I'd pay the extra $70 for the SE 2020.

    • +7

Comparing the benchmarks on Geekbench, you'd be mad not to. Plus iOS 16 reportedly will not be supported on iPhone 8.

      • +12

I don't like using them but i have to say the software support is unrivaled against android counterparts, putting shame even on google pixels support.

iPhone 5s from 2013 just got a security update 6 months ago. Pretty impressive, supporting a phone from 10 years ago.

        • +1

I think the oldest iPhone that still gets along well is the iPhone 6s. My parents have a 6 and 6s. The 6 is a paperweight now, but the 6s is still on the latest iOS I believe.

          • @Kontiki: True that most app are phasing out support on iOS 12 which is the last for the 6, whilst the 6s still got a long life ahead.

Whatapps still works on iOS 12 but no more Facebook as it seems.

          • @Kontiki: 6S does not have the latest, it is stuck on IOS 15, but still gets security updates and works well.

If you are buying now, SE2020 is likely to be good for a lot longer.

        • Samsung have stepped up their game with software , although not on all models !

      • +3

I have an iPhone 8 (MQ6K2X/A) and it has iOS 16.2 - so 8 is still supported… (not sure for how long)
Edit: Just checked.. 16.3 is offered as an update..

        • +1

Probably still gonna be supported next year.

        • +1

Yeah, don't know why I said iOS 16 - I meant iOS 17. iPhone 7 and 7 Plus were dropped for iOS 16.

        • -1

Me, my wife, and my son have iPhone 6 Plus, 6, and 5-S respectively, and all three of these are making us angry - and are ready to become paperweights because the IOS version on all 3 will not update to better than version 12.5.6, with the consequence of that being that many of our Apps will no longer work on our phones. This is outrageous. It is not that the phones CANNOT upgrade to a newer IOS version, it is only that Apple won't LET them do so, because they are FORCING us to pay megabucks to buy newer phones.

How long will it be before the iPhone 8 suffers the same fate?

          • @ssmith3104: Couldn't agree more!!

Let me know how far you get with this. I have four 486 desktops in my garage that are on windows 3.11 and they WON'T LET ME UPGRADE to the latest windows 11 Pro. They are FORCING me to buy the latest laptops.

Some bullsh!t error msg about hard disk space and minimum requirements

I also want to use WordPerfect but they are forcing me to use Ms Office!

            Make America great again!

            (insert anti Dan Andrew slogan)

Do these get their glass and frame replaced or are they scratched up?

    • +16

More important question is do these get a new battery I think.

      • At least the new battery cost straight from apple isn’t insane, but I bet they haven’t replaced them

        • How much is a new battery worth for these¿

            • @smartinet: Wow. Cheers for that.
I don’t have apple care, so I was basically expecting to be hit up big.
              But $79 is reasonable.
Especially as my battery is at best 72%.

Do you know if they take long¿
Do they provide a back up for the phone data in case they balls up the replacement ¿

              • @FredAstair: Very impressed.
Dealt with then online in chat.
They checked my phone through its diagnostics and then directed me to where to book in for a service.

                Noice.

              • @FredAstair: you have to do your own backup.
i've replaced batteries in a few of my iphones. if you're careful and use the right tools, it's hard to stuff up and doesn't take long since there's no soldering involved.

                • @tdw: Cheers.
Yeah, working in that factor now.
As I own crypto and use the phone for this it was a bit of a stress the ensure that I did indeed have the seed phrases for the coins that are on an exchange.
And then there’s the multiple photos..

Almost considered temporarily buying iCloud storage to accommodate this. Even though I have the overpriced costs there.

Gave me a chance to spring clean the phone of dead apps and other things I guess.

                  • +1

@FredAstair: i don't know if you use windows or mac, but i still have an old version of itunes on my win7 laptop i use to occasionally do backups to local disk instead of icloud. doesn't hurt to do both as redundancy…

      • +2

I purchased two of these about a year ago. One had a new battery, the other was 71% battery health. Boost accepted a return based in the battery health, but was then unable to provide a replacement device as they claimed they had no inventory left.

    • +11

I purchased a Boost refurb XR from Coles. Battery capacity just over 80%, screen failed within 30 days. Did a return via Boost and got one with similar battery health. Both phones had visibly scratched frames but fine if you're using a case. If you're fussy about condition and desire a specific colour, purchase from Phonebot (accurate condition grading) or over-the-counter at Cashies (inspect before purchase). Otherwise I rate Coles/Boost as OK value when on sale.

      • Oft. This is why I didn’t bother getting my XR fixed with glass smashed both sides at some rando repairer, hole in pocket and failed non-oem fix

  • -5

Still better than 71% of phones out there
    https://www.giznext.com/mobiles/apple-iphone-8-64gb-gnt/benc…

    • +1

That’s a pretty wild statement. Considering all the different configurations, operating systems, features and so on, I don’t think anyone can make an exact position on where a phone sits.

    • +1

Lol. There's a lot more to a phone than benchmark scores.

Software support, OS, camera, build quality, etc.

  • -4

Apple holds the value too high compare to the real world

    • +3

Are you living in an alternate universe?

      • +5

I feel like I'm going to get sucked into troll/ragebait but I'll bite. Apple products hold their value longer than Androids because there isn't an alternative. If you want iOS, you can only get it from Apple. If you've got a $2000 iPhone and a $2000 Android phone and were to sell them both after 2 years you'd get a higher price on the iPhone. Android just has many more direct competitors (and as such they need to actually add value to distinguish themselves).

This is just basic economics. I hate Apple personally but I must commend their efforts from a business perspective.

Idk what "compared to the real world" was about but I'm assuming OP is saying Coles wouldn't still try and sell an S8 for $199. In fact we stopped seeing deals of that 3 years ago

        • +2

I kind of see your point. But isn’t it because Apple distinguishes itself in the smartphone market that iPhone retain they’re value more?
They must be doing some things right to be the preference over Android.

          • +1

@FireRunner: This is mostly what I mean by their "efforts from a business perspective". They've made it so the more Apple products you have, the more everything connects and increased productivity/easier access. This "walled garden" approach keeps customers in and competitors out.

Android on the other hand is open source so it's fair game whoever wants to use it. This leads to statistically more innovative ways but connectivity struggles due to other factors Apple doesn't have to worry about.

Reasons why Apple is popular: itjustworks.jpg
Reasons why Android is popular: more competition leads to lower prices, more features and more "DIY support"

            • +1

              @pennypincher98:

Android on the other hand is open source so it's fair game whoever wants to use it.

Yes but also no. The majority of consumers expect Google Play services which come with conditions from Google. It's rare to see a manufacturer ship a phone without play services - the main example would be the Huawei P30 Pro.

Android market share is mostly Samsung anyway.

              • @ihfree:

The majority of consumers expect Google Play services which come with conditions from Google

Well yes there are uniform rules, but Android flavours can look very different from each other and have features on some not on others (nothing better than getting companies to innovate your software for you).

Android market share is mostly Samsung anyway.

It's about 1 in 3 from memory which is significant, but not a majority. Regardless, the Android market share is a lot more than phones.

            • @pennypincher98: Fair, though I think the Apple-approach has some real advantages for the end user. Better privacy (at least from third parties), better software-hardware integration, longer software support to name a few. But the trade-off is a locked down system which lacks configurability, repairability and so on.
I guess the average person values the former qualities more than the latter

              • +1

@FireRunner: With youtube, a bit of bravery and care, iphones are repairable. I’ve replaced broken screens, ports, batteries. I wouldn’t go opening up anything within warranty period, but getting value out of older phones for kids, parents etc. well worth it.

                • @braddsey: True, but sourcing genuine parts is difficult.

                  • +1

@FireRunner: You don’t need genuine parts if it’s a matter of extending the service life of a phone. Just get the after market part you need. You’ve already voided your warranty! 😁

    • +1

Hell, you don't even need to understand the product. You can just look at price/deal history.

Maybe you need to join the real world.

  • +9

Are Coles selling refurbished phones from the lost and found section now? 😅

    • +2

Yes, that’s where the mobile tech section is.

  • +1

I've never been able to complete an online phone purchase with Coles. Phone the call centre, they'll tell you which stores have stock. When you head in to the store expect them to have no idea, declared they don't even sell Boost mobiles, but tell them their system is showing stock-on-hand and someone will be able to locate.

    • Place a click-and-collect order.

      • You can nominate any store for click and collect. When the collection window opens the picker won't find a phone on-hand so will cancel the order. This happened to me for six orders last time when the phones were $279. Coles is setup to fill grocery lines, not tech items.

        • I’m sorry to hear that. I had no trouble placing an order and collecting it in the last deal.

  • Any good 12 month mobile a sims going atm?

  • +3

During those ebay 22%/20% off refurbished offers, iPhone SE 2020 'very good' can be had for about $225.

  • out of interest - when do you think support for iphone 12 pro max will end?

    • -2

Look it up , like everyone else has too !!!

    • Many more years. It’ll be supported for at least 7 years from launch.

    • My rule of thumb - 2 years in battery will need to be replaced… expect 5 years of security updates, anything past that is a bonus.

    • 2030

  • +7

It's not that big a discount when you look at normal refurbished prices of "as-new" condition phones:

    • iPhone 8
      • $199 Coles
      • $217 Reebelo
    • iPhone SE 2nd Gen (2020)
      • $269 Coles
      • $286 Reebelo
    • iPhone XR
      • $329 Coles
      • $337 Reebelo

Of course it still counts as a deal, just don't want people to FOMO buy these thinking they don't come this low often.

  • +1

Had poor experience with Coles/Boost Iphone 8 previously. Would look at SE 2020 minimum and factor in a battery replacement.

    • +1

I got an SE2020 a couple of months ago and the battery health is currently 86%. Pretty happy.

      • my XR was 83% and later found out phone was repaired and the front part is not properly gummed to the housing (can see an opening)

    • +1

The SE 2020 that I got was 48% battery not happy

  • Possibility this device may no longer receive updates past September 2023.

The iPhone 5s is 10 years old this year. iPhone 6 is 9 years old. What are you talking about?

Apple have very good OS support and are still providing security patches for those phones.

Also, it is because these phones can’t upgrade. What you think 9-10 year old processors can utilise all the new iOS features and Apple just choose to not let them?

They have to draw the line somewhere to keep tech moving forward.

Some Android phones stop getting OS updates after 2 years from their release date.

Pick up the 2020 SE. I’d say at least another 4 years of updates for those.

      • I find that sometimes it is the App itself that is acting as the "gatekeeper" and keeping me out because of my "old" IOS version, and not because my phone is not perfectly capable of running that App. Sometimes I can trick the App and gain entry into it by first logging into their website version of their site via Safari on my phone, and only then opening the App, which somehow seems to know that I am already into their site, and it allows me to proceed to do my transaction via the App not via the website. On one site this is important because it allows me access to earning and spending more bonus points via the app than they do via web. I have never understood why they would discriminate in this way. Any clues?

  • +1

Bought the XR just under half a year ago from this deal: https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/722241
Significantly better deal as that was $279, compared to the $329 they're asking now.
Battery health still at 89%, and casing and screen in good nick… don't know whether I was just lucky, but can't fault it.

  • +1

These are terrible. Awful battery life. Went through 3 before I gave up. One wouldn’t even turn on out of the box. Coles tried to ignore ACL and tell me to take it up with the manufacturer. I asserted my rights for an in store replacement or refund due to the major failure.

Ended up getting an XR in the end which was much better.
