Wow I bought the 28cm version of this in 2011 from Amazon UK for 76 GBP shipped or about $132 AUD!

PS. They are awesome ours is used a lot and still looks brand new.

    • Exactly the same here - bought in the UK ages ago for way less. Le Creuset pricing is out of control these days. Buy Chasseur - much better value for quality to price.

I recently bought a Staub and have been really happy with it… Cheaper than Le Creuset but more expensive than Chasseur I think.

I believe Staub has 3 layers of enamel, the same as Le Creuset. Chasseur is only 2, which should be enough for life if you look after it.

        • Staub the chef's choice, Le Creuset is home cooks choice.

    • Just saying this price of$339 is not a bargain.

Better off getting the 28cm Staub for $350

    • I'm not well versed in the subtitles of French cookware other than knowing my grandparents Le Cruesets are still kicking around. What are the pros/cons of the Staub vs Le Crueset? Other than price of course.

      • Same same. Both made in France, both of high quality. Le Creuset has slightly more brand prestige but that's about it. Apparently some people prefer the white enamel on the inner of the Le Creusets because it's easier to see fond developing but I don't think that's worth the premium over Staub. I've got the 28cm Staub and love the size, I have the cheap Aldi dutch oven if I want to use something smaller.

        • I lean towards staub for their looks and handle engeneering.

      • You can pour water on the lid of the Staub. It traps the steam inside and the food never gets dry. Also, as long as there is water on the lid, the bottom of the casserole doesn't burn.

    • $340 for graphite :)

      • Yeah personally I would spend the extra $10 for the matte black, it looks nice and stays looking clean. The black will drop down to ~$300 once every 6 months or so you can just set up a pricewatch and wait. If you're lucky like me CR will be running a cashback on Amazon kitchen category at the time and you can get it for ~$280.

    • I have the same one but in graphite colour. Bought for $269.40 from Amazon AU in August last year. I was lucky as they were price matching Catch (only the graphite colour) and I got the last one available. Highly recommend.

the much cheaper Aldi version (special buy) is excellent and without the big price tag :)

I have heard the enamel on these don't last that long. Is that true or just brand snobbery?

      • +1

I've made sourdoughs in mine @250°c and it's burnt the inside to a spotched brown in parts.
It's not 'cracked' or ruined or anything mind you, but yeah can't complain at the ~$29 or whatever it was that I paid.

No idea what temp rating the good ones are rated for.

      • Mine is several years old and whilst there is wear and tear, it is still fine :) I think there is indeed brand snobbery out there….. cheers

Kogan sells one Very similar for a fraction of this price.

  • It's really hard to justify this sort of thing for any reason other than snobbery.

Cast iron is cheap and all the same. The possible distinguishing feature of Staub / Creuset, aside form the name is the quality of the enamel.
Some people claim the cheaper brands are more prone to cosmetic issues such as discolouration or chipping at the edges of the lid.

I have both Le Creuset (a gift), and a no-name item. Both look pretty, and do the job. But TBH, most of the time I prefer steel cookware, so not an expert.

$30 kmart it's just a cast iron pot, not an iPhone

    https://www.kmart.com.au/product/4l-cast-iron-casserole-4309…

    Ive got a 50+yo Le Creuset & a 12yo kmart one.

    No real difference.

the staub vs creuset number of layers is a blog post that seems to propagate, if you check the web site , both brands are 3 layer enamel for the cocottes. as to snobbery, creuset have a longer history 1925 and created the market … most popular colour is volcano …1970s orange when other enabled cookware was bland …….staub 1974 , arrived later on the market but has had opportunity to innovate hence dimples in lid for “rain droplets” vs creuset rings. also the aldi ones also have the droplets in the lid. Creuset used to do 50% off sales at myer 30 years ago when i bought most of mine, now it’s 20% and retailers are discouraged from sales of more than 20% off in australia. creuset make better grill pans as the lines are wider so more maillard , staub and chasseur lines are narrower. wanted some cocottes and recently camel’d staub …. have 3 different sizes now from amazon UK ….. creuset do a signature and classic range …..signature has larger handles and handles nicer than staub ….if you get creuset classic handles are same size as staub ….. in cocotte I went staub on price …. for grill pans go creuset ….i own creuset and staub grill pans and creuset are better ……on cocottes the knobs are different creuset are stainless steel, staub is plated steel …… own an aldi cocotte and grill pan …… very good if on budget ……people, worried about enamel chipping…..i think creuset owners generally more careful as they pay a lot vs an aldi user ….. i have creuset cocotte with crackled enamel because when myer did 50% off it wasn’t expensive so didn’t look after it …..staub is matt enamel inside ….. very different to creuset , not just black vs white enamel, the staub matt enamel is like on grill pans ……. whatever you buy use it and enjoy it and don’t worry about heirlooms ….. fashion for colours change …. inherited volcano from mum, bought cherry red for myself, and my staub is grenadine as easier to keep clean.
