
Took about 5 minutes with a driver and a drill to put each one together.

    • Do the chairs stack well ??

    $999 delivery for me….

      $9 for me in WA

  • Are these foldable?

    • +14

      With a hydraulic press, maybe

    • anything is foldable if you are strong enough

      • I was in JBs and watched a guy fold back a laptop thinking it was a convertible 2in1….

        • that's one way to get sales..

    • If you drop a Nokia 3310 on it, maybe

    • Are you organising a TLC match?

    • Not foldable but you can stack them

use code QREW$6hxX+ to get $10 off, need Ikea membership

    • What's the terms of this code (eg. expiry date, minimum spend, etc.)?

      • Not sure about expiry date but minimum spend is $50

  • I didn't like any of this stuff except the table and the storage box. All the chairs are bulkier than I prefer, they have big arms and are low lounge style stuff. Even the storage box was overpriced, I got storage benches with built in esky for the same money elsewhere (when it was still RRP) . Even if you don't want to use them as an esky at least you don't need to worry about bugs and spiders getting in amongst your stuff. The strorage bench is a good price at half off though

    • please advises where did you get the storage bench with the esky please as i am interested thank you

      • it was a long time ago, and it was either from dealsdirect or oo.com.au. The ones I got were a bit shorter, but I got two for around 120 bucks, which was much cheaper than 2 of these

        • dealsdirect or oo.com.au have decent quality furniture……I thinks not……..

          • @jzx100: I picked them up 10 years ago and they have been outside the whole time and they have held up. They could use a refinish but they are actually much, much more solid than the ikea stuff on account they have an esky inside them holding the shape. Funnily enough I picked up a table that folds a bit like this one from ikea to go with it, and it was completely rickety after only 5 years.

            • @Jackson: THe price of wood has skyrocketed in the last 2 years.
Comparing a deal 10 years ago to this is completely off.

Unfortunately in todays market this solid wood outdoor furniture for this price is a steal.

              • @thedean: https://www.dealsdirect.com.au/product/vidaXL-vidaXL-Storage…

Not stained but arguably better than paying the rrp for the ikea one, and it's a lot bigger, and has a hinged lid, and somewhat of a back if that's your thing. Ikea furntiure isn't cheap, at clearance it's decent.

I have found the stain on ikea furniture piss poor anyway, I'd probably rather put some solagard on it, would last far longer.

                • @Jackson: Pine is a very poor choice for outdoor furniture. It rots easy, it's softer, and it's less durable. It's generally a cheaper wood.
A more like to like comparison would be to find similar outdoor furniture using Acacia like the Ikea furniture is. At least with harder more durable wood you can sand and re-stain it after a few years, the pine would likely go in the bin.

Plus outdoor stain is very expensive and time consuming to apply. For a decent application you need a coat of primer (Meth Spirits & Stain), and 3 coats of stain. For something this size that's at least $25 plus time.

I just re-stained my Ikea outdoor furniture from 7 years ago, came out beautifully because it's actually decent hardwood.

                  • @thedean: True about the pine vs acacia, but this cheap Ikea stuff is still pretty cheap. I've laquered pine tables and chairs, and they've held up outdoor for years, but I'm using a good laquer. I don't mind the colour of pine either so I don't always stain it, I often just seal it as you mentioned. The table I had from Ikea was a slightly cheaper one than the appalaro and it didn't last not because the wood was cheap, but the entire construction was along with the original finish

Still my point is that at RRP this isn't a great deal, at the sale price it's decent, but you can find things our there if you are willing to keep an eye out and it's not urgent. Bunnings often has stuff on clearance for quite decent prices (although their rrps are high also)

                    • -1

@Jackson: The RRP is a poor deal because the prices have gone up 50%ish in the last year.
A lot of the Ikea prices have sky rocketed. Probably because of wood price, or maybe because of Aussie dollar.

My whole Ikea outdoor set is from this range (the big couch, table, chairs, etc). I think I paid $450 all up for the whole set including the cushions.
The same set when I priced it in November was over $800 to replace, thus my decision to refinish it instead.
I think the chairs are good quality, they refinished beautifully. The table has been redesigned since I got it, I think if I had maintained it it would be in better shape. I definitely let it wear out, the Melbourne weather didn't help.

I think the wood and design is fine, I think you're bang on about the stain it comes with. If I had refinished it was marine grade stain when I purchased it I suspect it would be as good as new now still. Instead I let the weather get to it a bit.

I still wouldn't buy pine. It just rots even when maintained. My grandpa almost fell through his deck which was all pine because it's just falled apart, while my old mans deck is hardwood and the same age. We re-oiled it and it could be brand new still.

                      • @thedean: Yeah I tend to only buy small items in pine, I picked up a small table and two chairs for the front, and I have a couple of boxes/crates. I'm not totally sold on it, but I picked them up cheap or free. Also for indoor furntiure it's fine, so I have some indoor pieces. The example I gave is just what I found in 2 min, you could do much better with patience and one eye out

Anything with too many joints, with too many moving parts,it's always going to need maintenance or get rickety. I do really like the appalaro dining chairs (not the ones with the arms), the wood is the great heft for a dining chair and they fold.

                        • +1

@Jackson: The dining chairs and the small stool are the ones that came out best of the refinish.
I used a teak color stain, looks amazing. They are well made.

                • -6

@Jackson: That looks sh** house…… I'd hate to see your outdoor furniture.

    • +1

I was also looking at the storage bench and ended up not buying it because the top is completely loose, it doesn't have a hinge so its kinda awkward to open and close.

      • yeah the ones I got were hinged and very solid, as when down the esky lid fits inside the esky bottom

  • +2

Not sure if I tried this one, but I have tried all outdoor settings on display, none of them are comfortable. Suggest to try it out in store before ordering.

    • looks like it needs a cushion on each one at least or 1 on the butt and 1 on the back hah

      • Yeah definitely need the full. Butt/back

  • You should definitely get the Tostero covers for this range. 1+ years in the sun will heavily discolour and fade the stain.

Anyone got a better varnish/stain suggestion that might be harder wearing than the IKEA provided Varda stain?

    • +1

Pretty much any varnish or wax would extend the life of the manufacturer coating. I’ve got a second hand Sjalland outdoor table and chairs from about 6 years ago that I coated the day I got it with marine grade varnish, I coat it once a year and it still looks brand new now

    • I literally just stained mine on the weekend and used this https://www.bunnings.com.au/intergrain-250ml-merbau-ultradec…

The Merbau colour was pretty much spot on for the original Ikea one and they turned out really well once I did it. Its amazing how much the ones in the sunlight stained compared to the others, so definitely worth doing.

    • +1

      https://www.bunnings.com.au/bondall-1l-satin-monocel-gold-ma…
I’ve used this on outdoor furniture for years that lives in direct sun and rain and it holds up pretty well.

    • So is the Ikea varnish bad - not durable or not as protective? It's defs cheaper than anything similar at Bunnings.

      • -1

If it's the same stuff they put on the furniture at the factory, I'm not keen to reapply it.

        • I'm not keen to reapply it.

So it's not good? Ie. the stuff from Bunnings is better? (Is there a way to tell by some specs or just need to try? Has anyone tried?)

          • -2

@pizzaguy: If you were selling chairs and stain, would you invest in good stain on the chairs originally?

If you were selling only stain, would you make it good so people said your stain was good?

  • Just noting this is delivery only, stores don't have them.

    • There was heaps in store at Rhodes yesterday at this price

      • Must be their incosistent establishment across Australia. The website says:

Store - Not available in stores

And shows no stock in each store.

  • +1

Thanks OP, timely post - needed a couple outdoor chairs for a recently fixed up outdoor area! $29 delivery to Adelaide metro for 2 chairs, FYI.

    • @wazman67 How did you get delivery to Adelaide? It's refusing it for me!

      • Oh damn, maybe out of stock? I haven’t received anything yet, so might not work out in my favour still

  • +2

Delivery prices seem to be strange. Melb metro $9 delivery for up to 3 chairs but $49 for 4 chairs!

    • Same here for Sydney metro. Might be something to do with the weight?

  • Does anyone know whether IKEA's regular (and generous) 365 return policy applies for 'last chance' / 'limited time offer' purchases like this one? We have assembled and returned 'as new' items before under this policy without hassle, but never any items on sale. (Their return policy online doesn't specifically mention sale: https://www.ikea.com/au/en/customer-service/returns-claims/r…)

    • +1

Update: decided to risk it since the 365 day return policy is mentioned at checkout.
We ordered 4 chairs over 2 orders to pay 2 x $9 ($18) shipping rather than $49 if bought altogether in one order

  • Good chairs but would prefer to buy with a table.

  • Would this Applaro range be ok uncovered, exposed to rain etc, wanted the reclining chairs for a pool area would it be ok with exposure to pool water

    • I can't know it for sure, as I've never had them, but from what I've seen in the comments and at Ikea in general, they won't stay alright left in the sun and rain for many seasons.

      • Yea thx mate seems like it. But I guess that's were the bunnings protective varnish products come in?

Couple of licks of that when it starts fading?

        • +1

That's going to help, but not as much as covering it, I believe.

Also it seems it would be good to apply new varnish sooner than later - if it starts fading, you may (or just you have to) sand it to remove the existing layers.

  • Deliver charges are a little strange. $9 for 4 of reclining chairs to be delivered but $49 for 4 of the non-reclining chairs. Packaging volume is close to double but weight is about the same, yet 5 times the delivery cost.

    • +2

Maybe you can place two orders. $9 for up to 3 chairs. In that way still cheaper than buying 4 chairs in one order

      • You dear sir/madam are a genius - but too late I already placed an order. Indeed, 2 orders of 3 + 1 would be $18 delivery. Doh!

  • Thanks OP bought 6 for the balcony!! These wood ones were just what we needed!

    • Which table are you matching these to?

      • Glass table we already have. I’m hoping for the matching table to come back in stock but I doubt it.
