Looking for a Laptop for University - Budget $1,600

Hi OzBargainers.

Looking for a good laptop for university and to replace my old desktop set-up - planning to connect it to my monitor. In terms of specs nothing heavy is needed, just enough to go by studying, calling and very light gaming.

Budget is about $1.6k can wiggle a little bit.

What colour laptop are you looking for?

What are you planning to do with it? If you are just doing word processing and internet surfing you don't need to spend $1600.

    Macbook pro

  • I can share my thoughts on Lenovo ThinkPad E14 Gen 2 -> POS. I have had the motherboard replaced twice (under warranty) as would not restart. The 12 month warranty is for in-house service, however you have to explain the issue to 3 people 5 ways before they assign a technician to come out to test hardware. The technician will schedule a visit and depending on demand it will take minimum 24 - 48 hours and fingers crossed they have the replacement part in stock. I previously had a ThinkPad for 6 years and still running smoothly so I suspect quality gone downhill. The tech confirmed had previously seen reboot issue and replaced motherboard on several. I'm keen to see what people suggest you to buy.

  • What are you studying?

    • Radiography

      • What are you required to do with the laptop? If you don't answer this you're not going to get useful suggestions

        • I have a feeling they don’t know as it’s their first semester.

          • @Julius: OP should get something very cheap and wait until they know what they need out of their laptop, rather than splashing money about on something that isn't going to be needed

@Quantumcat: Please relax Quantumcat, I sense very strong keyboard warrior aura from you.

      • Would a touch screen be of any advantage ?

Get any Macbook, among other benefits you'll won't need to pack your power supply or search for an outlet thanks to the all-day battery life

    • I'm not too keen on macOS but appreciate the suugestion. Should've noted it on post.

      • No worries, you should be able to get something half decent with that budget.

https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/753362 - good for gaming and university. Just wouldn't last more than a couple hours on battery so gotta bring your charger along

OP would likely want to bring his laptop to lectures.

  • A Dell or Lenovo, 16GB ram, 14inch screen and long battery life. Check what deals are on.
Don’t get a 15inch screen or something with poor battery, you don’t want to be looking to charge while at uni.
