    wow…1TB USB flash drives.

I am even more paranoid now of losing the stick or damaging the connector.

Got the 256gb version. Gets hot af. Burned my hand on it after copying 100gb to it and then trying to remove it from the computer.

At least the shell is absorbing heat from the chip to try to cool it

Should come with an oven mitt for safe handling.

    • I find sandisk USBs all like this. Its like they're overclocking them to keep up with Samsung's performance

    • All that heat has to go somewhere!

m.2 & 2.5" SSDs probably get just as warm during data copies, but you wouldn't know as you aren't handling them.

      • No doubt. I’ve never burnt myself on a thumb drive before though lel

I'd trust an external SSD over a flash drive. I'd only buy this if saving physical space is a requirement.

  • how's this to be a somewhat back-up solution for work related files?

reason being I do a bit of air travel and what a solution that:
    *a) doesn't weigh like a brick
    *b) is small / compact
*c) holds at least 600GB + of files

reason I need portable drive is that my line of work doesn't mean I have easy access to wi-fi etc so a cloud solution (onedrive, icloud etc) is not the best

Depends on your workplace but most workplaces now don't allow USB external storage as malware and hacking is a risk that they lock out through windows account control.

Depending on your workplace policy your manager might even get an alert to advise you've attempted it.

    • Depends on the type of files you want to backup. A user review shows the write speed is at best 63.5MB/s so that's below a quality portable HDD. However, if you are copying mostly small files, you won't get that speed anyway.

If portable SSD is too big, then this could be considered. However, nowadays, for on the go, most people prefer portable SSD.

  • If anyone has one of these (any capacity size) and has a current model Volkswagen, I'd be interested to know if you're using this in one of the USB-C ports to play music and how it performs. Does it work well, does it run hot like djsweet mentions above, does it stop working midway through etc. I'm looking at buying this exact thumb drive but probably in the 128GB or 256GB size for when my new VW eventually gets delivered, but the heat issue is concerning especially if I am driving for a long period of time and playing music off the thumb drive.

I don't have a VW or this particular flash drive but I cannot imagine it would get very hot while playing music from it (give the data rate is so low).

      • Thanks. If it gets hot only when copying stuff to it, then I can live with that as I won't be copying to it regularly. I'll just fill it up when I first get it, then put it in the car and go.

  • Out of curiosity, what do people usually use these USB drives for? The only thing I use it for is transferring files between devices and installing windows, but usually these flash drives don't present much benefit over other hard drives

    • In my case, I use it for music production, so I can easily switch files between computers + laptops. Like if I want to sit on the couch and make music, instead of at my desk.

I've tried various cloud storage solutions, and it's simply been unreliable, or straight up not worked (iCloud, Google Drive). I suspect because the files are changing so much so frequently, that it just doesn't sync well.

I suspect that dropbox sync actually works, but also costs a lot, and for cheaper I could just use USB storage. The fact it's a USB drive makes it a lot more convenient to lug around, than a hard drive.

    • Storing multiple bootable ISOs of various OSes or recovery environments/tools in the IT industry. That way you can either reimage a device with one of several OSes/distros or boot into a recovery distro like System Rescue/Rescatux/Gandalf's PE when you're troubleshooting a non-functional device. If the troubleshooting fails then you can just reimage straight from the same media. It's very handy for environments with a diverse range of OSes.

  • Good to warm your hands in winter.

  • Bought the 256gb previously, its great having USB-C and A on the one dongle, its good if you still like to manually back up all your storage on your phone (via USB-C) then download it onto your computer via USB-A.

Pretty cool 1TB fits in this form factor, often just having it in your bag.
